Photography by Dan Piassick Taken from the nit and grit of city life along with charming and romantic elements comes Urban Glam. All the way down to the color we have shown what can be when you combine two very opposite styles into one. When creating the design we focused on a balance between the two styles with material choices and elements throughout the space. The urban style is shown in a few select pieces, first is the custom shelf that was inspired by the Chinese symbol for the phrase “To Create “. This piece has straight, heavy lines and is done in a dark concrete gray color which gives it a great urban feel. It creates space for a few worthy pieces to be placed upon it but itself is the main art piece. The phrase “To Create” can be both urban and glam. It’s urban in the way that we’ve created the city and everything in it, from the buildings to the cars that drive on the roads. However, you can create something glamorous as well, so the meaning of the shelf supports both styles. The second urban element is the wall of acid etched mirrors. They have a nitty-gritty feel to them like that have been around for a long time. The lighting element in this room is very glam, not only is the chandelier adorned with jewelry, amethyst and clear stones but the glam continues up to the ceiling around the chandelier with beautifully draped fabric. The tufted velvet headboard also screams glam in a romantic, luxurious way. Other important elements in this Urban Glam room are the beautiful glass art pieces, the matching ivory beauty desk and bedside table, and the wool and silk rug that grounds the whole space. The attached bath continues the glamourous style with upholstered walls and hand blown glass pendants in rich purples. The mirror above the sink is made from hand cut glass giving it a rough look but the pattern it is placed in a very elegant way. By combining the nitty-gritty feeling of a city and a charming, romantic air we’ve created the concept Urban Glam. Since this space is in a high-rise condominium located in a downtown area it already has the Urban environment surrounding it and by making it luxurious and romantic it will also be comfortable to live in.

Large covered terraces and arbors were used to extend the interior living spaces out onto the site. All the buildings are clad in Texas limestone with accent bands of Leuders limestone to mimic the local limestone cliffs in the area. Steel was used on the arbors and fences and left to rust. Vertical grain Douglas fir was used on the interior while flagstone and stained concrete floors were used throughout. The flagstone floors extend from the exterior entry arbors into the interior of the Main Living space and out onto the Main house terraces.

This project was simply furnishing the front room of a small Portland apartment. The apartment is north-facing so we chose a soft yellow for the ceiling to bring in a feeling of warmth and sunlight. The walls are a pale grey, and both colors find their way into the layers of Emily’s abstracted land and sea scape mural.

The woodland mulch path provides a transition from space to space and culminates at a recessed bluestone fire-pit surrounded by a 2¼-inch thick irregular bluestone tight-jointed seating area dotted with flower containers. The custom-made copper cover protects the fire pit when not in use.

The client’s coastal New England roots inspired this Shingle style design for a lakefront lot. With a background in interior design, her ideas strongly influenced the process, presenting both challenge and reward in executing her exact vision. Vintage coastal style grounds a thoroughly modern open floor plan, designed to house a busy family with three active children. A primary focus was the kitchen, and more importantly, the butler’s pantry tucked behind it. Flowing logically from the garage entry and mudroom, and with two access points from the main kitchen, it fulfills the utilitarian functions of storage and prep, leaving the main kitchen free to shine as an integral part of the open living area. Priorities for these homeowners included blending outdoor and indoor spaces wherever possible with generously proportioned windows and doors, porches, patios and balconies. A gracious lime-washed brick entry punctuates a simplified white stucco and black-frame-windowed exterior with traditional rooflines. Dramatic open spaces on the main floor comfortably accommodate the everyday activities of this busy family of four, while providing for welcomed visits from family and friends. A functional, open kitchen is designed for serious cooking, a butler’s pantry for staples, and serveware storage and dining spaces that effortlessly host after-school snacking to multi-course meals. A main-level, Peak-view office comfortably supports working at home, complete with a beer cave and tasting nook for hosting fellow aficionados after work is done. Guests will find comfort and privacy in a ma in-level guestroom suite or sleepover fun in the built-in bunks of the expansive over-garage bonus room. The main level foyer leads to a spacious sitting area, whose hearth is shared by the open dining room and kitchen. Multiple doorways give access to a sunroom and outdoor living spaces.
