The owner of this apartment is a graduate student in the field of literature. She had a large book collection for which I mounted a custom shelving system. The headboard is also custom-made and I stained the wood to match that of the bookshelves for a feeling of unity. This bedroom features a large window (not pictured) that lets in a flood of light, allowing the edgy black paint to feel relaxed instead of oppressive. Board and batten on the lower portion of the wall was also a custom job to make the built-in ledges seem more intentional as opposed to an accidental result of the strange in-law floor plan.

This unique Old Hampshire Designs timber frame home has a rustic look with rough-cut beams and tongue and groove ceilings, and is finished with hard wood floors through out. The centerpiece fireplace is of all locally quarried granite, built by local master craftsmen. This project won in the 2013 Builders Association of Metropolitan Pittsburgh Housing Excellence Award for Best Urban Renewal Renovation Project. This 1960 house was in need of updating from both design and performance standpoints, and the project turned into a comprehensive deep energy retrofit, with thorough airtightness and insulation, new space conditioning and energy-recovery-ventilation, triple glazed windows, and an interior of incredible elegance. While we maintained the foundation and overall massing, this is essentially a new house, well equipped for a new generation of use and enjoyment.

The house has always benefitted from the exposed beams and large expanses of glass, however where there was once an overly large and oppressive fireplace distracting you from the finer details, there is now a more compact and cleanly detailed gas fireplace.

The Bedroom features a large space, great for a kids room or for guest room.
