The existing multi-level deck was large but lived small. The hot tub, angles, and wide steps occupied valuable sitting space. Wood Wise was asked to replace the deck with a covered porch. One challenge for the covered porch is the recessed location off the family room. There are three different pitched roofs to tie into. Also, there are two second floor windows to be considered. The solution is the low-pitched shed roof covered with a rubber membrane. Two Velux skylights are installed in the vaulted ceiling to light up the interior of the home. The white painted Plybead ceiling helps to make it even lighter. The new porch features a corner stone fireplace with a stone hearth and wood mantel. The floor is 5/4” x 4” pressure treated tongue & groove pine. The open grilling deck is conveniently located on the porch level. Fortress metal railing and lighted steps add style and safety. The end result is a beautiful porch that is perfect for intimate family times as well as larger gatherings.

Mid-sized arts and crafts front porch photo with a roof extension

The definitive idea behind this project was to create a modest country house that was traditional in outward appearance yet minimalist from within. The harmonious scale, thick wall massing and the attention to architectural detail are reminiscent of the enduring quality and beauty of European homes built long ago. It features a custom-built Spanish Colonial- inspired house that is characterized by an L-plan, low-pitched mission clay tile roofs, exposed wood rafter tails, broad expanses of thick white-washed stucco walls with recessed-in French patio doors and casement windows; and surrounded by native California oaks, boxwood hedges, French lavender, Mexican bush sage, and rosemary that are often found in Mediterranean landscapes. An emphasis was placed on visually experiencing the weight of the exposed ceiling timbers and the thick wall massing between the light, airy spaces. A simple and elegant material palette, which consists of white plastered walls, timber beams, wide plank white oak floors, and pale travertine used for wash basins and bath tile flooring, was chosen to articulate the fine balance between clean, simple lines and Old World touches.

Conceptual Design 1630 is a contemporary house plan with a low pitch roof line. The stone and shake exterior is complemented by large glass doors and windows. Double columns frame the front porch entry. The foyer features an adjoining powder room and coat closet. The open great room enjoys a coffered ceiling and a fireplace while a rear porch with skylights invites outdoor relaxation. An island enhances the kitchen, and the dining room is spacious to accommodate family meals. The master suite is at the back of the home with a vaulted ceiling and access to the rear porch. Skylights top the thoughtfully designed master bathroom with a dual vanity, a freestanding bathtub, a walk-in shower, and an attached walk-in closet. Two additional bedrooms and an office/bedroom are across the floor plan with two full bathrooms. The three-car garage offers a storage bay and direct access to the side porch. A walk-in pantry and a mudroom are convenient additions, and the utility room enjoys abundant cabinetry and a laundry sink.

Roof overhangs were eliminated, which saved expense and brought a crisp, modern appearance to a traditional form, allowing for very careful exterior sealing of roof-to-wall intersections. In lieu of roof overhangs, low pitched, steel roofed canopies provide cover to areas that require it, creating useful outdoor space and breaking up the simple form of the house. The siding and trim are made from inexpensive but long-lasting Maine-milled White Cedar, installed in a reverse board and batten style which allows drainage and airflow behind the boards to extend their life. The siding was also left unfinished to weather to a silver grey, reducing cost, ecological footprint, and the need for future maintenance that paint or solid stain would incur. Exterior and interior surfaces (unfinished wood, galvanized steel, unfinished concrete) were selected to be durable and low-maintenance, minimizing the long term operating costs and future ecological impact of the house.

The homeowners asked for a comfortable custom home for their retirement that would not only meet their needs, but that would also accommodate houseguests and dinner parties with ease. Stylistically, they wanted the coziness of a “cabin in the woods” yet the elegance of an estate home. That combination suggested the simplicity and integrity of a Prairie Style home, which would combine comfort, utility, and beauty. As a result, this 5000-square-foot, single-story custom home features a broad, low-pitched roof with prominent low chimneys, rhythms of vertical and horizontal planes, and outdoor spaces and elements that extend beyond the house. In the landscape, we nestled the house between three substantial rock formations. These outcroppings provided the anchor points for the porte-cochere, rear terrace, water garden, and retaining wall at the lower-level garage. For the exterior terraces and retaining walls, we juxtaposed curvilinear forms with the house’s rectilinear geometry.
