This faux granite natural spring is both a central feature of this garden space as well as an anchoring point for retaining the slope behind it. The silent pump is hidden below the decorative gravel and within the concrete work is a complete rubber liner to prevent any leaks. The soft sound of the moving water attracts birds and people alike.

This project encompasses the renovation of two aging metal warehouses located on an acre just North of the 610 loop. The larger warehouse, previously an auto body shop, measures 6000 square feet and will contain a residence, art studio, and garage. A light well puncturing the middle of the main residence brightens the core of the deep building. The over-sized roof opening washes light down three masonry walls that define the light well and divide the public and private realms of the residence. The interior of the light well is conceived as a serene place of reflection while providing ample natural light into the Master Bedroom. Large windows infill the previous garage door openings and are shaded by a generous steel canopy as well as a new evergreen tree court to the west. This is an example of a mid-sized southwestern full sun backyard stone landscaping in Phoenix.

A large, striking urn was placed as the focal point in the front with the walkway circumventing it in a semi-formal geometric arrangement. Stepstone pavers were set in decomposed granite in a loose and random pattern for the pathway.

The main goals of this project was to make it more usable and enjoyable for the owner, to reduce maintenance and to created a covered area for enjoyment year-round. This design also kept the family's new puppy in mind - fencing it in for safety and planting with careful consideration of plants that are safe for dogs. The winding pathway for humans is reminiscent of a stream bed and there is also a narrow perimeter fence specifically for the pup! Ben Park
