The home had a three-level deck on the back of the house which was falling apart and from which there was no access via the kitchen or breakfast area. Additionally, water run-off was washing a large amount of dirt against the lower level basement door because there was little in terms of landscaping in place. The homeowners wanted to entertain in the backyard and have a good flow from the family room and kitchen onto the back patio. To help them achieve their goals, they hired Michael Nash Design, Build & Homes as their contractor. The first step in the renovation was to remove the entire back deck. Next, they designed and built an 18’x 45’ concrete foundation and slab; designed and built a tall retaining wall coved with flagstone to support the upper level patio; and installed a new patio with flagstone and brick pavers. The new patio level only requires two short steps to get inside of the house. A new set of French doors with sidelights replaces the old breakfast room window to improve the traffic pattern. A new set of French doors with ½ arched transom and two side windows connects the new gourmet kitchen to the back patio. The kitchen offers professional-grade stainless steel appliances, hard wood floors, granite countertops with a tile backsplash and beautiful custom cabinetry. A large center island is the focal point of the room and the gathering spot in this new space.

Bringing the indoors out with this Air plant designed shower by Brandon Pruett. This is an extremely low maintenance since the shower will hydrate the air plants so no need to water them.

Vienna Addition Skill Construction & Design, LLC, Design/Build a two-story addition to include remodeling the kitchen and connecting to the adjoining rooms, creating a great room for this family of four. After removing the side office and back patio, it was replaced with a great room connected to the newly renovated kitchen with an eating area that doubles as a homework area for the children. There was plenty of space left over for a walk-in pantry, powder room, and office/craft room. The second story design was for an Adult’s Only oasis; this was designed for the parents to have a permitted Staycation. This space includes a Grand Master bedroom with three walk-in closets, and a sitting area, with plenty of room for a king size bed. This room was not been completed until we brought the outdoors in; this was created with the three big picture windows allowing the parents to look out at their Zen Patio. The Master Bathroom includes a double size jet tub, his & her walk-in shower, and his & her double vanity with plenty of storage and two hideaway hampers. The exterior was created to bring a modern craftsman style feel, these rich architectural details are displayed around the windows with simple geometric lines and symmetry throughout. Craftsman style is an extension of its natural surroundings. This addition is a reflection of indigenous wood and stone sturdy, defined structure with clean yet prominent lines and exterior details, while utilizing low-maintenance, high-performance materials. We love the artisan style of intricate details and the use of natural materials of this Vienna, VA addition. We especially loved working with the family to Design & Build a space that meets their family’s needs as they grow.

This space defines the hub of the garden, I placed it in the corner so it is central to the ADU and the dining area/access from the house. The BBQ is now part of the social space. The raised planter and walls all are functions of design but also reflect my solution for the many grading levels on the neighboring perimeter spaces as well as grading within the former space and act to create floating bench and BBQ moments I programmed in. The concrete plinth is for extra seating/food or plant displays.

Twenty-four-foot windows span the back of the living room, breaking the bounds between indoors and out. "Rain storms are very exciting in our home", says Bobbie. "The diamond roof line creates waterfalls during a downpour, and the glass wall in our living room provides the perfect theater in which to watch them." Cove lighting runs all throughout the house. Constructed out of fluorescent tubing, wood, and milky plexi-glass, Stein strategically placed them to highlight doorways, windows and walls. The cocktail table was inherited from Matthew's grandmother. Much like a shadow box, the couple uses the table to display mementos and post cards from their travels together.
