In this project, our client had specific goals and desires for her bathroom renovation to accommodate her changing needs. She requested a roll-in shower with an ADA accessible vanity along with custom storage that fit her farmhouse aesthetics. This presented a unique opportunity to build a custom storage piece that fit her exact use of the space. We completed this project in two phases so that our homeowners would not be without a functioning bathroom for more than a few days at a time. The shower build and tile work was done in Phase I and the vanity and storage unit was completed in Phase II.
We designed the vanity with a lowered countertop height on one end for easier access to the sink and a roll under countertop hidden behind cabinet doors. The barn door is situated to slide to cover either the closet for privacy or the shower opening to prevent steam from escaping. The two-toned cabinets were selected to create interest and depth since the unit is so large, and the white vessel sinks contrast beautifully with the dark granite countertop and linear stone backsplash. The finished product was a truly customized bathroom that maximized space, function, mobility, and design.

The challenge of this master bath was to create a luxurious transitional style bathroom that offered the client a shower spa, functional storage, while updating the appearance to embrace an aesthetically pleasing pallet. The area where the soaker tub sat was transformed into a small sitting area that is practical and an innovative use of the space. The overall design of this space maximizes storage in both the vanity and closet areas, enhancing the overall function and versatility that provides the client a place for everything. The client is very pleased with the excellent detailed workmanship and is very satisfied with the result of the project. The products installed are Medallion Cherry cabinets with Cappuccino stain, a tiled framed mirror, decorative hardware from Top Knobs. On the countertop is Silestone quartz with Amelia porcelain tile installed in the shower. Rubbermaid closet system was installed for organization.

This Kansas City-area home organization project focused on creating functional, design-forward systems throughout several of the family's most-used spaces, including the kitchen, pantry, butler's pantry, and mudroom.
Each space was thoughtfully planned around the family's everyday routines, with organizational products and systems selected to maximize storage, improve visibility, and make frequently used items easier to access and maintain.
In the mudroom, an existing cabinet was transformed into a family command center with dedicated spaces for each family member, grab-and-go items, paper management, note-taking supplies, and a charging station. By connecting the organization across these hardworking spaces, the finished home feels cohesive, functional, and easier to navigate throughout the day.

The DSA Residential Team designed this 4,000 SF Coastal Contemporary Spec Home. The two-story home was designed with an open concept for the living areas, maximizing the waterfront views and incorporating as much natural light as possible. The home was designed with a circular drive entrance and concrete block / turf courtyard, affording access to the home's two garages. DSA worked within the community's HOA guidelines to accomplish the look and feel the client wanted to achieve for the home. The team provided architectural renderings for the spec home to help with marketing efforts and to help future buyers envision the final product.

Although this kitchen was light and airy to begin with, it lacked the dramatic, modern look that our customers were looking for. The contrast of the light countertops and wall splash from the dark cabinets and shiplap made for an extremely striking finished product. The new cabinets were from the Kitchen Solvers Classic Collection line done in a mission door in Ebony. Each and every cabinet in the kitchen is decked out with storage solutions to maximize the efficiency of the space. The new countertop is a Hanstone Quartz done in Montauk and a Hanstone Quartz full-height wall splash was also added. The addition of commercial-style appliances also added to the form and function of the kitchen.

*Layout and Spatial Arrangement:*
The layout maximizes the available space, creating an open and airy atmosphere. The free-standing tub becomes a focal point, strategically placed to offer a sense of luxury and relaxation. The custom glass shower enclosure contributes to the open feel, allowing natural light to permeate the space.
*Color Scheme:*
A neutral color palette dominates the design, with shades of white, gray, and beige creating a timeless and sophisticated ambiance. The introduction of a modern champagne bronze finish for fixtures adds a touch of warmth and elegance to the overall look.
*Flooring and Wall Finishes:*
Large-format tiles with a polished finish cover the bathroom floor, providing a seamless and easy-to-maintain surface. The walls may feature a combination of tiles and perhaps a feature wall with a textured or patterned finish to add visual interest.
*Fixtures and Cabinetry:*
The centerpiece is a freestanding bathtub with clean lines, possibly positioned near a large window to capitalize on natural light. The fixtures, such as the sink faucets, showerheads, and towel bars, boast a modern champagne bronze finish, creating a cohesive and stylish look. Custom-built cabinetry with minimalist handles complements the overall design, offering both functionality and aesthetics.
*Custom Glass Shower Enclosure:*
The shower area is enclosed with custom glass, ensuring a seamless and open appearance. This enclosure not only enhances the modern aesthetic but also allows the beauty of the shower tiles to be showcased. The shower itself features a rain showerhead and perhaps a built-in niche for bath products.
*Lighting and Mirrors:*
Modern and energy-efficient LED lighting fixtures are strategically placed to illuminate the space effectively. Large mirrors, possibly with integrated lighting, contribute to the sense of spaciousness and add a touch of glamour to the design.

