Custom designed by MossCreek, this four-seasons resort home in a New England vacation destination showcases natural stone, square timbers, vertical and horizontal wood siding, cedar shingles, and beautiful hardwood floors. MossCreek's design staff worked closely with the owners to create spaces that brought the outside in, while at the same time providing for cozy evenings during the ski season. MossCreek also made sure to design lots of nooks and niches to accommodate the homeowners' eclectic collection of sports and skiing memorabilia. What Makes an Ocean Wave, Wave? The quintessential New England ocean-front cottage poised for perfection, how could you possibly improve? What was already an amazing property on the shore in Ipswich, MA, gave way to a ‘face lift’. The ocean facing roofline with steep pitch created a blank canvas, our favorite! Constructing an eyebrow shaped dormer transformed the second floor by ‘opening the home’s eyes’, adding a master bedroom suite and reading nook…to die for. Ocean views and natural light were maximized by the strong use of glass and transparent finishes. Ward Jewell, AIA was asked to design a comfortable one-story stone and wood pool house that was "barn-like" in keeping with the owner’s gentleman farmer concept. Thus, Mr. Jewell was inspired to create an elegant New England Stone Farm House designed to provide an exceptional environment for them to live, entertain, cook and swim in the large reflection lap pool. Mr. Jewell envisioned a dramatic vaulted great room with hand selected 200 year old reclaimed wood beams and 10 foot tall pocketing French doors that would connect the house to a pool, deck areas, loggia and lush garden spaces, thus bringing the outdoors in. A large cupola “lantern clerestory” in the main vaulted ceiling casts a natural warm light over the graceful room below. The rustic walk-in stone fireplace provides a central focal point for the inviting living room lounge. Important to the functionality of the pool house are a chef’s working farm kitchen with open cabinetry, free-standing stove and a soapstone topped central island with bar height seating. Grey washed barn doors glide open to reveal a vaulted and beamed quilting room with full bath and a vaulted and beamed library/guest room with full bath that bookend the main space. The private garden expanded and evolved over time. After purchasing two adjacent lots, the owners decided to redesign the garden and unify it by eliminating the tennis court, relocating the pool and building an inspired "barn". The concept behind the garden’s new design came from Thomas Jefferson’s home at Monticello with its wandering paths, orchards, and experimental vegetable garden. As a result this small organic farm, was born. Today the farm produces more than fifty varieties of vegetables, herbs, and edible flowers; many of which are rare and hard to find locally. The farm also grows a wide variety of fruits including plums, pluots, nectarines, apricots, apples, figs, peaches, guavas, avocados (Haas, Fuerte and Reed), olives, pomegranates, persimmons, strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and ten different types of citrus. The remaining areas consist of drought-tolerant sweeps of rosemary, lavender, rockrose, and sage all of which attract butterflies and dueling hummingbirds. Photo Credit: Laura Hull Photography. In Southern California there are pockets of darling cottages built in the early 20th century that we like to call jewelry boxes. They are quaint, full of charm and usually a bit cramped. Our clients have a growing family and needed a modern, functional home. They opted for a renovation that directly addressed their concerns. When we first saw this 2,170 square-foot 3-bedroom beach cottage, the front door opened directly into a staircase and a dead-end hallway. The kitchen was cramped, the living room was claustrophobic and everything felt dark and dated. The big picture items included pitching the living room ceiling to create space and taking down a kitchen wall. We added a French oven and luxury range that the wife had always dreamed about, a custom vent hood, and custom-paneled appliances. We added a downstairs half-bath for guests (entirely designed around its whimsical wallpaper) and converted one of the existing bathrooms into a Jack-and-Jill, connecting the kids’ bedrooms, with double sinks and a closed-off toilet and shower for privacy. In the bathrooms, we added white marble floors and wainscoting. We created storage throughout the home with custom-cabinets, new closets and built-ins, such as bookcases, desks and shelving. White Sands Design/Build furnished the entire cottage mostly with commissioned pieces, including a custom dining table and upholstered chairs. We updated light fixtures and added brass hardware throughout, to create a vintage, bo-ho vibe. The best thing about this cottage is the charming backyard accessory dwelling unit (ADU), designed in the same style as the larger structure. In order to keep the ADU it was necessary to renovate less than 50% of the main home, which took some serious strategy, otherwise the non-conforming ADU would need to be torn out. We renovated the bathroom with white walls and pine flooring, transforming it into a get-away that will grow with the girls.

Designed to complement the main residence, the new Detached Accessory Dwelling Unit (DADU) opens onto a beautifully crafted shared patio that encourages outdoor living and connection. Large windows and a glass entry door fill the interior with natural light while creating a seamless transition between indoors and out. Durable concrete pavers, thoughtfully placed landscaping, and café lighting transform the courtyard into an inviting extension of both homes—perfect for relaxing, entertaining, or enjoying quiet moments in a private urban setting. The cohesive architectural detailing and carefully selected materials ensure the DADU feels like a natural continuation of the property's overall design.

Our clients had a kitchen that suffered from a lack of natural light, little connection to the dining and entertaining space, and many storage problems. With brand-new cabinetry, one less wall and more durable finishes, we were able to give them the kitchen they've always wanted.
