This is an example of a large contemporary drought-tolerant and full sun front yard retaining wall landscape in Austin for spring.

This landscape project features a series of tiered retaining walls constructed with High Format Rosetta Outcroppings, designed to stabilize a sloped backyard while improving the overall appearance of the landscape. Installed for a homeowner in Westerville, Ohio, the retaining wall system addresses significant hillside erosion while creating a structured and visually appealing outdoor environment.
The project includes three distinct tiers of Rosetta Outcropping retaining walls, strategically installed along the back hillside to help control soil movement and reduce erosion. The large-scale stone appearance of the Rosetta Outcroppings provides the look of natural quarried stone while offering the structural strength required for retaining wall applications in sloped terrain.
Each tier of the retaining wall system helps slow water runoff and stabilize the hillside by creating stepped levels across the slope. This tiered approach not only improves erosion control but also adds dimension and depth to the backyard landscape.
The textured surfaces and natural stone character of the High Format Rosetta Outcroppings blend naturally with the surrounding greenery, allowing the retaining walls to complement the existing landscape while providing essential structural support.
Retaining wall systems like this are commonly used throughout Westerville, Ohio and Central Ohio to address drainage challenges and hillside erosion. By incorporating professionally installed retaining walls, homeowners can transform unstable slopes into functional, attractive landscape features while protecting their property from ongoing soil loss.
Projects like this demonstrate how thoughtfully designed retaining walls in Westerville, Ohio can provide both practical erosion control and long-term landscape enhancement for homes throughout Central Ohio.

The breakfast area focal point is seen from the front door and is captured by a beautiful slab of quartzite hung on the wall as art. The sideboard underneath the slab is intricately designed with inlaid mother of pearl and, when opened, lights up to highlight bottles inside. We used the existing table and moved the neutral upholstered chairs from the dining area. The previously built-in bench area used for reading, is now finished off with custom cushions and large throw pillows for a comfortable rest area.
The dining area is now complete with colorful dining chairs that transition nicely into the large living area. Because our client loved pattern, we decided to use chairs that had a fun but unusual circle pattern on the back panel and play up the color with a fun striped fabric. The table is adorned with a silk floral arrangement and bright green circle hurricanes.

This 1910 West Highlands home was so compartmentalized that you couldn't help to notice you were constantly entering a new room every 8-10 feet. There was also a 500 SF addition put on the back of the home to accommodate a living room, 3/4 bath, laundry room and back foyer - 350 SF of that was for the living room. Needless to say, the house needed to be gutted and replanned.
Kitchen+Dining+Laundry-Like most of these early 1900's homes, the kitchen was not the heartbeat of the home like they are today. This kitchen was tucked away in the back and smaller than any other social rooms in the house. We knocked out the walls of the dining room to expand and created an open floor plan suitable for any type of gathering. As a nod to the history of the home, we used butcherblock for all the countertops and shelving which was accented by tones of brass, dusty blues and light-warm greys. This room had no storage before so creating ample storage and a variety of storage types was a critical ask for the client. One of my favorite details is the blue crown that draws from one end of the space to the other, accenting a ceiling that was otherwise forgotten.
Primary Bath-This did not exist prior to the remodel and the client wanted a more neutral space with strong visual details. We split the walls in half with a datum line that transitions from penny gap molding to the tile in the shower. To provide some more visual drama, we did a chevron tile arrangement on the floor, gridded the shower enclosure for some deep contrast an array of brass and quartz to elevate the finishes.
Powder Bath-This is always a fun place to let your vision get out of the box a bit. All the elements were familiar to the space but modernized and more playful. The floor has a wood look tile in a herringbone arrangement, a navy vanity, gold fixtures that are all servants to the star of the room - the blue and white deco wall tile behind the vanity.
Full Bath-This was a quirky little bathroom that you'd always keep the door closed when guests are over. Now we have brought the blue tones into the space and accented it with bronze fixtures and a playful southwestern floor tile.
Living Room & Office-This room was too big for its own good and now serves multiple purposes. We condensed the space to provide a living area for the whole family plus other guests and left enough room to explain the space with floor cushions. The office was a bonus to the project as it provided privacy to a room that otherwise had none before.

Architect: Michelle Penn, AIA This barn home is modeled after an existing Nebraska barn in Lancaster County. Because fresh water is not available from a well nor county water, water will be provided by rainwater harvesting. The water will be collected from a gutter system, go into a series of nine holding tanks and then go through a water filtration system to provide drinking water for the home. A greywater system will then recycle water from the sinks and showers to be reused in the toilets. Low-flow fixtures will be used throughout the home to conserve water. The paint is Calypso Blue 727 by Benjamin Moore.

The Yin-Yang House is a net-zero energy single-family home in a quiet Venice, CA neighborhood. The design objective was to create a space for a large and growing family with several children, which would create a calm, relaxed and organized environment that emphasizes public family space. The home also serves as a place to entertain, and a welcoming space for teenagers as they seek social space with friends.
The home is organized around a series of courtyards and other outdoor spaces that integrate with the interior of the house. Facing the street the house appears to be solid. However, behind the steel entry door is a courtyard, which reveals the indoor-outdoor nature of the house behind the solid exterior. From the entry courtyard, the entire space to the rear garden wall can be seen; the first clue of the home’s spatial connection between inside and out. These spaces are designed for entertainment, and the 40 foot sliding glass door to the living room enhances the harmonic relationship of the main room, allowing the owners to host many guests without the feeling of being overburdened.
The tensions of the house’s exterior are subtly underscored by a 12-inch steel band that hews close to, but sometimes rises above or falls below the floor line of the second floor – a continuous loop moving inside and out like a pen that is never lifted from the page, but reinforces the intent to spatially weave together the indoors with the outside as a single space.
Scale manipulation also plays a formal role in the design of the structure. From the rear, the house appears to be a single-story volume. The large master bedroom window and the outdoor steps are scaled to support this illusion. It is only when the steps are animated with people that one realizes the true scale of the house is two stories.
The kitchen is the heart of the house, with an open working area that allows the owner, an accomplished chef, to converse with friends while cooking. Bedrooms are intentionally designed to be very small and simple; allowing for larger public spaces, emphasizing the family over individual domains. The breakfast room looks across an outdoor courtyard to the guest room/kids playroom, establishing a visual connection while defining the separation of uses. The children can play outdoors while under adult supervision from the dining area or the office, or do homework in the office while adults occupy the adjacent outdoor or indoor space.
Many of the materials used, including the bamboo interior, composite stone and tile countertops and bathroom finishes are recycled, and reinforce the environmental DNA of the house, which also has a green roof. Blown-in cellulose insulation, radiant heating and a host of other sustainable features aids in the performance of the building’s heating and cooling.
The active systems in the home include a 12 KW solar photovoltaic panel system, the largest such residential system available on the market. The solar panels also provide shade from the sun, preventing the house from becoming overheated. The owners have been in the home for over nine months and have yet to receive a power bill.

The Chelsea Loft combined two adjacent lofts into a four bedroom home. The home was designed to flexibly adapt with the owners as they grew their young family. The design also preserved the open industrial spaces of the original loft building. These open spaces were created for multiple activities throughout the day: entertaining, cooking, lounging, playing, exercising, and working. Sliding wall panels and “deep” walls housed numerous storage systems, allowing for areas to be adapted differently throughout the day. The adaptability of the spaces was the essential aspect to the design-- transforming the owners’ everyday needs into a flexible and well-loved home. The interior partitions were also minimized, which maximizied the natural light flowing from three sides of the loft. One of these sides included an outdoor terrace, which was also renovated to provide a more open connection between the interior and exterior.
