Rob Sanders Architects was asked to expand an 1856 CT farmhouse which had numerous additions, and to replace the 1920's garage with a separate but connected three-car garage and guest suite. The new garage structure includes a bedroom and bath for frequent long-term visitors as well as a Potting room for the owner's avid gardening interests. A covered porch overlooks the rear paddock, which is used for tent parties and barn dances. The garage is connected to the house by an arcaded covered breezeway, which angles to allow vehicle circulation between old stone farmwalls. The Breezeway opens to a new entry and Mudroom, which features brick and cherrywood floors. A new hallway is lined with wainscoating with a custom pattern taken from the antique trim of the house, and opens to a new kitchen with multiple workstations. The work island features a massive endgrain butcher block work surface, supported by repurposed sea creature finials the owners found in Asia. The kitchen opens to a remodeled Family Room with fieldstone fireplace. Upstairs, a new Master Bedroom suite extends the gable form of the original farmhouse, and has a roof deck to overlook the rear field. The residence incorporates flooring made from old-growth pine and cherry trees harvested, dried, and milled on site. The turf requires constant monitoring and adjustment to the irrigation system. The trees create a mess requiring clean up along with yearly power washing of the stone. While the challenges are many, the fine maintenance has led to happy clients and numerous referrals.

The program consists of a detached Guest House with full Kitchen, Living and Dining amenities, Carport and Office Building with attached Main house and Master Bedroom wing. The arrangement of buildings was dictated by the numerous majestic oaks and organized as a procession of spaces leading from the Entry arbor up to the front door. Large covered terraces and arbors were used to extend the interior living spaces out onto the site. All the buildings are clad in Texas limestone with accent bands of Leuders limestone to mimic the local limestone cliffs in the area. Steel was used on the arbors and fences and left to rust. Vertical grain Douglas fir was used on the interior while flagstone and stained concrete floors were used throughout. The flagstone floors extend from the exterior entry arbors into the interior of the Main Living space and out onto the Main house terraces.

After the devastating Tubbs fire, Craig reimagined this Calistoga property into a wine country retreat for the owners' family as well as corporate/wellness guests. He approached the design by studying the natural elements of the site including trees, views and light, the vernacular design of the area and the clients’ personality. Craig designed a barn and the house – made up of a one-story and a two-story building – connected by a stunning 20-foot steel and glass breezeway. Expansive doors and windows create seamless indoor/outdoor flow and numerous patios and the pool area provide comfortable outdoor spaces. We have also designed multiple custom furniture pieces, and worked with numerous artisans and craftspeople on specific pieces for the house. Our design retains the character and detail of original house, yet works in furniture pieces and design elements that seamlessly tie together a blend of western and eastern influences. We renovated and/or created following: family room, workroom, laundry room, guest suite, home office, and wine cellar in the basement; living room, dining room, sun room with bar, family room, powder room, kitchen, and breakfast area on the first floor; master suite and three bedrooms and two bathrooms on second floor; home office, and study on third floor; and painting studio, reading room, bathroom, and 3-car garage in carriage house. Both the front and rear of this beautiful South Tampa home are illuminated, as well as the walkways down both sides. A feeling of security is an added bonus of a lighting system installed primarily for accent and beauty. We addressed the architectural features of the home, including adding recessed fixtures in the pavers to illuminate the entryway and second story lighting to showcase the areas over the garage. We also showcased the large oak canopies that flow over the front yard from both sides. The pool perimeter is warmly illuminated with the reflected light off the numerous andonidia palm clusters. The entire project is done in cast brass with LED illumination. Perhaps the most flattering part of this project is having the homeowner call us out numerous times to make additions and adjustments as they improve their home.
