Our team was excited to hear our design submission SCATTERED SPHERES was a winner in the BENCHmark 2016 competition! The BENCHmark 2016 competition invited designers to submit proposals for the design of a permanent bench along the Bishop Grandin Trail - Winnipeg’s longest multi-use trail. A competition seeking designers to help make / celebrate places that embody physical literacy, add refinement to the art of traveling while providing a place to sit, read, discuss and exchange. In the end we decide to use reclaimed Elm as the species as choice as it pays homage to Winnipeg's Elm trees that have succumbed to Dutch Elm Disease. SCATTERED SPHERES The scattered spheres are turned from solid reclaimed White Oak, and are composed in a cluster along the Agassiz site. These pieces operate as both a composition in the landscape and a functional place for pause. These minimal and immediate forms encourage users to interact with them in fun and creative ways. These objects resist a prescribed function, but rather encourage the user to behave as a collaborator. The family's once-loved home had become a source of frustration. Their kitchen, a space meant for gathering and creating, felt cramped and outdated. Limited storage and poor organization made meal prep a tedious task, and entertaining guests a logistical nightmare. The laundry room, often overlooked, was equally problematic. Its cramped layout and lack of storage made laundry day a chore, and the noise of the washing machine echoed through the living room. To compound the issue, the absence of dedicated office spaces made working from home a constant struggle. One makeshift office was squeezed into the dining room, while another was relegated to the basement. The family was hesitant to embark on a major renovation, fearing the challenges and uncertainties that come with such a project. Finding a reliable contractor, ensuring timely completion, and worrying about potential shoddy workmanship were all valid concerns. We understood their anxieties and were committed to providing a smooth and stress-free experience. Our team crafted a design that addressed each of their concerns, transforming their home into a functional and stylish space. We reimagined the laundry room, creating a custom storage solution and incorporating a stackable washer and dryer. The open hallway to the living room was enclosed, creating a spacious closet with ample storage. The laundry room now seamlessly connected to the kitchen, simplifying the grocery unloading process. A former juliette balcony was converted into a dedicated office space, providing a peaceful and productive work-from-home environment. The dated and cluttered ensuite bathroom received a luxurious makeover. A clever pull-out storage system in the shower wall and a spacious niche provided much-needed organization. While every renovation project has its challenges, this one was remarkably smooth. The only significant hurdle was some additional structural work required in the basement to support the new office space. Our experienced team handled this efficiently, minimizing any disruption. The final result is a home that truly reflects the family's personality and lifestyle. The laundry room, now a cheerful and organized space with soft green cabinets, patterned floor tiles, and gold accents, showcases our attention to detail. The kitchen is a stunning centerpiece, featuring a striking combination of blue and white cabinets, dark hardwood floors, and a sleek white backsplash. The adjacent beverage bar, with its glass-fronted upper cabinets, provides an elegant space for entertaining. The ensuite bathroom is a spa-like retreat, with large-format marble tiles, a black vanity, and chrome fixtures creating an atmosphere of understated luxury. The renovation has had a profound impact on the family's daily life. Ample storage throughout the house has banished clutter, making it easier to maintain a tidy home. The seamless flow from the laundry room to the kitchen has streamlined the grocery unloading process, and the dedicated office spaces have transformed the work-from-home experience. Beyond the physical transformation, it was the shared moments and laughter that made this project truly special. The family's enthusiasm and good humor were contagious. One of the clients, with his big personality, even starred in a walk-through video of the finished project, showcasing his infectious joy. From choosing tiles to navigating unexpected challenges, the entire process was filled with warmth and collaboration. Even their four-year-old son, initially shy, warmed up to our site leader, Gus, nicknaming him "Gus the Bus," a moniker that endeared him to the entire team.

Located above the coast of Malibu, this two-story concrete and glass home is organized into a series of bands that hug the hillside and a central circulation spine. Living spaces are compressed between the retaining walls that hold back the earth and a series of glass facades facing the ocean and Santa Monica Bay. The name of the project stems from the physical and psychological protection provided by wearing reflective sunglasses. On the house the “glasses” allow for panoramic views of the ocean while also reflecting the landscape back onto the exterior face of the building. This new addition created an on-grade entry for physically challenged members of the family to use the new elevator located in the middle of the addition. The projecting part of the addition which covers the basement entrance is a greenhouse on the first floor. The left side is the new breakfast room with views of the entire, sun-filled back yard. The right side is a new stair to the first floor. Previously, the only access to the first floor was from an slippery exterior stair or a narrow interior basement stair. The entire basement was renovated into a game room with bar and also an entertainment center with wide screen TV. The four columns give a sense of character to the frequently used back door. The new foundation wall mortar was tooled to match the existing foundation wall. The new windows and transom lites break the character of the original colonial house allowing for maximum views and light in these informal, frequently used spaces.

This Portland kitchen transformation focused on reimagining the flow and functionality of the space, while also refreshing its look and feel. The original layout featured a peninsula that created a visual and physical barrier between the cooking and dining areas—and the patio outside—limiting both movement and social interaction. The homeowners goal was to remove this dividing element and replacing it with a thoughtfully designed custom island that serves as both a functional workspace and a natural gathering point. This strategic change opened up the entire space, creating a seamless flow while maintaining distinct zones for cooking and dining. Because one of the homeowners is a talented woodworker, we were able to incorporate some really lovely, custom handmade elements throughout the kitchen and dining room. The result is a kitchen that not only functions better but creates a more inviting environment for both everyday living and entertaining.

