Much of the non-native foliage, which can struggle in LA's climate, is placed in contained gardens, so it can easily be protected from the elements. Unlike accent grasses, succulents hold hydration and pose little danger when potted and well maintained. Ceramic pots will not burn. Like low foliage, they can be placed to keep embers from drifting against vulnerable areas of a home.
This photo was taken in 2009, prior to the requirement for a Zone 0. We would not place chip or shredded mulch against a home. The Oregon Grape, while very heat and drought resistant, would be placed further from the home, outside of the ember resistant zone.

We were asked to create something really special for one of our most admired clients. This home has been a labor of love for both of us as we finally made it exactly what she wanted it to be. After many concept ideas we landed on a design that is stunning! All of the elements on her wish list are incorporated in this challenging, multi-level landscape: A front yard to match the modern traditional-style home while creating privacy from the street; a side yard that proudly connects the front and back; and a lower level with plantings in lush greens, whites, purples and pinks and plentiful lawn space for kids and dogs. Her outdoor living space includes an outdoor kitchen with bar, outdoor living room with fireplace, dining patio, a bedroom-adjacent lounging patio with modern fountain, enclosed vegetable garden, rose garden walk with European-style fountain and meditation bench, and a fire pit with sitting area on the upper level to take in the panoramic views of the sunset over the wooded ridge. Outdoor lighting brings it alive at night, and for parties you can’t beat the killer sound system!

The client requested a soothing color palette of grays, blues and greens, but with a pop of pink. This accent color was brought in with the painting above the fireplace, throw pillows and fresh flowers. A gray & white medallion Dhurrie rug anchors the seating area. Benjamin Moore's Gray Owl at 50% on the walls provides a neutral backdrop for this blue and white palette.

Lush with overflowing layers of cut greenery, this windowbox is full of exciting steal-me ideas. Branches are stood upright in the back while others are inserted horizontally, creating a trough into which a pile of fresh, red apples are balanced. Capping it off are pinecones and branches of winterberry. True, apples might attract deer, but maybe that’s okay!
