This prefabricated 1,800 square foot Certified Passive House is designed and built by The Artisans Group, located in the rugged central highlands of Shaw Island, in the San Juan Islands. It is the first Certified Passive House in the San Juans, and the fourth in Washington State. The home was built for $330 per square foot, while construction costs for residential projects in the San Juan market often exceed $600 per square foot. Passive House measures did not increase this projects’ cost of construction. The clients are retired teachers, and desired a low-maintenance, cost-effective, energy-efficient house in which they could age in place; a restful shelter from clutter, stress and over-stimulation. The circular floor plan centers on the prefabricated pod. Radiating from the pod, cabinetry and a minimum of walls defines functions, with a series of sliding and concealable doors providing flexible privacy to the peripheral spaces. The interior palette consists of wind fallen light maple floors, locally made FSC certified cabinets, stainless steel hardware and neutral tiles in black, gray and white. The exterior materials are painted concrete fiberboard lap siding, Ipe wood slats and galvanized metal. The home sits in stunning contrast to its natural environment with no formal landscaping. Designed for its challenging site with spectacular, unencumbered south-facing views, Aman 22 nestles comfortably into the slope. A water-feature, fire pit, and courtyard hot tub lure residents outdoors to enjoy the villas’ natural surroundings. The division between outdoors and indoors is blurred by low-profile windows that mark the minimal division along rock walls and floors that seamlessly continue from exterior to interior. Architect: Michelle Penn, AIA This barn home is modeled after an existing Nebraska barn in Lancaster County. Heating is by passive solar design, supplemented by a geothermal radiant floor system which is located under the wood floors in the hall. The railings are made from goat fencing and walls are tongue and groove pine. The paint color is Paper Mache AF-25 Benjamin Moore. Notice the traditional style interior transoms above the doors! The original cabinets were electric blue, the floors were black linoleum and the rooms were broken-up with a passthrough. I wanted an open floor plan for entertaining purposes and just to make the home flow better so I decided to take these down. I wanted a white and super bright kitchen, and I think I accomplished it! The cabinets were custom made by a local gentleman here in Charleston, the backsplash is from Lowe’s along with the door/cabinet hardware and the reed glass door. The appliances are standard GE and the chandelier was purchased from an antique shop. The super-sized single bowl sink made by Kraus, the countertops are Silestone in Snow White and the butcher block was custom made by a fabricator who lives in my neighborhood.
