A lot of homes built in the early 1900s in Portland have been remodeled beyond recognition. The trim has been painted, the floors replaced and the built-ins just didn't make it through years of wear and tear. That's not the case with this home in the Ladd's Addition neighborhood of Portland. Built in 1911, the dark trim remained unpainted, the fir floors still intact and the built-ins in the dining room were in almost perfect condition but the home was dark, empty and didn't function for the owners. Contrary to all my other thoughts in design to lighten a home, we embraced the dark. The trim and floors were sanded and refinished to their original state. In the entry, the walls were painted black. After multiple meetings and conversations with the client where nothing out there seemed quite right, I developed along with artist, Michael Paulus, a custom flower that fit the owner's personality and style down to the scale and exact color palette. This became the inspiration and guiding color scheme to create a glamorous but livable home that was neutral and rich in texture. When my client purchased his circa 1980s home several years ago, it came with a bland, dated guest bathroom. He was eager to swap his brass accented shower doors, counter "bridge" spanning the toilet, wall-to-wall mirror, and terra cotta tiled floor for a sleeker, more contemporary looking space. We gutted the entire space except for the tub which was in perfect condition and replaced the boring, square beige tiles with large format tiles of a subtle, threaded pattern. A decorative, highly textured band of stainless steel, stone, and glass runs through the shower and defines the counter of the new dark vanity which is now in scale with the room. New sconces in matte opal glass are twined with ribbons of forged iron. Walls are in a chic hue called Thunder Grey. The modern sink hardware features a chrome trough spout and stylized square handles. The counter top, with its soft grey and blue-green clouds, is fabricated from a single piece of Sea Pearl quartzite. The shower edges and niche are lined in a polished chrome detail for a clean, minimalist look. And finally, the shower hardware with a bar and hand held shower head echoes the modernist approach to the space. Photo by Bernardo Grijalva

Home design - modern home design idea in Providence

I choose this fun black and white snow leopard paper and coordinating fabric which is perfect for a bathroom because it's indoor/outdoor. Painted the cabinets and refreshed all of the trim to compliment the beautiful existing tile which is in perfect condition. Some things don't need to change!

An already gorgeous mid-century modern home gave a great base for starting this stunning project. The old lanai was in perfect condition with its screened in room and terrazzo floors. But, St. Louis being what it is, the room wasn’t getting as much use as it could. The homeowners had an idea to remove the interior walls that separated the main home and the lanai to create additional living space when they entertain or have a movie night as family. The exterior screens were taken out and replaced with new windows and screens to update the look and protect the room from outdoor elements. The old skylights were removed and replaced with 7 new skylights with solar shades to let the light in or block the suns warmth come summers’ heat. The interior doorways and walls were removed and replaced with structural beams and supports so that we could leave the space as open and airy as possible. Keeping the original flooring in both rooms we were able to insert new wood to seamlessly match the old in the spaces where walls once stood. The highlight of this home is the fireplace. We took a single fireplace and created a double-sided gas fireplace. Now the family can enjoy a warm fire from both sides of the house. .

Iron Faux Window Inserts The customer for this project ordered and was shipped 5 Iron Doors and 4 window inserts for the construction of his new home.
