The project was divided into three phases over the course of seven years. We were originally hired to re-design the master bath. Phase two was more significant; the garden and parlor levels of the house would be reconfigured to work more efficiently with their lifestyle. The kitchen would double in size and would include a back staircase leading to a cozy den/office and back garden for dining al fresco. The last, most recent phase would include an update to the guest room and a larger, more functional teenage suite. When you work with great clients, it is a pleasure to keep coming back! It speaks to the relationship part of our job, which is one of my favorites.

The “hidden drain” is a tiled drain top which works well with 2x2 tile, not pebbles. We have always had it as an option.
Also, the dark red mahogany colors and shutter door style is reminiscent of a warmer climate. The rainforest green granite is tropical and relates to the matching tile in the shower accent. The neutral beige tile has a subtle bamboo texture on the radiant heated floors.
The layout is purposely done so not to disturb the view of their private marshlands. The mirrors are medicine cabinets, and the posts hold electrical wiring for up-lights, sconces and outlets.
The client also wanted a bar area (3rd sink) with a mini frig and sink for a coffee bar.

The guest bedroom is flanked by two sliding doors. One exit takes you directly to the pool while the other takes its guest to a private zen garden for quiet relaxation and reflection. The guest suite is only connected to the main house by one roof system while being separated by a two sided screen porch.

Living room - contemporary dark wood floor living room idea in San Francisco with white walls, a standard fireplace and a tile fireplace

The 800 square-foot guest cottage is located on the footprint of a slightly smaller original cottage that was built three generations ago. With a failing structural system, the existing cottage had a very low sloping roof, did not provide for a lot of natural light and was not energy efficient. Utilizing high performing windows, doors and insulation, a total transformation of the structure occurred. A combination of clapboard and shingle siding, with standout touches of modern elegance, welcomes guests to their cozy retreat.
The cottage consists of the main living area, a small galley style kitchen, master bedroom, bathroom and sleeping loft above. The loft construction was a timber frame system utilizing recycled timbers from the Balsams Resort in northern New Hampshire. The stones for the front steps and hearth of the fireplace came from the existing cottage’s granite chimney. Stylistically, the design is a mix of both a “Cottage” style of architecture with some clean and simple “Tech” style features, such as the air-craft cable and metal railing system. The color red was used as a highlight feature, accentuated on the shed dormer window exterior frames, the vintage looking range, the sliding doors and other interior elements.

Fireplace of the master's bedroom of this new home construction included the installation of standard fireplace with brick surround, cathedral ceiling with chandelier, light hardwood flooring, recessed lighting and white wainscoting.

The master bathroom was accentuated with a large & luxurious teak walk-in shower which includes a custom bench by Jonathon Scianna, offering a spa-like feel. The bathtub was replaced to have a chic, elongated tile surround and built-in recessed teak niche. The final touch on the new tub comes from the mini recessed LED lights above, illuminating the area and adding a special feel to the space. We also installed a brand new floating double vanity with trendy wall mount faucets with a teak backsplash and teak framed mirrors, which look lovely against the metallic shimmer of the wall color.
Additional features for the master bathroom include a new toilet, new floor, new barn door/mirror with Haffel Hardware, and a large linen closet with adjustable shelves.

It's the details that make all the difference in this master bedroom. The floor to ceiling bookcase adds height, storage, and convenience for him and her. The overhead lighting also adds ease to the room with an inner light switch located on each side of the open shelving.

This boy's bunk room was designed to mimic an old sleeping porch. The floor is actually a tile plank that has a crackle glaze so it feels like an old painted porch floor. Three windows wrap on three sides of the room. A panoramic view out to the lake can be enjoyed. The remaining wall actually incorporates the cedar shingle siding from the exterior to make it feel very authentic as though it is an enclosed sleeping porch. The ceiling was incorporated with a wall covering that has stars so it creates somewhat of a feel of a nighttime sky.
