This kitchen renovation is a part of a complete renovation project of a 1928 English Tudor home, in the historic district of Springfield, Missouri. The owner of this house worked closely with the local historic board, planning and zoning department, and building regulations department, to obtain a unanimous approval for the project. This space used to consist of a very small galley kitchen and a separate small breakfast nook. The wall separating the two spaces was removed, and a new larger open kitchen was created. The stained glass window was designed by the architect.

Designing and building outdoor living spaces in Austin, TX, we have become experts in meeting local water quality regulations. At issue are the natural aquifers that supply drinking water to city residents. In order to maintain water quality, the city restricts impervious ground cover. Homeowners are limited to a specific percentage of impervious cover on their lots. Any space beyond that percentage must be permeable.

There was a conscious effort to limit square footage, both as a control on cost and on future energy use, without compromising the quality of the first floor public spaces (Living, Dining, Kitchen). The thick, polished concrete slab that helps to regulate heat in this home also serves as a beautiful, cost-effective finish floor for the main level. Locally sourced Hemlock posts and beams provide affordable structural support to the second floor, as well as a touch of natural warmth to interior spaces.

What began as a structural rejuvenation evolved into a comprehensive historic restoration, requiring close coordination with the local historic review board and county regulations to preserve the home's character while modernizing it for today's living. The result honors nearly a century of history while delivering a fully updated custom home.

This collection of four residential remodel and addition projects across the City of Boulder reflects Nicole’s thoughtful, detail-driven approach to transforming existing homes. Each project balances the constraints of working within established neighborhoods and strict local regulations with the opportunity to reimagine spaces for modern living.
From interior reconfigurations to carefully integrated additions, these homes were redesigned to improve flow, bring in natural light, and create a stronger connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. Nicole guided each project through feasibility, design, and the complexities of City of Boulder Planning and Development Services, helping homeowners navigate permitting, zoning, and review processes with clarity and confidence.
The result is a set of highly tailored homes that feel both refreshed and enduring—designed to support the evolving needs of each family while respecting the character of their surrounding context.

To transform the residential property and dramatically increase its ground-floor footprint, this project delivers a comprehensive design featuring a single-storey front extension to enhance curb appeal, a side extension for practical utility, a rear extension creating an expansive open-plan kitchen and living space, and a garage conversion into a fully integrated habitable room. The architectural strategy establishes a seamless flow between indoor and outdoor areas through high-performance rear glazing and strategically placed rooflights, while maintaining visual harmony with the neighboring elevation. Completing the deliverable, accurate 1:100 scale floor plans, roof layouts, sections, and elevation drawings were developed to ensure full compliance with local council planning policies and UK Building Regulations.