A vintage and dandy-inspired style with an aged appeal. This is a modern and unusual version of the type of mustache worn in London in the 19th century by distinct, elegant and intellectual gentlemen. The ‘handlebar’ moustache was attributed to the typical London dandies and distinguished their physical appearance. Moustaches nowadays are a symbol of modern dandies in all the major cities of the world and thanks to Progetti cuckoo clocks, they can now be hang to the wall or be put on a desk or on a shelf giving an elegant and ironic touch to any room. Made of wood, Dandy cuckoo is available in two colors, classic black or white. The Cuckoo strike is switched off automatically during the night controlled by a light sensor.

This wooded, lakeside home plays an influential role in the homeowners artistic vision as a magical realist painter. A daily ritual of physical immersion with the dirt and the worms of life contrasts with the otherworldly fantastical spaces the artist creates for her paintings. Nestled into a steep hill on an urban-sized lot, N44° 58' 34" is a creative response to a set of unique site conditions. The house is terraced up the hill, providing multiple connections to the large urban lot. This allows the main living spaces to wrap around the greenspace, providing numerous visual and physical relationships to the backyard. With a direct connection to the largest public park in Minneapolis, the backyard transforms seasonally to support the families active, outdoor lifestyle. A grand, central staircase functions as a statement of modern design while windows simultaneously flood all three levels with light. The towering stair is framed by two distinct wings of the home, creating secluded, yet connected moments on each level.

Our Oakland studio went ultra bold with the design of the guest suite at the Kips Bay Designer Showhouse. We chose the theme of a harmonious union of the physical and virtual universe through thoughtful, curated design. We used a dichromatic color theme in the bedroom to create a soothing sanctuary. Luxurious bedding, stylish fabrics, and soft velvet window treatments add a distinctive touch. In the bathroom, we added the classic black and white color theme with stylish tiles and attractive fixtures, creating a beautiful, bold contrast. Originally built in 1892, this quaint log cabin has undergone a transformative renovation while preserving its charming character. Located near the Little Deschutes River in Central Oregon, within the historic Vandert Homestead, the home now boasts bright, open spaces for everyday living, complete with flexible aluminum clad folding doors. Working alongside contractor Bales Inc., architect Jeff Klein from Klein Architecture led the renovation with the goal of opening the once dark interior to natural light and the surrounding landscape. Central to the design was transforming a deteriorating garage into a new functional sunroom, creating a light-filled space that reorients the cabin design toward the patio and natural environment. Restoring a Historic Cabin with Aluminum Clad Folding Doors outdoor living with aluminum clad folding door A Revamped Cabin Design for Indoor-Outdoor Living The former garage is now a transitional space between the cabin and a natural stone patio. Positioned along the south elevation, the sunroom captures daylight throughout the day while acting as a buffer between the interior and exterior environments. A revised roof assembly was developed to resolve previous drainage failures. Working with framers, the design team incorporated a sloping roof system with a waterproof membrane to direct water away from the structure. This approach not only protected the log walls but also created access to a rooftop deck from the upper level, adding functional outdoor space without expanding the building footprint. “It was also critical to transform the existing dark, segmented interior spaces by physically opening them up to the new sunroom,” says Klein. “NanaWall systems offered the ideal solution for what we were after.” historical homestead interior Improving Spatial Flow, From the Kitchen to the Sunroom The kitchen remained largely intact during the renovation, retaining many of the elements that had defined the cabin’s character for decades. Features such as the farmhouse sink, concrete countertops, butcher-block island, and built-in seating were retained, creating a perfect blend of old and new. What changed was how the kitchen connects to the surrounding rooms. The layout now flows naturally into an adjacent dining area before extending into the newly added sunroom, delivering a seamless transition from the interiors to the outdoors through aluminum clad folding doors. Designed as a bright, welcoming space, it connects the historic cabin to the natural stone patio beyond. Interior designer Sue Olson helped create the room's atmosphere by choosing finishes and furnishings that complement the cabin's rustic materials while keeping the space open and inviting. The sunroom captures sunlight throughout the day and serves as a flexible space for dining, relaxing, and entertaining. The addition was designed to sit comfortably alongside the existing log structure while introducing expansive glazing and aluminum clad folding doors that draw daylight deep into the home. Specified with pine wood frames and simulated divided lites, the door complements the cabin’s traditional materials while introducing the flexibility of modern indoor-outdoor living. This home was built in the late 60’s to early 70’s in the classic “Brady Bunch” Ranch Style Genre. The new space was designed for a young active family, complete with big dog, that likes to entertain and finds themselves in the kitchen more than any other room in the house. “Mom” has a professional culinary background and has cooking events in her kitchen from time to time. A prior remodel created an enclosed kitchen with angled walls protruding into the space. Our Design Objective was to open the space physically and visually in a clean contemporary style to create a more functional and inviting kitchen, Breakfast Area and drink bar that receives heavy daily use. Walls were removed and reconfigured to create an open space. A professional style 60" dual-fuel range and stainless steel hood are the focal point of the kitchen along the back wall. To the left are a 36” all refrigerator and freezer separated by a pantry with chalk board that displays daily schedules or meals.
