This year’s Designer Showhouse was another great opportunity to give back to our Montecito community while showcasing our work as a fully integrated interior design studio. This time around, we participated in the first Home & Garden Designer Showcase by creating the lounge, bar area, and powder room of a nearly 6,000 square foot home in the neighborhood. The beautiful MARIA LAURA table from our SORELLA furniture line provides a joyful centerpiece to the seating area and shows how flexible and outside-the-box our furniture designs can be. The distinct piano bench, also one of our designs, gives the space a sophisticated touch, and pillows from our MB Home Collection provide a perfect complement to the plush chairs. Products making their television debut in this project were Anthology Woods Northwest Blend (a naturally weathered wood installed on a section of the ceiling, unfinished) and the extremely hard & durable Left Coast White Oak, a unique species growing only in a narrow strip of Oregon and bit in California & Washington (installed for the flooring, finished with Rubio Monocoat White natural oil). The homeowners were able to easily apply the finish themselves prior to installing the floor, and the zero VOC nature of the oil insured it was safe to move right in! The White tint to the oil gives a subtle white-washed look to the floors while maintaining a natural look and a supple feel underfoot. The couple participating in the episode loved their floor so much they decided to add more, installing it in their master bedroom, as well! The rich character of this natural Oak in a flat sawn (the old "European" way to cut Oak) wood product adds a timeless element & warmth to the feel of the space. Looking closely at the grain, you'll see cathedral patterns in many boards, along with a great mix of flat grain with rift areas as well. Finishing out the details of the room, the Bath Crashers team added natural carerra marble in the shower with tones of white & gray, and apron-front vanity sinks for extra charm.

Participant in 2018 Saratoga Showcase of Homes This picture-perfect kitchen is a sum of all its meticulously designed and crafted details. The layers of complexity are so seamlessly integrated that the finished result does not overwhelm but rather invites you to linger and savor. The mix of paint finishes, quartz, marble and walnut tops, x-mullion doors and satin brass pulls and knobs all contribute to a layering of textures and color. The stiles of the base cabinets are extended to create furniture pieces in keeping with an old farmhouse but with a distinctly modern twist. Each year, a house in the Pasadena area is selected and transformed into a showpiece by some of the leading interior designers in Los Angeles. The house selected for the 2014 Showcase is known as the Flint House and was originally built for Robert Flint and his wife Margaret Grey Flint in 1915, in the English Arts and Crafts style. Designs of the Interior was selected to design the Master Suite Wing and teamed up with Walker Zanger to remodel the master bath. Due to the historical aspect of this landmark, major construction was limited and the designers were barred from removing historical pieces, like windows and fireplaces. The designers selected a color palette of grays, taupe, cream and peacock. Sleek fixtures graced the freestanding oval bath tub, while nickel finishes adorn the shower and sink. Walker Zanger’s Tangent Collection, which consists of decorative marble and limestone mosaics, lined the floors and the shower and bath walls. The floor contains a starburst mosaic pattern made out of Calacatta marble and Flannel and Ash Grey limestones. The shower fixtures were highlighted by a strip of Café Bruno marble tiles and surrounded by a teardrop mosaic pattern in Calacatta. Inspired by a blend of abstract geometrical shapes and mid-century modern design, Designs of the Interior considered Walker Zanger’s Tangent Collection the perfect choice for transforming this master bath into a magnificent show piece that complements the home’s original architecture.

The project is a major collaboration between the landscape architect and architect, both of whom will participate in the Dialogue. The landscape is just over an acre, and its design is based on centerlines and relationships of the architecture. The arrival is marked by a sweeping walkway that runs along the edge of a grand central lawn and stately groves of pond cypress trees frame the house on both sides. At the rear of the home an open courtyard holds an elaborate swimming pool complete with fountain, infinity weir and shallow water ledge. An adjacent fire pit is surrounded by four live oak trees. The pool and fire pit area were designed based upon the centerline of the master bedroom. At the basement area the lower courtyard centers on the large library windows. Here lacey Japanese maple trees set in large pots provide a delicate canopy. To the east a veranda overlooks a small lawn area backed by pre-existing woodland and a creek bed enhanced by new native plantings.
