Inspiration for a large contemporary terra-cotta tile kitchen/dining room combo remodel in New York with beige walls

CLASSICALLY MODERN HAVEN BY THE HILLS A mid-century Eichler renovation, optimized for sunlight and the vistas of the valley. Structural adaptations allow for extensive glazing, achieving seamless integration of the landscape to create unity and spatial flow.

It’s first impression was memorable as immediately after entering the front door, just past the dining table, there was a tree growing in the middle of home! Upon further inspection of the space it became apparent that this home had undergone several alterations during its lifetime... The kitchen was once a space that revealed the home’s layered history. It was evident there had been an addition as the dropped ceiling exposed where garage space had been captured to become part of the kitchen. By re-configuring the layout, we were able to create a gathering area at the peninsula, additional storage space, as well as add a hood fan – something the original space was lacking. Details like the Grand Canal paint colour from Sherwin Williams paired with the vertical grain walnut cabinets create a modern-vintage feel for this kitchen.

This project is the third collaboration between the client and DEANE. They wanted their kitchen renovation to feel updated, fresh and modern, while also customized to their tastes. Frameless white cabinetry with modern, narrow-framed doors and satin nickel hardware contrasts cleanly against the opposing rift-oak wood cabinetry. The counters are a combination of polished white glass with Caesarstone countertops in Airy Concrete quartz providing durable, functional workspaces. The single-slab, White Calacatta Sapien Stone porcelain backsplash provides a dramatic backdrop for the floating shelves with integrated lighting. The owners selected a dual-fuel, 6 burner Wolf 48" range with griddle, and decided to panel the SubZero refrigerator and freezer columns that flank the message center/charging station. The custom, boxed hood adds bold lines, while the full Waterstone faucet suite is a memorable feature. It was important to create areas for entertaining, so the pantry features functional, dark navy lower cabinetry for storage with a counter for secondary appliances. The dining area was elevated by the custom furniture piece with sliding doors and wood-framed glass shelves, allowing the display of decorative pieces, as well as buffet serving. The humidity and temperature-controlled custom wine unit holds enough bottles to host the ultimate dinner party

Upon entering this outdoor space, the atmosphere of a resort surrounds you and the raised spa makes for a perfect vantage point for taking it all in. The linear fire feature is another stunning and memorable element of this space. Ryan Hughes' custom design beautifully beckons family and friends to relax and enjoy life in the resort-like backyard. From beautiful Travertine tile surfaces, this space produces a major “wow” moment and brings the modern vibe and tranquil beauty that was desired in this northern Virginia backyard.

The labor pains were memorable but what a beautiful baby.... We removed a defunct chimney from the Range alcove to allow this improved and highly functional layout. There were also three separate ceilings (including framing) that got removed. This allowed us to raise the center section to its full 10' height and incorporate a second band of two-part crown molding. More on the reclaimed wood to follow...
