Falcon House is located on Falcon Ridge Road, which winds along a steeply inclined ridge in a stretch of foothills within Carmel Valley in Monterey County. An old lichen covered barn and split rail, cedar fences characterize this area known as Markham Ranch, and contrast sharply with the preponderance of sprawling, large estate-style homes, many more at-home in the Italian countryside than any landscape of California.
Designed for a young family, Falcon House responds to the family’s desire to live a more modest lifestyle, eschewing overt displays of extravagance for an intimate and deferential relation to nature.
The 3,200-square-foot residence occupies a difficult portion of the northern slope of a hillside, overlooking a verdant valley and oriented toward Castle Rock in the distance. The steep terrain necessitated a compartmentalized plan capable of negotiating the gentle hillock at the center of the site. A corridor bridge spans two pieces of the house, uniting living and sleeping spaces and allowing an existing watercourse to flow essentially through the house unobstructed.
Large panels of glass open the living spaces to the landscape, beneath the deep overhang of a butterfly roof. Operable clerestories placed high on the window-wall allow prevailing breezes to cool the interior spaces. The bedroom wing of the house hugs the hillside as it turns to the west, ensuring privacy from the main living spaces. The sense of seclusion and protection of this wing is reinforced by its lower roofline and its embedment into the hill.
Initial resistance by neighboring homeowners has given way to appreciation, having seen the results of careful siting and a material and color palate sympathetic to the surrounding hillsides. The dwelling embodies an attitude of respect for the landscape, and through that perspective Falcon House has become as natural a part of its environment as the hawks flying overhead.

: As part of a comprehensive home addition project, this kitchen underwent a transformative remodel to provide the homeowners with a more spacious and functional cooking area. The previous kitchen layout was too small and restrictive for their culinary pursuits, necessitating additional counter space. A larger window was installed to introduce more natural light from the west, while cherry cabinets and updated matte tile flooring in a herringbone pattern infuse a modern but warm touch into the craftsman-style residence.

This is the rebuild of the original walk-in shower after a pan leak necessitated tearing it all down. The homeowner liked the original glass block design. We were able to salvage all of these, though ended up adding the base tiled row to fill in for the few glass blocks we lost in demolition. This photo also highlights the new corner bench seat and shower niche which were added to the original design.

This new construction timber lake house kitchen captures the long water views from both the island prep sink and perimeter clean up sink, which are both flanked by their own respective dishwashers. The homeowners often entertain parties of 14 to 20 friends and family who love to congregate in the kitchen and adjoining keeping room which necessitated the six-place snack bar. Although a large space overall, the work triangle was kept tight. Gourmet chef appliances include 2 warming drawers, 2 ovens and a steam oven, and a microwave, with a hidden drop-down TV tucked between them.

As with many kosher kitchens, this one has 2 sinks. Some pipes running to upper floors necessitated a column at the right end of the counter. Even with the reduced depth we had enough room to tuck in a trash can. Also note the piece of marble sitting on counter acting as a divider between milk and meat.

The expansive view through the kitchen to the backyard was created by removing a furrdown over the peninsula. Track lighting was retained to illuminate that area, in concert with new recessed cans in the kitchen area. Both owners are avid cooks, necessitating a large area of unimpeded space to work together. The color palette is a warm blend of saltillo tile, wood stain cabinets, and eye-catching backsplash. Photo: Dan Bawden.

The original poorly-lit and narrow staircase failed to meet IRC code requirements, necessitating a wider and more accommodating design. To structurally secure the new spacious welded steel and solid oak free-floating staircase and to move the catwalk by three feet involved close collaboration with structural engineers and the implementation of a steel I beam extending from the front toward the back of the house, with a 45-degree turn to connect with existing structural supports on the second floor.

With a partial exposure on the home, the grade change necessitated that we landscape the slope with plant beds, outcropping stone and stone steps.

The pool wall forms were constructed approximately 8 feet above the existing grade, necessitating a robust 4' keyway footing below the subgrade. Expert pool builder Jim Chandler utilized a high-strength gunite mixture for the pool structure, ensuring durability and resilience. This advanced infinity pool construction highlights our commitment to precision and quality in high-end pool design.

The extensive renovation of this Colonial Revival influenced residence aimed to blend historic period details with modern amenities. Challenges for this project were that the existing front entry porch and side sunroom were structurally unsound with considerable settling, water damage and damage to the shingle roof structure. This necessitated the total demolition and rebuilding of these spaces, but with modern materials that resemble the existing characteristics of this residence. A new flat roof structure with ornamental railing systems were utilized in place of the original roof design.

The kitchen was strategically relocated, seamlessly swapping places with the family room and positioning it closer to the garage for convenience, particularly when carrying groceries. This transition necessitated the removal of a load-bearing wall, expertly replaced with a new beam, and the elimination of built-ins and niches. Traditional details were refreshed, and the floor plan was artfully opened up.

Red glass tiles set into the diagonal blue glass tiles create the wave pattern. Getting the swerve just right, at times, meant moving one tile 1/8", thereby necessitating moving all the other tiles a very slight amount to maintain the smooth curve.
