On the exterior, the desire was to weave the home into the fabric of the community, all while paying special attention to meld the footprint of the house into a workable clean, open, and spacious interior free of clutter and saturated in natural light to meet the owner’s simple but yet tasteful lifestyle. The utilization of natural light all while bringing nature’s canvas into the spaces provides a sense of harmony. Light, shadow and texture bathe each space creating atmosphere, always changing, and blurring the boundaries between the indoor and outdoor space. Color abounds as nature paints the walls. Though they are all white hues of the spectrum, the natural light saturates and glows, all while being reflected off of the beautiful forms and surfaces. Total emersion of the senses engulf the user, greeting them with an ever changing environment. Style gives way to natural beauty and the home is neither of the past or future, rather it lives in the moment. Stable, grounded and unpretentious the home is understated yet powerful. The environment encourages exploration and an awakening of inner being dispelling convention and accepted norms. The home encourages mediation embracing principals associated with silent illumination. If there was one factor above all that guided the design it would be found in a word, truth. Having a place to pay bills and relax was important to the homeowner so we made sure this office performed double duty. The desk was her husbands desk and a treasure to her, the chair and ottoman came from the family room, the etagere was from her dining room and filled with her collections, and the rug had once been part of her family foyer.

We renovated the exterior and installed the hardscaping of the traditional colonial home in Villanova, PA. The flagstone patio has a beautiful hand-crafted pergola made from reclaimed long leaf pine. The outdoor fireplace was constructed out of mica and granite and has two storage areas for wood. The stone retaining wall includes interior lighting. A short walk down an adjoining staircase brings you to a courtyard immediately outside of the basement. The courtyard features the same flagstone, stone retaining wall and interior lighting. Regarding the house itself, we rebuilt the chimney (and the accompanying fireplace inside), added Harding plank cement siding, and built the retaining wall along the driveway. Addition off the side of a typical mid-century post-WWII colonial, including master suite with master bath expansion, first floor family room addition, a complete basement remodel with the addition of new bedroom suite for an AuPair. The clients realized it was more cost effective to do an addition over paying for outside child care for their growing family. Additionally, we helped the clients address some serious drainage issues that were causing settling issues in the home.

Dakin has been working with the owners of this site realize their dream of cultivating a rich and meaningful landscape around their home. Because of their deep engagement with their land and garden, the landscape has guided the entire design process, from architecture to civil engineering to landscape design. All architecture on site is oriented toward the garden, a park-like, multi-use environment that includes a walking labyrinth, restored prairie, a Japanese garden, an orchard, vegetable beds, berry brambles, a croquet lawn and a charred wood outdoor shower. Dakin pays special attention to materials at every turn, selecting an antique sugar bowl for the outdoor fire pit, antique Japanese roof tiles to create blue edging, and stepping stones imported from India. In addition to its diversity of garden types, this permacultural paradise is home to chickens, ducks, and bees. A complex irrigation system was designed to draw alternately from wells and cisterns. 3x5lion.png Dakin has also had the privilege of creating an arboretum of diverse and rare trees that she based on Olmsted’s design for Central Park. Trees were selected to display a variety of seasonally shifting delights: spring blooms, fall berries, winter branch structure. Mature trees onsite were preserved and sometimes moved to new locations.

This farmhouse style home was already lovely and inviting. We just added some finishing touches in the kitchen and expanded and enhanced the basement. In the kitchen we enlarged the center island so that it is now five-feet-wide. We rebuilt the sides, added the cross-back, “x”, design to each end and installed new fixtures. We also installed new counters and painted all the cabinetry. Already the center of the home’s everyday living and entertaining, there’s now even more space for gathering. We expanded the already finished basement to include a main room with kitchenet, a multi-purpose/guestroom with a murphy bed, full bathroom, and a home theatre. The COREtec vinyl flooring is waterproof and strong enough to take the beating of everyday use. In the main room, the ship lap walls and farmhouse lantern lighting coordinates beautifully with the vintage farmhouse tuxedo bathroom. Who needs to go out to the movies with a home theatre like this one? With tiered seating for six, featuring reclining chair on platforms, tray ceiling lighting and theatre sconces, this is the perfect spot for family movie night! Design ideas for a mid-sized traditional full sun backyard water fountain landscape in Detroit for summer.

This house was built in 1899, the oldest on the block, and once the Rugby School for Boys. The goal was to blend the owner’s formal taste with comfortable functionality for a family with three small children. The result is a space that combines color and pattern and just the right amount of modern while paying homage to the home’s history. We incorporated new designs, family heirlooms, antiques and refinished furniture to create a space that looks collected over time, rather than furnished from scratch over the course of a year.

This is a beautiful custom pool, spa, backyard project in Upland. The arbor covers the built in BBQ and is designed to coordinate with the house. The built in BBQ also has a large bar area for high top seating in the shade. Travertine decking covers most of the ground up around the pool and there are beautiful accent pots and landscaping. Custom wrought iron fencing provides a barrier between the pool area and drop off to the lower part of the yard. The pool features a raised round spa with cascading tiered stone spillway into the pool. The rectangular pool has a negative edge at the end with manufactured boulders and two deck jets. A pebble tech finished plaster gives the pool the dark blue color and we used poured in place concrete coping. We used Hayward Pool Products in this pool, including the EcoStar® Pump and the ColorLogic® LED Lights! We pay attention to details! This elegant backyard is perfect for entertaining.

This subtle sensibility defines the project. While evident in each detail, from the cabinetry to the fireplace surround, there were a few special elements. Starting in the gallery, we built a life size, playable tic- tac- toe board. This was achieved by using felt wrapped metal panels and CNC cut X’s and O’s imbedded with rare earth magnets. This ‘board’ was the outcome of what to do with the space below the I –beams. Originally rusted and flaking with a great patina, we were required to fire proof these beams if they were to remain exposed. This meant applying a fire proof, or intumescent paint, which covered the very elements that made the feature so appealing. This is where Willem Racke stepped in. In not more than a couple days, they recreated the patina and nuance that inspired the deviation. Another unique aspect of the project which pays homage to the building was executed by Maidenstone. Together with C.H. Burnham Inc., we searched America for a lot that matched the fabrication process and color of the original brick façade. Jana and Geof ended up discovering the match. Visible in some of the earlier photographs, this required more than a simple brick installation. As you can see, they taped off each individual brick to craft the look. Using a piping bag much like your favorite pastry chef, they installed the grout and then proceeded to carve and age it to match the original.

This 200 square foot patio sits directly on top of the wine cellar in the next project album. Made using the Bison system, these terra cotta tiles are elevated on posts to allow for drainage underneath.
