Photographer: Jay Goodrich This 2800 sf single-family home was completed in 2009. The clients desired an intimate, yet dynamic family residence that reflected the beauty of the site and the lifestyle of the San Juan Islands. The house was built to be both a place to gather for large dinners with friends and family as well as a cozy home for the couple when they are there alone. The project is located on a stunning, but cripplingly-restricted site overlooking Griffin Bay on San Juan Island. The most practical area to build was exactly where three beautiful old growth trees had already chosen to live. A prior architect, in a prior design, had proposed chopping them down and building right in the middle of the site. From our perspective, the trees were an important essence of the site and respectfully had to be preserved. As a result we squeezed the programmatic requirements, kept the clients on a square foot restriction and pressed tight against property setbacks. The delineate concept is a stone wall that sweeps from the parking to the entry, through the house and out the other side, terminating in a hook that nestles the master shower. This is the symbolic and functional shield between the public road and the private living spaces of the home owners. All the primary living spaces and the master suite are on the water side, the remaining rooms are tucked into the hill on the road side of the wall. Off-setting the solid massing of the stone walls is a pavilion which grabs the views and the light to the south, east and west. Built in a position to be hammered by the winter storms the pavilion, while light and airy in appearance and feeling, is constructed of glass, steel, stout wood timbers and doors with a stone roof and a slate floor. The glass pavilion is anchored by two concrete panel chimneys; the windows are steel framed and the exterior skin is of powder coated steel sheathing.

Every so often we get the unique opportunity to collaborate with another designer. This quirky and elegant master bath could not have been more fun to be a part of. Meg Miller's incredibly cool vision for her clients' master bathroom was modern and bold, but refined, comfortable and inviting. The clients had specific needs for storage and the use of space, but didn't want anything to appear function-over-form. No amenities were overlooked: custom walnut cabinetry, heated floors, a digitally controlled shower and steam shower, and an all glass water-closet.

H2D transformed this Mercer Island home into a light filled place to enjoy family, friends and the outdoors. The waterfront home had sweeping views of the lake which were obstructed with the original chopped up floor plan. The goal for the renovation was to open up the main floor to create a great room feel between the sitting room, kitchen, dining and living spaces. A new kitchen was designed for the space with warm toned VG fir shaker style cabinets, reclaimed beamed ceiling, expansive island, and large accordion doors out to the deck. The kitchen and dining room are oriented to take advantage of the waterfront views. Other newly remodeled spaces on the main floor include: entry, mudroom, laundry, pantry, and powder. The remodel of the second floor consisted of combining the existing rooms to create a dedicated master suite with bedroom, large spa-like bathroom, and walk in closet. Inspiration for a contemporary bedroom remodel in New York

The clients shared with us an inspiration picture of a white marble bathroom with clean lines and elegant feel. Their current master bathroom was far from elegant. With a somewhat limited budget, the goal was to create a walk-in shower, additional storage and elegant feel without having to change much of the footprint. To have the look of a marble bath without the high price tag we used on the floor and walls a durable porcelain tile with a realistic Carrara marble look makes this upscale bathroom a breeze to maintain. It also compliments the real Carrara marble countertop perfectly. A vanity with dual sinks was installed. On each side of the vanity is ample cabinet and drawer storage. This bathroom utilized all the storage space possible, while still having an open feel and flow. This master bath now has clean lines, delicate fixtures and the look of high end materials without the high end price-tag. The result is an elegant bathroom that they enjoy spending time and relaxing in.

