We’re enthusiastic proponents of taking big chances in small rooms. A bold design choice won’t be overwhelming in tiny doses, so why take the safe route of a white kitchen when you can have soft blush? This NYC galley kitchen sports Farrow and Ball’s “Calamine” in a velvety matte sheen. The delicate hue is grounded by honed black granite countertops and a black range. Though the pink and black scheme may be reminiscent of 50’s-era bathroom tiles, there’s nothing retro about this space. Frameless full-overlay cabinets maximize interior storage capacity, and the stepped Shaker doors lend contemporary flair. Continuity is maintained by the paneled appliances. Streamlined knobs and pulls feature a brushed gold finish. To temper both the pink and black, a white geometric backsplash tiles were selected; the white metal hood virtually disappears against them. A cozy window seat with a wide drawer below is a focal point in the room; it’s flanked by custom cabinets that extend down to the seat and combine open and closed storage. The surprise element is the pop of thick natural white oak display shelves over the sink. The whole look is completed with metal dome pendants, spray painted to match the cabinetry.

Relocating from Australia, our clients envisioned a new lakefront home that could accommodate guests and lakefront entertaining. Situated on Pine Lake in West Bloomfield and completed in July 2024, we created new spaces and reimagined old ones. The previous oversized dining area at the front of the home was divided into an entry closet and a larger, more functional powder room.
For this Powder Room, we wanted to minimize impact to the exterior wall and existing window. To do so, we reinforced the new vanity wall and floated the large custom quartzite vanity, and notched the sides out so as to maintain depth at the sink but still allow for the smaller dimension at the window wall.
With earthy tones and an organic vibe, we offset the blush tones with matte black plumbing, hardware and lighting. For added interest, a Phillip Jeffries “waves of wood” wall covering extends along the vanity wall, playing off the curved tones of the hardware hardware. Serene and striking is the perfect balance for this new space!

Before and After
Designer Laura Gummerman has us tickled pink with this bathroom makeover. A tub surround of 2x12 Glass Tile in soft blush Rosy Finch makes bathtime a dream, while 3x12 Ceramic Tile in matte white Calcite adds subtle visual interest in a herringbone pattern across the floor.

The small basement block window acts much like a skylight in this bright and fresh guest bathroom of the basement guest room. The floating quartz vanity, matte black fixtures, round mirror, and custom reclaimed wood and steel bench provide both style and function for the small footprint.
Enlarged subway tile provides a nice counterpoint to the retro floor tile. The introduction of wooden hooks found on Etsy and the reclaimed bench top add warmth to the predominately white space as do the blush pink towels.
