Our client purchased this small bungalow a few years ago in a mature and popular area of Edmonton with plans to update it in stages. First came the exterior facade and landscaping which really improved the curb appeal. Next came plans for a major kitchen renovation and a full development of the basement. That's where we came in. Our designer worked with the client to create bright and colorful spaces that reflected her personality. The kitchen was gutted and opened up to the dining room, and we finished tearing out the basement to start from a blank state. A beautiful bright kitchen was created and the basement development included a new flex room, a crafts room, a large family room with custom bar, a new bathroom with walk-in shower, and a laundry room. The stairwell to the basement was also re-done with a new wood-metal railing. New flooring and paint of course was included in the entire renovation. So bright and lively! Joanne Bechhoff This was a complete bathroom makeover. The bathroom was completely gutted to the studs. The antiquated tub, sink and toilet were all removed. The dated pink tile, the sheetrock and window were also removed. All walls were inspected for damage, fresh insulation, new wiring, new rough plumbing, sheetrock and spackle were all installed. The finishing touches were then all selected. A new modern look with a very traditional feel was accomplished with neutral ceramic tile throughout, a beautiful new vanity and a matching recessed medicine chest, a contrasting granite countertop with an undercount sink, timeless polished chrome faucets, a more eco-friendly toilet, a coordinating light fixture and a light colored paint. A large glass block window was installed to give abundant light to the space while maintaining privacy.

The material mix too makes the ensemble all the more exciting: structured genuine wood meets velvety matt lacquer, the warm tone of the wood meets the cooler air of the carbon grey – a skilful combination of contrasts, also essential in the new planning concept.

Our clients built their Manhattan dream house years ago, but a couple of decades in, the yellow and green palette seemed stale. We brightened the home with new paint and countertops, white oak flooring and updated carpet, custom fixtures and furniture, and new finishes, window treatments, and accessories. For enhanced functionality, we added built-in storage throughout, reupholstered existing furniture and the breakfast nook in performance fabric, and created a custom dining table that seats a dozen. To keep the dining room coastal and informal, we paired plush head chairs with rattan-backed side chairs and accented with sea-foam and sandy-hued floor and window coverings. The addition of a murphy bed, as well as shelving and file storage, made the office more suited to their growing family’s needs. In the second office, a standing desk, as well as a customized craft desk with built-ins for specific supplies, transformed the area into a completely personalized and effective space. New furniture and a ceiling-length fireplace facade of soft ivory and gray stone transformed the family room into a cozy and welcoming retreat. The overall effect is a home that feels spacious, beachy, and comfortable.

With a teen, preteen and a toddler it was well understood that this family would be growing, in many different ways, for years to come. A great way to plan for the future is to build in adaptability. This meant multi-use rooms, nooks and convertible flex spaces. Some of the flex features wee rooms with closets and other additional storage that could be used for personal or family effects. This included additions to the den, craft room and lots of spaces in-between. Two dining areas allow for added entertaining, either formal or informal. Believe it or not, this award-winning home began as a speculative project. Typically speculative projects involve a rather generic design that would appeal to many in a style that might be loved by the masses. But the project’s developer loved modern architecture and his personal residence was the first project designed by architect C.P. Drewett when Drewett Works launched in 2001. Together, the architect and developer envisioned a fictitious art collector who would one day purchase this stunning piece of desert modern architecture to showcase their magnificent collection. The primary views from the site were southwest. Therefore, protecting the interior spaces from the southwest sun while making the primary views available was the greatest challenge. The views were very calculated and carefully managed. Every room needed to not only capture the vistas of the surrounding desert, but also provide viewing spaces for the potential collection to be housed within its walls. The core of the material palette is utilitarian including exposed masonry and locally quarried cantera stone. An organic nature was added to the project through millwork selections including walnut and red gum veneers. The eventual owners saw immediately that this could indeed become a home for them as well as their magnificent collection, of which pieces are loaned out to museums around the world. Their decision to purchase the home was based on the dimensions of one particular wall in the dining room which was EXACTLY large enough for one particular painting not yet displayed due to its size. Inspiration for a large coastal master double-sink freestanding bathtub remodel with granite countertops and white countertops