This modern lake house is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The residence overlooks a mountain lake with expansive mountain views beyond. The design ties the home to its surroundings and enhances the ability to experience both home and nature together. The entry level serves as the primary living space and is situated into three groupings; the Great Room, the Guest Suite and the Master Suite. A glass connector links the Master Suite, providing privacy and the opportunity for terrace and garden areas. Won a 2013 AIANC Design Award. Featured in the Austrian magazine, More Than Design. It’s always a blessing when your clients become friends - and that’s exactly what blossomed out of this two-phase remodel (along with three transformed spaces!). These clients were such a joy to work with and made what, at times, was a challenging job feel seamless. This project consisted of two phases, the first being a reconfiguration and update of their master bathroom, guest bathroom, and hallway closets, and the second a kitchen remodel. In keeping with the style of the home, we decided to run with what we called “traditional with farmhouse charm” – warm wood tones, cement tile, traditional patterns, and you can’t forget the pops of color! The master bathroom airs on the masculine side with a mostly black, white, and wood color palette, while the powder room is very feminine with pastel colors. When the bathroom projects were wrapped, it didn’t take long before we moved on to the kitchen. The kitchen already had a nice flow, so we didn’t need to move any plumbing or appliances. Instead, we just gave it the facelift it deserved! We wanted to continue the farmhouse charm and landed on a gorgeous terracotta and ceramic hand-painted tile for the backsplash, concrete look-alike quartz countertops, and two-toned cabinets while keeping the existing hardwood floors. We also removed some upper cabinets that blocked the view from the kitchen into the dining and living room area, resulting in a coveted open concept floor plan. Our clients have always loved to entertain, but now with the remodel complete, they are hosting more than ever, enjoying every second they have in their home.

This expansive elegant marble master bathroom is classic and rates highly on our list of favorite projects. Marble is always a good choice as it is a timeless look and adds to the value of your home. Marble can be one of the higher priced materials and also requires regular maintenance however marble bathrooms are gorgeous and allow flexibility and a vast amount of possibilities for application. This marble inspired bathroom was achieved by mixing real marble with porcelain tile that mimics the look of marble. The result is breath taking, low maintenance and a fraction of the cost! This master bath was expansive with over 300 square feet of usable space and a beautiful high ceiling. Sherry balanced out the room by creating a large double vanity designed with Waypoint cabinetry in painted linen. The higher elevation of the large tower between the vanities make it appear like a customized piece of furniture and the 4 sconces directly mounted to the mirrors are a nice detail that elevate the piece. The Ranier quartz countertops and Mayfair Volakas Giorgio Porcelain tile provide the subtle contrast of grey veining throughout the room. A 66” Draque tub with floor mounted waterfall faucet is beautifully surrounded with the same Volakes Giorgio tile. It is the perfect spot for our client to relax and take a load off while being showered by the light of the unique Alexandria Abstract Chandelier hanging above the tub. When designing the shower enclosure, Sherry blended different types of tile and tile sizes to create interest and movement. Cornice Perla Marble pieces create a beautiful transition between the glossy subway and the marble patterned tile. A bench for sitting is topped off with the same Ranier quartz used for the countertops and was added for the comfort of our client while using the Kohler handshower with extended hose. Bianco Perla basketweave marble are located in the niche and floor which add a different design component for interest. Our client opted to have her half bath remodeled as well. Many of the same components that we used in the master bathroom were used to make this other wise small space appear larger. Overall, we can’t say enough about how happy we were with the end result of this project. We were even happier to know that our client was over the moon about her dream master bathroom. Inspiration for a transitional living room remodel in Atlanta

The goal with this project was to create a functional kids’ bathroom for this family of five and the elegant master bath that their parents so deserve. The client was looking for classic, clean style but with unique details. In the kids’ bathroom, we did floor to ceiling shiplap on the walls and doors. We picked a textured porcelain for the floor tile to reduce slips! The master has herringbone Dolomite marble in two scales on the floor and shower floor, and we used the same Dolomite marble for the floor to ceiling feature wall. Both bathrooms feature custom vanities and modern polished chrome plumbing fixtures. The overall look is coastal, fresh and sophisticated.

Craig Thompson Photography NKBA 1st Place Winner in Large Bath Category Lead Designer: Emily Miller, CKD Co-Designer: Tommy Trzcinski The freestanding Chroma-therapy air tub was positioned in front of a three-sided shower enclosure which carries your eye all the way to the back of the bathroom to make it appear more open and spacious. A ceiling-mounted tub filler was used to keep a clean appearance around the tub, however, the 120” room ceiling height was not an ideal height for the tub filler. A “floating” ceiling was designed and heavily engineered in order to lower the tub filler height to 96”. This “floating” ceiling also housed the ceiling-mounted showerheads and in-shower LED lighting. A three-sided shower was positioned on the center axis of the space, behind a free-standing tub. “His” and “Hers” vanity and commode areas were positioned on either side of the center axis, each with their own door into the central shower.
