Our poster project for The Three P's, this small midcentury home south of campus has great bones but lacked vibrancy - a je ne sais quoi that the clients were searching to savoir once and for all. SYI worked with them to nail down a design direction and furniture plan, and they decided to invest in the big-impact items first: built-ins and lighting and a fresh paint job that included a beautiful deep blue-green line around the windows. The vintage rug was an Etsy score at an awesome price, but only after the client spent months scouring options and sources online that matched the vision and dimensions of the plan. A good year later, the West Elm sofa went on sale, so the client took advantage; some time after that, they painted the kitchen, created the drop zone / bench area, and rounded out the room with occasional tables and accessories. Their lesson: in patience, and details, there is beauty.

The homeowners had owned this 2,800sf apartment for many years but had never undertaken renovations as they lived in Washington D.C. The goal was to functionally update and renovate the spacious Classic 8 landmark apartment while preserving its pre-war character.
With south and east exposures at 10 windows facing Central Park and downtown from a high floor, the apartment was light-filled and afforded significant views from the living room, dining room and library as well as two of the bedrooms. The goal was to create an urban oasis in the aerie-like apartment with light and views in a way that seamlessly integrated traditional methods, modern materials, lighting and technology.

The juxtaposition of raw, weathered and finished woods with sleek whites, mixed metals and soft textured elements strike a fabulous balance between industrial, rustic and glamorous – exactly what the designers envisioned for this dream retreat. This unique home’s design combines recycled shipping containers with traditional stick-building methods and resulted in a luxury hybrid home, inside and out. The design team was particularly challenged with overcoming various preconceived notions about containers to truly create something new, luxurious and sustainable.

During excavation for this new modern home, large granite boulders rose to the surface from the primordial hillside. Instead of displacing these monoliths from the site from which they were created, they were arranged to define space. A circle of boulders stand guard around a custom built fire pit, providing protection from the wind while offering a place to climb or sit. The extended landscape view from the lawn is kept intact by the introduction of a ha-ha, a traditional landscape feature, that hides the productive garden and keeps it from breaking the view. Native and drought tolerant plantings hug the outer edges of the property for minimal use of irrigation and to visually blend into the surrounding hillside. This project also features a custom ipe bench with integrated lighting, waterjet address numbers with night lighting, and hardscape that complements the form and materiality of the architecture to create a harmonious transition into the horizontal plane.

When Smith Hanes Studio set out to bring a handwoven coastal warmth to the main dining room of Carmel restaurant in Atlanta's Buckhead Village, they chose a fleet of twenty of our large Fawn Pendants to define the space.
Each Fawn pendant is handwoven from elephant grass by members of SWOPA, the Sirigu Women's Organization for Pottery and Art in northern Ghana. SWOPA's mission is to preserve traditional craft knowledge and pass weaving techniques down to the next generation of women in their community. The elephant grass grows along West African riverbanks, is harvested using traditional methods that allow it to regenerate naturally, and is sun-dried before weaving. Because each shade is woven by hand, every piece undulates slightly differently.
Installed as a sweeping canopy across the dining room ceiling, the twenty pendants create an atmosphere that is at once intimate and expansive, the warm diffused glow of the natural fibre entirely in keeping with the coastal, handcrafted material story that Smith Hanes wove throughout the space. The pendants sit alongside a rattan-wrapped bar and custom fibre installations by local artisan Sonya Yong James.
