Une oliveraie argentée existante, caressée par le vent, sert de toile de fond pour un chemin ondulant avec les lavandes. Une promenade d'après-midi pendant un jour chaud d'été dévoile aisément l'intensité du parfum de la lavande transcendée. Les bordures ondoyantes, contenant, entre autres, gaura, oreille de lapin et sédum, donnent l'impression de mouvement sans effort et entrelacent le paysage endémique. En ponctuant l'espace, de remarquables arbres approfondissent une connexion avec la terre du pays.

The owners were downsizing from a large ornate property down the street and were seeking a number of goals. Single story living, modern and open floor plan, comfortable working kitchen, spaces to house their collection of artwork, low maintenance and a strong connection between the interior and the landscape. Working with a long narrow lot adjacent to conservation land, the main living space (16 foot ceiling height at its peak) opens with folding glass doors to a large screen porch that looks out on a courtyard and the adjacent wooded landscape. This gives the home the perception that it is on a much larger lot and provides a great deal of privacy. The transition from the entry to the core of the home provides a natural gallery in which to display artwork and sculpture. Artificial light almost never needs to be turned on during daytime hours and the substantial peaked roof over the main living space is oriented to allow for solar panels not visible from the street or yard.

GARRISON 1-51 The Garrison is a sculptural iron casting intended for use a stool or side table. It recycles steel salvaged from the 2015 demolition of the namesake Garrison bridge near Toronto’s Fort York. True to STACKLAB’s ethos, however, the Garrison’s shape is not intended to be a formal representation or memorialization of any of the bridge’s attributes. Instead, the Garrison exemplifies STACKLAB’s mission to emphasize that all material matters. Discarded or waste materials are repurposed in a way that imbues them with new life and meaning. Its form was derived using digital real-time parametric design and fabrication technology. STACKLAB optimized the product to be as light and strong as possible: the Garrison’s 35-lb. weight can support a load of 900 lbs. STACKLAB and its partnering firm Rebart procured two tons of bridge rebar, enough to release a limited-edition run of 102 units. STACKLAB designed the Garrison to be sand-cast and engineered the pattern (used to generate sand moulds) so that small manufacturing defects, typical of this process, would only appear at the tip of the piece. Units 1 to 51 have a thermally applied 1/16” solid bronze coating in this location, which ameliorates these defects. This coating turns units that may have been discarded into premium ones, enabling a near-100-percent yield out of the run. The sand-casting process produces faintly perceptible irregularities that enhance the Garrison’s tactility. Garrison 1-51 is available exclusively at Maison Gerard. REGIONAL + URBAN DESIGN: Certificate of Merit PROJECT: McKees Rocks Chartiers Avenue Streetscape CLIENT: McKees Rocks CDC ARCHITECTURE FIRM: LGA Partners, LP ENGINEERS: Keystone Structural Engineers; Trans Associates DESCRIPTION: The original Urban Renewal Plan for McKees Rocks in the 1970s prioritized the automobile over the pedestrian, resulting in the disengagement between the pedestrian and the downtown district. This new streetscape plan for the district deemphasizes the automobile traffic, giving a more balanced approach to multiple modes of transportation, returning two-way traffic to the main thoroughfare, narrowing streets, and widening sidewalks where possible. JURY COMMENTS: The opportunity for the same team to revisit their own project 40 years later is rare and this solution shows how the goals, perceptions, and expectations of society change. The current response is well researched and intended to be realized with meticulous detail at the pedestrian scale. This project seems to place a high level of focus on the basic precepts of urban design that are user-based and that will have a tangible effect with an already existing space that needs some reinvigoration as it has matured.

Our MOSS customers wanted to update both their main level powder room as well as their upstairs hallway bathrooms in their Alexandria home. Both were original to the home and had design flaws that impeded their functionality – in addition, both, aesthetically, were outdated and desperately needed a fresh look. The homeowners knew that the powder room would have to maintain its original (small) square footage, however, they were hoping to be able to use the space more effectively and efficiently. Replacing the pedestal sink with a cabinet that would allow storage was a key first step and adding board and batten to the walls completely changed the perception of the room’s size. Add in new paint colors and fixtures and the space looks brand new! The upstairs bathroom, used by the homeowners’ children and guests, was from a bygone era of design, with salmon pink colored tiles on the shower/tub walls. In addition, the tub wasn’t the full length of the bathroom and was instead blocked in with additional tiling to create an unnecessary large shelf/seating area at one end. Replacing the tile on the walls and the floor with more beautiful, neutral grey and white marble tile immediately updated the space, and the new cabinet, vanity, mirrors, and lighting all contributed to creating the bathroom that better suits our customers' needs. Bonus: the new bathtub fits appropriately and makes much more sense to the room!
