Eichler in Marinwood - At the larger scale of the property existed a desire to soften and deepen the engagement between the house and the street frontage. As such, the landscaping palette consists of textures chosen for subtlety and granularity. Spaces are layered by way of planting, diaphanous fencing and lighting. The interior engages the front of the house by the insertion of a floor to ceiling glazing at the dining room. Jog-in path from street to house maintains a sense of privacy and sequential unveiling of interior/private spaces. In Southern California there are pockets of darling cottages built in the early 20th century that we like to call jewelry boxes. They are quaint, full of charm and usually a bit cramped. Our clients have a growing family and needed a modern, functional home. They opted for a renovation that directly addressed their concerns. When we first saw this 2,170 square-foot 3-bedroom beach cottage, the front door opened directly into a staircase and a dead-end hallway. The kitchen was cramped, the living room was claustrophobic and everything felt dark and dated. The big picture items included pitching the living room ceiling to create space and taking down a kitchen wall. We added a French oven and luxury range that the wife had always dreamed about, a custom vent hood, and custom-paneled appliances. We added a downstairs half-bath for guests (entirely designed around its whimsical wallpaper) and converted one of the existing bathrooms into a Jack-and-Jill, connecting the kids’ bedrooms, with double sinks and a closed-off toilet and shower for privacy. In the bathrooms, we added white marble floors and wainscoting. We created storage throughout the home with custom-cabinets, new closets and built-ins, such as bookcases, desks and shelving. White Sands Design/Build furnished the entire cottage mostly with commissioned pieces, including a custom dining table and upholstered chairs. We updated light fixtures and added brass hardware throughout, to create a vintage, bo-ho vibe. The best thing about this cottage is the charming backyard accessory dwelling unit (ADU), designed in the same style as the larger structure. In order to keep the ADU it was necessary to renovate less than 50% of the main home, which took some serious strategy, otherwise the non-conforming ADU would need to be torn out. We renovated the bathroom with white walls and pine flooring, transforming it into a get-away that will grow with the girls.

2011 NARI CAPITAL COTY GRAND AWARD WINNER Having a small 10’ x 12’ kitchen tucked in the back corner of their home wasn’t working for this this young and growing family. Its cramped layout didn’t allow for a breakfast area and storage space was non-existent, both major issues for their busy day-to-day lifestyle. After consulting with Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes, they decided to build a 300 square foot addition onto the back of this 1960’s vintage split level. The planned addition expanded and updated the home’s kitchen via a contemporary design, added plenty of storage and provided a much needed breakfast seating area. More importantly, it created a great place for the family to gather. The new kitchen contains a 48” professional-grade range and a large built-in refrigerator, as well as lots of cabinetry and counter space to meet client’s storage needs. Use of lighter shaker style custom painted cabinetry with honed black counter tops has lightened the space tremendously. A large island with distress black cherry cabinetry ans a mahogany countertop was installed and has become the focal point of the kitchen. By removing a partition that previously separated the kitchen from the dining room, the new design has created a wide open floor plan. The casual dining room flows right into a casual seating area with a corner fireplace. French doors open onto a large new deck. Best of all, the addition lets the family spend time together before, during and after mean preparation. It’s truly become the hearth of the home.

Before photo of the existing Decks. The clients goal is to create a more seamless space without the change of materials everywhere. The brick and decking are going to be removed and replaced with new non slip Porcelain tiles.

This space shows that form and function can exist beautifully in the same space! While guest use the powde room they are non the wiser that the laundry is just steps away. The laundry area side pocket doors, allow the space to be fully accessed when needed and look great when not!

This project began as a design-build proposal to build an addition for an indoor swim spa and exercise room to a ranch style house. The Clients were seeking a functional and inviting space reminiscent of the luxury resorts and space they have visited during their international travels. One of the biggest challenges was to fit the program within the site and buildable area constraints. In order to maximize floor area, the exterior walls of the addition were located parallel to the property lines along the required setbacks, which resulted in a non-orthagonal geometry in plan. The volume of the addition began to take shape with large floor to ceiling openings strengthening the connection to the outdoors with roof line that rises northward to capture daylight. A series of operable skylights ventilate the room and allow more daylight to penetrate into the adjacent existing den. Inspired by modern additions made to historic structures in Europe, we made a conscious decision to not try to blend the addition into the language of the existing ranch house, choosing instead to juxtapose a structure that was layered and felt light next to the cement tile roof and framed picture windows. The interior walls were finished with a marine grade plywood to withstand a humid environment, and the exteriors were clad with a cedar rainscreen to give privacy where needed and gradually reduced to allow for more glass and visibility. The Clients are immersed in the technological environment of Silicon Valley and appreciated the simple geometries and aesthetics of modern design. c david wakely
