The design concept: to provide a multi-functional space whether for reading a good book or practicing yoga or meditating. It needed to be minimalistic and a much different space from the rest of the apartment, which is mostly white.

This home, built in 2017, features a professional yoga studio where the owner, a longtime yoga teacher, holds classes. The studio features a custom yoga wall, tressle, a prop for completing passive backbends, space for up to 6 students, and access to the patio outside giving the option to move class outdoors when desired. The studio is built with infrared heat to get the temperature up quickly without affecting the rest of the home and low impact cushioned flooring. The design allows for natural light with privacy from the high windows in the space.

This once cold and dusty basement was transformed into a gorgeous, serine yoga studio. Our client was determined to reuse and recycle as much of the existing features as possible. So, coming up with a design that felt "this century" with this much wood paneling was anything but trivial. After the initial nervous rush of "…OMG, what are we going to do here…", the challenge was surmounted, as it always is. The studio looks stunning. Cove lighting exaggerates the texture of the ceiling and highlights the beams. Cork flooring brings warmth and a unique softness to the space. The newly designed and remodeled bathroom feels like a high end spa. The client was ecstatic, which is, as always, the most important thing. Namaste!

Builder and wood craftsman David Vitarelli built a stunning yoga studio on a cliff overlooking the Hana Coast of Maui, with Bear Creek Lumber Alaskan Yellow Cedar. The AYC is visible inside and out. Yellow cedar is preferred in Hawaii because of its weather and bug resistance. Even the doors and cabinets were made of yellow cedar. The studio owners wanted a light and reflective wood to contrast with dark cliffs and lush tropical landscaping. David’s son, and nephew, work with him on his projects, learning skills that David learned from his father.
