The axis of the house is typical in historic homes. There is a way through the house, usually in two ways as in a cross. Our view here is the "cross" hall, while just ahead is the round terminus of the historic hall. The paneled pilasters in each corner contain a HVAC duct and a service duct (right side). The right panel above the round drawing tube opens for access. See the next image. Custom work offers function and surprises! Jaeger & Ernst cabinetmakers: 434-973-7018

A 200 SF addition to an existing master bedroom, this master bath and closet has created a much needed spa-like retreat to an already beautiful home. The ceramic tile floor resembles a lighter hardwood to match the rest of the home, but offers the resiliency of tile for the wet conditions of the bathroom. A double floating vanity offers plenty of storage, and four skylights and a large window offer enough natural light that artificial lighting is rarely used during the day.
The shower ceramic tile resembles marble, but allows for an easier hard surface to clean and maintain. The brass fixtures allow for a warm contrast to the cool grays, and are a great alternative to the typical stainless steel or brushed aluminum look. The brass also compliments the tile floor, as does the light grey vanity color and the brass color accents in the shower tile and vanity backsplash.
A small passage just before the entrance to the bathroom allows for storage space in the form of two built-in white cabinets on either side. A sliding pocket door with privacy glass provides privacy while transferring natural light from one space to the next.
The overall feel is inviting and peaceful, with a natural charm brought about by the materials and colors chosen to complete this spa-like retreat.

Typical of many bi-level homes built in the 1970's, this house featured a separate kitchen and dining room... both SMALL. The kitchen was dimly lit, with dark oak cabinets, green countertops, and a dated vinyl floor. The wall between the rooms was removed and doorways to the living room were widened. The soffit above the cabinets was also torn out. This brand new space also features hardwood floors and upgraded lighting. Custom Gunstock maple cabinets fit the client's style while offering plenty of storage. Quartz countertops and a light-colored porcelain backsplash add additional light to the room.

The white kitchen with a wood island and wood open shelving offers a timeless and welcoming space that blends classic elegance with a touch of rustic charm.
The kitchen's predominant color is a bright, pristine white. White cabinets, often with shaker-style doors or a clean, minimalist design, line the walls, creating a fresh and open ambiance. The white color scheme conveys cleanliness, purity, and an airy feel, making the kitchen an inviting and well-lit environment.
At the heart of the kitchen, a wooden island takes center stage. The wood surface, typically showcasing its natural grain and warm hues, provides a striking contrast to the white surroundings. The wood island serves as a functional focal point, offering both a durable countertop for cooking and a gathering space for family and friends.
Open wooden shelving units, usually installed on a white or light gray subway tile backsplash, add a touch of rustic character to the space. These shelves display a collection of ceramics, cookware, and decorative items, contributing to the kitchen's personal and cozy atmosphere.
Countertops are often made from natural materials, such as wood, butcher block, or light-colored granite or quartz, harmonizing with the wood island while providing a practical and easy-to-maintain workspace.
The flooring is typically a light-colored hardwood or wood-like tile that complements the wood elements and brightens the room. An area rug under the dining or cooking area adds a cozy touch.
Overhead pendant lights with metal or glass accents illuminate the island and offer both functional lighting and a decorative element. The pendant fixtures can add a subtle touch of industrial or vintage flair to the kitchen's design.
The walls are often painted in a soft, neutral color to maintain a sense of serenity and balance, allowing the wood and white elements to shine. Natural light streams in through large windows, enhancing the bright and airy atmosphere of the room.
The white kitchen with a wood island and wood open shelving is a perfect blend of classic and rustic elements, creating a space that is not only visually pleasing but also functional and welcoming. It's an ideal setting for cooking, entertaining, and enjoying the comforts of home in a timeless and charming environment.
