QUARTERDECK RESTAURANT AND GRILL - SUMMERVILLE BEACH, NS Built where the Atlantic Ocean meets the graceful sweep of Summerville Beach, this restaurant was designed to have the look and feel of a Fisherman’s Wharf and Warehouse. A playful collaboration with Breakhouse Branding, Caralee Lloy and Greg Whynot.

How do you coordinate a delicate placement to highlight the features of the home to subtly compliment the landscape? To enhance the streetscape, the hydrangeas planted in the front garden provide the color inspiration for this Queen Anne Victorian. A warm white plays well with five tones of greyed violet to orchestrate the delicate garlands and unique plaster ornaments found on the façade leading your eye upwards to the graceful circular opening highlighted by 23 karat gold leaf. A four room master suite renovation in a 1930's Shaker Heights Tudor gem. The clients' fondness for soothing blue and cream tones permeate the space from warm Durango travertine in the bathroom to the calming aqua and gold wallpaper in the sitting room. All of the natural wood trim was painted Benjamin Moore's White Dove creating a much airier feel. Songbirds, another owner request, play a big role in the suite; featured on the hand painted bedroom walls, the custom vanity sink and furniture details, these feathered creatures add a sense of whimsy and natural beauty. The owners adore their traditional home's unique details and asked us to preserve the shaving sink, a 1930's era relic, now resting in a custom curved vanity under a television disguised in the mirror. It is gratifying to compare the before and after pictures. Renovating old homes is not easy, but the painstaking work of correcting sloping floors, outdated electrical systems, correcting plaster damage, etc. is overshadowed by the gratification of knowing this home has been lovingly restored and will grace the neighborhood for decades to come.

The design for this property involved creating a series of spaces to complement the principle spaces of the house and allow for the many activities of a very active family. A kitchen garden off the family entrance provides an intimate space for reflection, a sports lawn off the rear of the house allows for elegant entertainment as well as lawn tennis, and a graceful stair through a grove of hydrangea provides access to another large lawn and play area. Plant material is selected to complement the classic design of the house.

This vacation home was created for an avid saltwater fisherman and his family. As a coastal property, care was taken to capture breezes and views, encouraging inhabitants to slow down and soak in the ambiance. At the same time, the building is designed to withstand storms and the corrosive effects of salt air. Awareness of natural elements, including being kind to other inhabitants of the property, is evident in selections like turtle friendly exterior specialty LED lighting. Careful compositions of color, material, opacity, and transparency create an exterior that is disciplined but playful. The building is layered in planes that accentuate shadow, forming a graceful backdrop to the palm trees, pool, and ocean beyond. The local coral stone used on the exterior is also seen inside, thus reinforcing a sense of place. Pops of saturated color balance the soothing palette of materials, art, and furnishings, never distracting from the breathtaking setting. High light from clerestories washes across interior surfaces and opens up views to the sky. The luminous volumes are easy-going and simple, but contain a few surprises. In the primary bath, the architect and client created a unique pattern of custom handmade tile.

Based on extensive interviews with our clients, one of our challenges of this job was to provide a practical and useable home for a couple who worked hard and played hard. They wanted a home that would be comfortable for them and since they entertained often, they required function yet desired drama and style. We worked with them from the ground up, selecting finishes, materials and fixtures for the entire home. We achieved comfort by using deep furniture pieces with white goose down cushions, suitable for curling up on. Colors and materials were selected based on rich tones and textures to provide drama while keeping with the practicality they desired. We also used eclectic pieces like the oversized chair and ottoman in the great room to add an unexpected yet comfortable touch. The chair is of a Balinese style with a unique wood frame offering a graceful balance of curved and straight lines. The floor plan was created to be conducive to traffic flow, necessary for entertaining. The other challenge we faced, was to give each room its own identity while maintaining a consistent flow throughout the home. Each space shares a similar color palette, attention to detail and uniqueness, while the furnishings, draperies and accessories provide individuality to each room.

In the dining room, function meets beauty in the most seamless way. With no room for coat storage in the entryway, we built custom coat closets into this space, disguising them as part of a sleek buffet area. Above the dining table, we selected a sculptural light fixture as the statement. Texture plays a key role here, with plush boucle chairs inviting guests to linger and a black-stained table grounding the space with its rich, tactile finish.

The North end of this media room holds a pool/ping pong table and a dart board. The west wall is graced by original art work by D Aaron Smith. The lower walls are textured with three colors. A European style Travertine looking Porcelain tile was used on the floors. Chocolate brown traditional cabinets with interior lighting and antique glass doors were hung on the East wall, allowing for a convenient place to cook and clean up. A traditional bar was strategically placed for eating and viewing those playing pool. The wool rugs were chosen to add color, warmth and decoration to the space.
