The owners were downsizing from a large ornate property down the street and were seeking a number of goals. Single story living, modern and open floor plan, comfortable working kitchen, spaces to house their collection of artwork, low maintenance and a strong connection between the interior and the landscape. Working with a long narrow lot adjacent to conservation land, the main living space (16 foot ceiling height at its peak) opens with folding glass doors to a large screen porch that looks out on a courtyard and the adjacent wooded landscape. This gives the home the perception that it is on a much larger lot and provides a great deal of privacy. The transition from the entry to the core of the home provides a natural gallery in which to display artwork and sculpture. Artificial light almost never needs to be turned on during daytime hours and the substantial peaked roof over the main living space is oriented to allow for solar panels not visible from the street or yard.

You might think that a 600sf apartment would feel cramped but this space proves that good design can alter perception. I made this space appear larger by using a coordinated palette and repeating materials like the pre-finished Oak floors and custom walnut cabinetry at windows and kitchen. The window cabinets hold a surprising amount of storage, hide the HVAC unit, and highlight expansive Southern-facing views. It also has a huge amount of closet space thanks to 5 closets including a new walk-in. Yet, the living space is large enough for a comfortable seating arrangement and dining for four. A new door-less partition provides an informal bedroom area as well as the perfect place to hang wall-mounted flat-screen tvs on both sides. Original artwork, a redesigned bathroom enlarged by annexing a hallway, and beautiful furnishings (new & vintage) help to create a comfortable, spacious home for a favorite client.

The bathroom is warm in reception thanks to the natural materials of beige stone tiles and stoneware tiles imitating wood. Black accessories add contrast to the interior. The second bathroom is monochromatic and minimalist. It combines black and white. The beautiful tiles of the Italian brand IMOLA Ceramica give a unique character. The interesting pattern of the tiles created a perfect decor for the walls. The layout of the bathroom has changed compared to the existing one. According to the investors' wishes, the bathroom has a comfortable bathtub with a shower. The whole is fresh in perception, unique and undoubtedly timeless.

Designing with the Golden Rectangle based on the Fibonacci numbers, where the width is 62% of its height is the pleasing proportion that all objects in the universe, including the DNA module, are based. The cabinets or their combinations in this composition are either golden rectangles or squares. Their specific size and placement creates the focal point above the open shelf which is confirmed by the crossing of the diagonal lines. Based on our perception and use of the golden proportion, the sink backsplash is 7” of granite, 11” painted. Similarly, the same dimensions as a stair riser and tread. In a high ceiling making only one cabinet taller and deeper alludes to the space without being overwhelming. Form is in the cherry cabinets and granite counter tops. Function includes the dog bowl.

Although this home features beautiful 16′ crown molded ceilings that open up the rooms and give it a feeling of grandeur, the high ceilings posed a few design challenges. In particular, with so much vertical space to fill, the high ceilings can make rooms appear much larger and spacious than they are, so the trick is to play with that perception. Our design team was up to task and did not disappoint. They welcomed the opportunity to create functional improvements to the home that kept in consideration scale and proportion. In the home office, we designed a transom window above the glass doors in the newly formed office wall. And, in the kitchen, we added a decorative beam that spanned the width of the room below the height of the ceiling—a height between the living room windows and the transom windows.
