Perched along the hillside of Via De La Paz, this residence is defined by the way it negotiates elevation. At its core, the project is an exploration of proportion and hierarchy — a multi-level home shaped by the site’s natural topography and oriented to capture ocean views. The design works with the constraints of the hillside, using changes in elevation to create a layered sequence of indoor and outdoor spaces. Traditional Spanish elements inform the overall character, while a more restrained approach keeps the home grounded and livable. Stone and stucco cladding, a tiled roof, and arched openings reference classic precedents, while steel doors and windows introduce a quieter transitional quality. The layout was designed to support California’s indoor–outdoor lifestyle without sacrificing intimacy. Terraces, balconies, and connected living spaces create openness, while the scale and flow of each level remain thoughtful and contained.

Inspiration for a rustic home design remodel in Atlanta

The Kipling house is a new addition to the Montrose neighborhood. Designed for a family of five, it allows for generous open family zones oriented to large glass walls facing the street and courtyard pool. The courtyard also creates a buffer between the master suite and the children's play and bedroom zones. The master suite echoes the first floor connection to the exterior, with large glass walls facing balconies to the courtyard and street. Fixed wood screens provide privacy on the first floor while a large sliding second floor panel allows the street balcony to exchange privacy control with the study. Material changes on the exterior articulate the zones of the house and negotiate structural loads.

A New Home in the Craftsman Style in Burlingame, California Our design of this large house in Burlingame was inspired by nearby Craftsman style homes. We also designed the swimming pool, pool house and bridges in the back yard. Carefully designed wood brackets and details complement the strong symmetrical form of the exterior. Traditional wood and leaded glass windows, stone masonry and slate tile roofs with copper gutters also contribute to this authentic and timeless design. This rich palette of materials and detailing are continued inside the house with coffered wood ceilings, painted wainscot paneling and trim, custom fireplace surrounds, decorative ironwork railings, and a curved entry stair. We represented our client in sensitive negotiations with neighbors of multiple Planning Commission hearings. The kitchen was featured in the 2006 Burlingame Classic Kitchen Tour. We also designed two bridges over the creek in the backyard.

Greg Hadley Photography Instead of a straight hallway, our designer suggested a more dramatic connection between the addition and original home—one that would allow light the flood through both floors. Though the home had 9-foot ceilings on the lower level, in the stair area the ceiling was only 7-feet. To open up the space, she opted for a step up to a landing across from the original stairs. The landing is open to the lower level. To create this floating landing, our engineer suggested adding a stringer beam that runs from the existing landing to the new landing. The windows in the landing face the north, so we added a skylight to bring in more natural light.

This decades-old bathroom had a perplexing layout. A corner bidet had never worked, a toilet stood out almost in the center of the space, and stairs were the only way to negotiate an enormous tub. Inspite of the vast size of the bathroom it had little countertop work area and no storage space. In a nutshell: For all the square footage, the bathroom wasn’t indulgent or efficient. In addition, the homeowners wanted the bathroom to feel spa-like and restful. Our design team collaborated with the homeowners to create a streamlined, elegant space with loads of natural light, luxe touches and practical storage. In went a double vanity with plenty of elbow room, plus under lighted cabinets in a warm, rich brown to hide and organize all the extras. In addition a free-standing tub underneath a window nook, with a glassed-in, roomy shower just steps away. This bathroom is all about the details and the countertop and the fireplace are no exception. The former is leathered quartzite with a less reflective finish that has just enough texture and a hint of sheen to keep it from feeling too glam. Topped by a 12-inch backsplash, with faucets mounted directly on the wall, for a little more unexpected visual punch. Finally a double-sided fireplace unites the master bathroom with the adjacent bedroom. On the bedroom side, the fireplace surround is a floor-to-ceiling marble slab and a lighted alcove creates continuity with the accent lighting throughout the bathroom.

When a family living in Singapore decided to purchase a New York City pied-à-terre, they settled on the historic Langham Place, a 60-floor building along 5th Ave which features a mixture of permanent residencies and 5-star hotel suites. Immediately after purchasing the condo, they reached out to Decor Aid, and tasked us with designing a home that would reflect their jet-setting lifestyle and chic sensibility. Book Your Free In-Home Consultation Connecting to the historic Tiffany Building at 404 5th Ave, the exterior of Langham Place is a combination of highly contemporary architecture and 1920’s art deco design. And with this highly unique architecture, came highly angular, outward leaning floor-to-ceiling windows, which would prove to be our biggest design challenge. One of the apartment’s quirks was negotiating an uneven balance of natural light throughout the space. Parts of the apartment, such one of the kids’ bedrooms, feature floor-to-ceiling windows and an abundance of natural light, while other areas, such as one corner of the living room, receive little natural light. By sourcing a combination of contemporary, low-profile furniture pieces and metallic accents, we were able to compensate for apartment’s pockets of darkness. A low-profile beige sectional from Room & Board was an obvious choice, which we complemented with a lucite console and a bronze Riverstone coffee table from Mitchell Gold+Bob Williams. Circular tables were placed throughout the apartment in order to establish a design scheme that would be easy to walk through. A marble tulip table from Sit Down New York provides an opulent dining room space, without crowding the floor plan. The finishing touches include a sumptuous swivel chair from Safavieh, to create a sleek, welcoming vacation home for this international client.

The "village" of structures is designed to open and close seasonally with large sliding barn doors. These also modulate light, air and views into and out of the cottages. Carefully positioned to take advantage of the rich variety of views and sloping topography, the cottages have integral terraces and retaining walls to negotiate the undulating land-form. One arrives at the high point of the site and the long barn axis and navigates between the cottages to the main entrance. Once inside, the home deliberately reveals unique views to the ocean, mountains and surrounding spruce forest.