This long galley kitchen has become a contemporary pre-war classic masterpiece. With not much space to work with, and a full size washer and vented dryer to accommodate, we made the most of every inch and concealing the reconstructed electrical, plumbing and ventilation systems. The beams were tucked behind custom built-in shelving and upper cabinetry extending to the ceiling for clean lines. A staggered cabinet depth was designed to maximize space needed and remove the tunnel effect. The mirror backsplash was installed to create the illusion of width. The beauty of this kitchen is enhanced by its Silverblue Cleft Slate floors, period pewter hardware, custom under-cabinet lighting, honed statuary marble backsplash and white glass countertop. While compact, functionality isn’t compromised in the least with the inclusion of a full size dishwasher, pull-out garbage bins, and a full size Bertazzoni range and even a Marvel wine fridge. This bright, white pre-war classic kitchen renovation hits every mark with polished luxury details and enhanced utility.

This recently completed outdoor living space was created for a really great family in Chatham. Their original backyard design included a deck surrounded by mulch planting beds. We demolished all original elements and constructed an all bluestone patio that ran the entire width of their home. This made it possible to double their usable space. We used uniformly sized all blue bluestone tiles. We built them an outdoor kitchen and bar - complete with grill, shelving, built-in trash can and refrigerator. Pearl Blue quartz was used for the counter top and we rounded the bar side in order to maximize sitting space. The perimeter of the patio received a 20" high sitting wall with a 2" thick bluestone tread cap. LED strip lighting was installed below the wall cap to provide accent lighting at night. At the yard entrance, we built (2) raised piers complete with centered light fixtures on top. The custom gas-start/wood-burn fireplace really sets this patio apart from most. By curving the hearth and hollowing out the interior, we were able to create a wood log storage area without sacrificing any of their usable space on the sides. The gas dial is concealed on the side of the fireplace and is operated by key. Throughout the entire patio you will see cultured stone siding that provides the perfect blend of continuity and complimentary colors. This project was a huge success and the client is very happy with the finished product. We couldn't have asked to work for better people.

The Home
A family heirloom full of warm memories passed down for generations to come greets you after opening the beautiful knotty alder front
door. The rear staircase and separate back entrance allows for multi-generations to share this home.
The Eagles Nest is a place for all to land. The five bedroom, four bath mountain modern plan offers several areas for relaxing and
entertaining. Upon entering, you are welcomed by the warmth of the beams, hickory floors and inviting fireplace. The overall environment gently whispers, “come in, sit down and relax”. The back staircase off the kitchen leads you to a private oasis. The lower level is designed to serve two purposes. It can be a separate living quarter because of its private entrance, or an extension of the house for entertaining.
The open floor plan maximizes square footage for all to enjoy and partake, or for one to find their own quiet space.

The Interior Design
Inspired by nature’s palette and a touch of modern, the Eagles Nest is a calm haven of earth tones and casual elegance. The interior is an inviting blend of subtle neutrals and pops of color, combined with metals, textures, and fine finishes, creating a transitional rustic design. Entertain guests in the large downstairs rec room with a glass of wine at the built-in bar, or take on an opponent with a game of foosball.
The homeowners joined forces with Caprice King at Upstage Furniture Consignments to paint the pallet of the home. Caprice King staged the home with additional furnishings and accessories, lending the home a designer’s touch while utilizing her spatial expertise and attention to detail.

The HingeHouse project was the result of a unique partnership between an independent architect and a pre-fabricated home manufacturer – a partnership among the first of its kind in the country. Today, many pre-fab companies have adopted this collaborative approach recognizing that homeowners are looking for unique, custom homes while taking advantage of reliable and predictable construction methods and costs.
In 2008, the partnership was created to rethink pre-engineered post-and-beam and panelized systems to connect clients to a more modern and integrated set of design values. By integrating systems, factory design approach, manufacturing methodologies and construction sequences with design criteria grounded in sustainable planning and rigorous implementation, HingeHouse was developed.
HingeHouse is a fully-customizable pre-fab home which can be configured to meet the needs of any site, and any family. It is flexible and expandable using Deck House engineered building components. Starting with basic floor plans that are optimized spatially to Deck’s standard components, the living spaces are rotated around a "hinge” point. This design solution addresses the limitations and challenges of a particular site, while highlighting the best aspects of it. HingeHouse considers passive solar orientation depending on where the home is placed on the site and how it is “hinged”. It provides for maximum cross-ventilation from prevailing winds, preserves existing site formations and trees, and works on sloping grades. It addresses specific desired views while mitigating unwanted adjacencies, and provides great flexibility for entry sequences.
HingeHouse uses Deck’s standard sloped roof post-and-beam component system to create a lyrical, light-filled home. The western red cedar exterior is sculptural and dynamic. Interior spaces are lofty, with great view potential using Deck’s own custom-made mahogany windows. The “hinge” of the home, where the two building forms come together, has the added benefit of creating a desirable outdoor living room, complete with an outdoor fireplace. The "hinge” provides both a tool for maximizing customization and spatial orientation and a center of activity at the heart of the home.
Since this partnership in 2008, Maryann Thompson Architects and MATHISON | MATHISON ARCHITECTS have worked with Acorn Deck House Company on numerous full or partial pre-fab projects in the Boston Area, Western Massachusetts, Maryland and Michigan. We have become an advocate for their services and products because it offers advantages on a variety of levels including schedule, cost and quality.
Services provided included visioning, programming, concept design, schematic design, construction documentation and construction administration.
