This work is a collaboration between GCSS and Ginny Ruffner. If is composed of hydroformed hand cut and welded steel branch forms paired with hand painted lampworked flowers.

This homage to prairie style architecture located at The Rim Golf Club in Payson, Arizona was designed for owner/builder/landscaper Tom Beck.
This home appears literally fastened to the site by way of both careful design as well as a lichen-loving organic material palatte. Forged from a weathering steel roof (aka Cor-Ten), hand-formed cedar beams, laser cut steel fasteners, and a rugged stacked stone veneer base, this home is the ideal northern Arizona getaway.
Expansive covered terraces offer views of the Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish designed golf course, the largest stand of Ponderosa Pines in the US, as well as the majestic Mogollon Rim and Stewart Mountains, making this an ideal place to beat the heat of the Valley of the Sun.
Designing a personal dwelling for a builder is always an honor for us. Thanks, Tom, for the opportunity to share your vision.

The bedroom's design articulates a serene, minimalist aesthetic with its spacious layout, expansive windows offering panoramic views of the natural surroundings, and a neutral color scheme that complements the outdoor landscape. The rough texture of the concrete wall adds an industrial edge, balanced by the softness of the light wood flooring and the organic forms of the indoor greenery. Art pieces and elegantly simple furniture selection contribute to the room's modern yet timeless appeal.

Illuminating the staircase is a dramatic contemporary chandelier finished in soft gold, creating an elegant focal point that enhances the home’s vertical architecture. Its sculptural form evokes the impression of a blooming flower, with delicate white petal-like elements extending outward to provide integrated LED illumination. The fixture introduces both artistry and softness, balancing the strong architectural lines with an organic, luminous presence.

This project involved a significant remodel of an existing residence, with extensive updates to the landscape. The entry features a pathway with subtle, organic forms, emphasizing the view. On the side, there is a modern potager with raised steel beds, a contemporary potting shed, and a deck with a well-planned path system. The backyard includes a pool, hot tub, patio with surrounding seating area, firepit and dedicated seating, covered outdoor kitchen and dining space, sport court, and tree house. Additionally, the landscape is enhanced with comprehensive fencing, native and drought-tolerant plantings, and a pollinator habitat. The result is a harmonious blend of modern design and functional outdoor living spaces.

Although the site, orientation, and landscape always influence our new home designs, the natural surroundings of our Wind & Water Project define its organic, modernist form. Located on a bluff overlooking the Chagrin River, the wind blowing through the long grass sparked a floor plan consisting of a series of curving walls, which define different zones of living and ultimately open to the incredible valley views. An undulating roof structure over each space slopes from northern clerestory windows, creating a gentle wave pattern evident throughout the interior ceilings. This motion of water references not only the river below, but the movement of water that has shaped the topography of Northeastern Ohio’s scenic river valleys over millennia. Outside, a playful Casita overlooks the infinity pool and its long river valley views.
