Popular from about 1890 through 1940, Tudor is characterized by steeply pitched roofs, massive chimneys, tall narrow casement windows and decorative half-timbering. Shingle’s hallmarks include shingled walls, an asymmetrical façade, intersecting cross gables and extensive porches. A masterpiece of wood and stone, there is nothing ordinary about Rookwood, which combines the best of both worlds. Once inside the foyer, the 3,500-square foot main level opens with a 27-foot central living room with natural fireplace. Nearby is a large kitchen featuring an extended island, hearth room and butler’s pantry with an adjacent formal dining space near the front of the house. Also featured is a sun room and spacious study, both perfect for relaxing, as well as two nearby garages that add up to almost 1,500 square foot of space. A large master suite with bath and walk-in closet which dominates the 2,700-square foot second level which also includes three additional family bedrooms, a convenient laundry and a flexible 580-square-foot bonus space. Downstairs, the lower level boasts approximately 1,000 more square feet of finished space, including a recreation room, guest suite and additional storage.

Kitchen in a 1920s Colonial Revival home was totally gutted and renovated. In addition to updated electrical, plumbing, and lighting, new windows were added bringing in lots of natural light. Antique oak beams and used brick veneer provide contrast and lend a rustic touch. Warm site-finished white oak floors ground the space and provide more contrast, as do the natural grass shades. Stainless steel appliances provide a sleek modern edge without overwhelming the space, while a crackle subway tile accented with beaded and black liners give a nod to the traditional. Countertops of Olympian White Vermont Danby marble in the main work area have a subtle gray veining.

This homeowner enlisted the architects help to co-create a backyard that was carefully designed after the style of Santa Fe, New Mexico-- his favorite place on Earth. So for the pool design, the backdrop walls have thickening masses to them reminiscing the style of Santa Fe. It was important to capture for the lines of the pool to point to the pinnacle mountain vista in the backdrop. The pool overflows as a water feature into their back yard, like a sunken courtyard. It creates a tranquil sound for their backyard living space.

Home design - modern home design idea in Providence

After returning from a winter trip to discover his house had been flooded by a burst second-floor pipe, this homeowner was ready to address the renovations and additions that he had been pondering for about a decade. It was important to him to respect the original character of the c. +/- 1910 two-bedroom small home that had been in his family for years, while re-imagining the kitchen and flow. In response, KHS proposed a one-story addition, recalling an enclosed porch, which springs from the front roof line and then wraps the house to the north. An informal front dining space, complete with built-in banquette, occupies the east end of the addition behind large double-hung windows sized to match those on the original house, and a new kitchen occupies the west end of the addition behind smaller casement windows at counter height. New French doors to the rear allow the owner greater access to an outdoor room edged by the house to the east, the existing one-car garage to the south, and a rear rock wall to the west. Much of the lot to the north was left open for the owner’s annual summer volley ball party. The first-floor was then reconfigured, capturing additional interior space from a recessed porch on the rear, to create a rear mudroom entrance hall, full bath, and den, which could someday function as a third bedroom if needed. Upstairs, a rear shed dormer was extended to the north and east so that head room could be increased, rendering more of the owner’s office/second bedroom usable. Windows and doors were relocated as necessary to better serve the new plan and to capture more daylight. Having expanded from its original 1100 square feet to approximately 1700 square feet, it’s still a small, sweet house – only freshly updated, and with a hint of porchiness. Photos by Katie Hutchison

While the use of simplicity, clean lines, and fairly neutral colors bring a sense of calmness and comfort to space, this transitional style bathroom brings interesting traditional features as well. The white painted shaker door cabinets with textured Caesarstone “Rugged Concrete” countertop and backsplash, mixed with the timeless dual cross handles’ lavatory faucet and exposed shower pipe, set the scene for traditional luxury. To maximize the function of the vanity, a wall tower cabinet, two sets of drawers and grooming pull-out provides plenty of storage for fresh clean towels, a hairdryer and toiletries essential for guests. Additional functional elements include a curbless shower with tiled linear drain, tempered frameless glass shower with a door that swings (opens in both directions), a shower seat, walls prepared for future grab bars and a multi-functional jet showerhead and hand shower. The no-slip soft linen-look porcelain tile shower flooring and walls maximize safety. The contrast of the linear woven look of sand and white for the floor tile adds visual interest while the hexagon shaped tile provides a waterfall look.

For a single woman working in downtown San Francisco, we were tasked with remodeling her 500 sq.ft. Victorian garden condo. We brought in more light by enlarging most of the openings to the rear and adding a sliding glass door in the kitchen. The kitchen features custom zebrawood cabinets, CaesarStone counters, stainless steel appliances and a large, deep square sink. The bathroom features a wall-hung Duravit vanity and toilet, recessed lighting, custom, built-in medicine cabinets and geometric glass tile. Wood tones in the kitchen and bath add a note of warmth to the clean modern lines. We designed a soft blue custom desk/tv unit and white bookshelves in the living room to make the most out of the space available. A modern JØTUL fireplace stove heats the space stylishly. We replaced all of the Victorian trim throughout with clean, modern trim and organized the ducts and pipes into soffits to create as orderly look as possible with the existing conditions.

In order to bridge the gap between contemporary and traditional design, streamlined creamy white cabinetry and clean-lined chrome hardware that pops against the cabinets was selected. An arabesque backsplash reinforces the calming white and gray color palette and furthers the tailored look the clients love. Architectural details such as furring panels, crown and cabinetry molding were incorporated and a furniture-like island is the centerpiece. Hardwood was chosen to ground the room and the final touch – elegant white stools with black piping.

Beams and ductwork were left exposed, yet refined, with additional piping to conceal electrical and gas lines. Century-old reclaimed brick was hand-picked by the homeowner for the east interior wall, encasing stained glass windows which were are also reclaimed and more than 100 years old. Aluminum bar-top seating areas in two spaces. A media center with custom cabinetry and pistons repurposed as cabinet pulls. And the star of the show, a full 4-seat wet bar with custom glass shelving, more custom cabinetry, and an integrated television-- one of 3 TVs in the space. The new one-of-a-kind basement has room for a professional 10-person poker table, pool table, 14' shuffleboard table, and plush seating.

I chose sumptous shades of sea glass for the master bedroom, as a soft accompaniment to the original Jacobsen-designed bed. The clean-lined chairs and ottoman are done with contrasting piping for definition. The Ikat print fabric on the window seats, throw pillows, and the duvet cover update the look.
