As a cottage, the Ridgecrest was designed to take full advantage of a property rich in natural beauty. Each of the main houses three bedrooms, and all of the entertaining spaces, have large rear facing windows with thick craftsman style casing. A glance at the front motor court reveals a guesthouse above a three-stall garage. Complete with separate entrance, the guesthouse features its own bathroom, kitchen, laundry, living room and bedroom. The columned entry porch of the main house is centered on the floor plan, but is tucked under the left side of the homes large transverse gable. Centered under this gable is a grand staircase connecting the foyer to the lower level corridor. Directly to the rear of the foyer is the living room. With tall windows and a vaulted ceiling. The living rooms stone fireplace has flanking cabinets that anchor an axis that runs through the living and dinning room, ending at the side patio. A large island anchors the open concept kitchen and dining space. On the opposite side of the main level is a private master suite, complete with spacious dressing room and double vanity master bathroom. Buffering the living room from the master bedroom, with a large built-in feature wall, is a private study. Downstairs, rooms are organized off of a linear corridor with one end being terminated by a shared bathroom for the two lower bedrooms and large entertainment spaces. We converted an underused back yard into a modern outdoor living space. A bright tiled planter anchors an otherwise neutral space. The decking is ipe hardwood, the fence is stained cedar, and cast concrete with gravel adds texture at the fire pit. Photos copyright Laurie Black Photography.

A 50 year old kitchen gets a makeover! This family hung on to their 1960s kitchen as long as they could because they loved the range, particularly the height of the cooktop and oven. The lower cooktop makes it easy to see contents in your pots and the oven height was perfect for the homeowner. We duplicated the function by placing the new cooktop and new oven at the same height as the 1960s range oven. This small kitchen was all about function and space saving from the built-in banquette seating with cantelivered table for maximum leg room to the dishwasher drawer that allows for more storage. This is the lower level of lovely town house in Northern Virginia. The client and her teenage daughter wanted a place to hang out, watch TV, play games, use a laptop and do homework. Our goal was to allocate space for each request while not overwhelming the whole room. We achieved this by keeping the lines and color palette simple, but certainly not boring. The dramatic deep blue accent walls acts as a backdrop to the furnishings and draws the eye to the far reaches of the long room. The high table and 4 leather barstools are perfect for dining, games or working on a laptop. The sectional is a soft and comfy place to land after a long day. David Keith Photography

The home, designed with an extra-wide floorplan, achieved through side yard relief, also has considerable, professionally-landscaped outdoor living spaces. This brick and limestone residence has been designed with family-functional experiences and classically proportioned spaces in mind. Highly-efficient environmental technologies have been integrated into the design and construction and the plan also takes into consideration the incorporation of all types of advanced communications systems. KPN Photo We were called in to remodel this barn house for a new home owner with a keen eye for design. We had the sink made by a concrete contractor We had the base for the sink and the mirror frame made from some reclaimed wood that was in a wood pile. We installed bead board for the wainscoting.
