Often times some of the best features cannot be seen or captured on film. That is the case with this indoor water adventure. At Shehan Luxury Pools we know that some like to swim for exercise and others like to swim for pleasure - why not offer both? Hidden just to the right of the beach entry is a "Shehan" solution: A powerful commercial Swim-Jet. The purpose of the Swim-Jet is to provide a strong endless current of water. The result is an infinite swimming distance and duration in a location where space is limited. Problem solved!
Now for pleasure and fun. Hidden by design, this pool sports a fast-glide, contoured free-form speed slide. The more adventurous guests board the slide from a set of simulated rock stairs located to the left of the waterfall area. After climbing fourteen feet in elevation, riders will launch themselves down a tube of pure exhilaration. Seconds later, the swimmers are saturated with hundreds of gallons of water carrying them quickly back to the tropical lagoon where they first began; and then do it all over again. If your goals are physical fitness, aesthetics, or family pleasure, the professionals at Shehan Luxury Pools will exceed your expectation.

**Spatial Composition & Architectural Volume**
This is an exercise in the architecture of the alcove — a vanity niche carved from a continuous run of full-height oak joinery, its recess reading less as furniture placed against a wall than as volume subtracted from mass. The composition is governed by a strict orthogonal discipline: the reveal-jointed cabinet stiles establish a vertical rhythm that the photographer's oblique sightline compresses into layered planes, while the cantilevered vanity slab introduces a single decisive horizontal that arrests the vertical drift. The niche is capped by a soffited overhead panel, giving the recess a deliberate lintel and lending the aperture the proportional gravitas of a doorway. Depth is orchestrated through nested framing: the pocketed sliding door in the foreground crops the scene, the joinery reveal frames the alcove, and the full-height mirror frames a reflected secondary volume — a window, a Roman shade, a second bloom — extending the room's apparent envelope well beyond its physical bounds. To the right, the plane pivots into a marble-clad wall and a deeply reveal-set casement whose broad oak jamb and stool are detailed with the same tectonic logic as the millwork, unifying opening and cabinetry into a single architectural grammar. Above, a recessed perimeter shadow-gap ceiling floats the plaster plane free of the wall, dematerializing the junction and heightening the sense of contained, cabin-like intimacy.
**Materiality, Color & Texture**
The palette is narrow, warm, and rigorously controlled — a study in tonal adjacency rather than contrast. Rift-sawn white oak dominates, its cathedral and straight-grain figure deliberately book-matched and run vertically to accentuate height, finished in a matte, low-sheen sealer that reads as raw yet refined; note the subtle chromatic modulation between the honeyed door leaves, the slightly cooler carcass panels, and the pale, almost bleached drawer fronts, a gradient that provides articulation without resorting to hue shift. Against this, the Calacatta- or Carrara-type marble wainscot introduces a cool, silvery counterpoint, its soft grey veining offering the only real graphic incident in the field. The mirror surround — a hand-cast, rope-twist metal frame in polished nickel or silvered bronze — supplies a jewel-like glint and a moment of organic, almost baroque relief against the sobriety of the flat panels, echoed in the pair of églomisé or reverse-painted glass insets set flush into the alcove wall like recessed cabochons. Textiles are handled with restraint: a raw-silk or textured linen Roman shade in a tobacco-taupe stacks in generous, softly rumpled folds, while the swivel chair is upholstered in a taut, sueded greige leather whose sculpted, scrolled back offers the room's most sensuous curve. The tan saddle-leather tray and the milk-glazed ceramic bud vase complete a haptic register that moves from cool stone to warm hide to matte ceramic to silken wood.
**Lighting, Atmosphere & Style Profile**
Illumination is almost entirely daylit and side-cast, with the diffused southern wash filtered through the linen shade to produce a luminous, shadowless bloom across the marble and a raking, grain-revealing light along the oak. The design conspicuously withholds decorative fixtures; instead, light is architecturalized — the églomisé panels flanking the mirror function as concealed backlit apertures, glowing softly to provide flattering vertical face-lighting at the vanity, while the perimeter ceiling reveal implies a cove source for ambient wash. This suppression of visible hardware is central to the atmosphere: serene, hushed, and hotel-like in its precision, yet domesticated by the flowers and the intimate scale of the nook. Stylistically the project synthesizes into a refined **Soft Minimalism with a couture-modernist inflection** — the reductive planarity and reveal-detailing of contemporary minimalism warmed by mid-century Scandinavian wood craft and elevated by discreet Art Deco–adjacent flourishes in the metalwork and glass. It is a vocabulary of quiet luxury, where value is signaled not through ornament but through the tolerances of the joinery, the calibration of tone-on-tone, and the confidence to let a single ranunculus carry the room's only note of chroma.

The Independence Pass Residence is sited at the edge of a nature preserve in Aspen, Colorado with views of an alpine meadow, forests of evergreen and aspen trees, the Roaring Fork River and the Rocky Mountains.
The owners requested something very different from large, ostentatious heavy-timber homes that appear throughout the Aspen slopes: a home that would reach out to nature, not to gird against it; one that would feel light and modern, yet not on display. Approached from the north, a driveway leads from the main road to a private parking court, sheltered from wind and weather. The house stretches between two existing hills on the
site; forming a threshold to the views of the meandering river and nature preserve beyond. The lower level is expressed as a series of stone-clad walls that extend the building into the landscape. The upper level is a sleek box with a metal roof that floats on slender columns.
Pre-weathered wood siding is used to clad the upper level of the buildings and will continue to weather to a silver grey. All exterior cladding materials are intended to weather naturally with little maintenance to a palette of soft grays. A wall of black-stained cedar boards marks the main entry and extends through the house into a double-height space with a floating stair. Cantilevered wood stair treads lead to the upper level and main living pavilion where full-height walls of glass reveal panoramic views of the nature preserve and New York peak. The living room, dining room and kitchen occupy the center of the linear floor plan, with a master bedroom suite to the west and a family room and outdoor courtyard to the east. A fireplace clad in Vals quartzite forms the western
edge of the living room with a large skylight above. A reading alcove with a bench of wood slats is lined with Douglas fir panels and stainless steel shelves for display of the owner’s photography collection. Sliding panels of glass open to an outdoor deck, further blurring the
boundary between interior and exterior. A second stair connecting all levels of the house is crafted of a one-inch thick steel plate that is both structure and guardrail, slicing through the vertical space. Ground level spaces
include three bedrooms with individual baths, a guest suite, mudroom and exercise room.

York Mills Residence | Layered Contemporary Elegance
This York Mills residence was designed around the idea of quiet luxury expressed through architectural detail rather than excess. The interior combines classical residential proportions with contemporary forms, creating a sophisticated environment that feels highly curated while remaining comfortable and inviting for everyday living.
A key design strategy was to establish a continuous architectural language across the connected living, dining, and circulation spaces. Rather than designing each zone independently, the spaces are visually tied together through consistent wall paneling, warm oak flooring, carefully controlled neutral tones, and a coordinated lighting strategy. This creates a strong sense of continuity and allows the eye to move naturally through the home.
The ceiling design plays an important role in defining the character of the interior. Elaborate geometric and curved coffering introduces a sculptural element overhead, transforming the ceiling into a fifth architectural surface. The integrated perimeter illumination emphasizes these forms after dark, while recessed lighting provides functional illumination without competing with the decorative architecture.
The black stone fireplace provides a deliberate counterpoint to the predominantly light interior. Its strong visual weight anchors the living area and establishes a dramatic focal point, while the softer curved seating and neutral upholstery balance its intensity. This contrast between monumental architectural elements and tactile, rounded furnishings gives the room a contemporary character without losing its residential warmth.
Furniture planning was approached as an exercise in conversation, proportion, and movement. The seating arrangement creates an intimate conversational zone while maintaining a clear visual and physical connection to the dining area. The curved forms soften the geometry of the architecture and introduce a more relaxed human scale within the larger room.
The dining area extends the social function of the space and is visually framed by the architectural detailing and artwork. A sculptural chandelier establishes a focal point above the dining table, while the large-scale artwork introduces color, energy, and individuality into the otherwise restrained palette. This balance between a controlled architectural background and expressive art allows the homeowner's personality to become part of the design.
The flooring contributes another layer of craftsmanship. The warm wood surface establishes continuity throughout the open interior, while geometric floor detailing and directional patterns subtly define zones without relying on physical partitions. This allows the architecture to remain open while still providing a sense of hierarchy and spatial organization.
Artwork, decorative objects, greenery, and furnishings were intentionally selected to introduce moments of color, texture, softness, and visual contrast. The result is not a purely minimalist interior; instead, it is a layered composition in which restraint provides the foundation for carefully selected moments of expression.
Overall, the project reflects a contemporary approach to traditional luxury, architectural, highly detailed, and timeless, but never overly formal. The design prioritizes proportion, craftsmanship, material relationships, natural light, and the experience of moving through the home, creating an interior that functions as both an elegant entertaining environment and a comfortable everyday living space.
