Partway through the planning process, the neighboring apartment became available, allowing two units to merge into a sprawling, light-filled home. The transformation focused on opening the space to create a sense of flow and connection to the breathtaking views. By reconfiguring the old, formal layout, we crafted a contemporary, expansive living area suited for a modern family. Gone were the outdated features, replaced with airy, connected rooms that celebrate the spectacular light and panoramic scenery. The result is a serene and versatile home in the sky, perfectly tailored for a couple beginning the empty nest phase, but spacious enough to accommodate family gatherings. What did require considerable aptitude was to strike the right balance between respect for these assets, particularly the panoramas, and livability. The all-white scheme doesn’t just complement Meier’s own aesthetic devotion to this purest of pure hues; it serves as a cool backdrop for the views, affording comfortable vantage points from which to enjoy them, yet not drawing attention away from the splendors of one of the world’s most distinctive boroughs. Sleek, low-lying Italian seating avoids distracting interruptions on the horizon line. Beautiful bronze fountain overlooking Lake Erie. Showcased in this project is a “Lakeside Landscape” created for a homeowner who purchased an old vacant lot on the banks of Lake Erie on the near west side of Cleveland. The lot was attractive given its location and potential for lakeside access, yet it presented some major challenges. First and foremost, the lay of the land was unfavorable, dropping 50 feet from the front of the house to the lake in just 175 linear feet. Erosion wasn’t the only concern in this case, as the space also needed to be functional. The result was over 1300 tons of locally-mined sandstone top rock and a strategic placement of each boulder to create a winding grass path to the lake and tiered entertaining spaces. One such space serves as a natural bluestone patio for unparalleled views of the lake, complimented by a decorative fountain sculpted by a local artist. The lower space is used as a secluded fire pit carved into the hillside with a bench overlooking the western horizon to catch the spectacular Lake Erie sunsets. The addition of 34 natural sandstone steps from the top patio to a reinforced concrete break wall meanders through a landscape with over 625 flowering trees, shrubs and perennials. Below the surface is a series of drains, tile, low-voltage lighting, and irrigation, all designed to maximize every square foot of usable space. What began as a cliff ended as a unique lakeside living space used for recreation, entertaining, and more importantly, as a retreat for family and friends alike.

In this Manhattan pied-à-terre renovation, Gallery tackled the entire apartment. A true full renovation, we updated the kitchen, master bathroom, and powder room, installed new flooring throughout the entire space, and built the entertainment center in the living room. DESIGN DETAILS The clients wanted their pied-à-terre to have some modern touches, but not too sleek or contemporary. Since it combines a number of styles and elements, transitional turned out to be their ideal aesthetic. Whites, grays, and earthy tones carried this color theme throughout the apartment. One of the clients is an artist and wanted wall space to display their original work, visible in the dining area and powder room in the photos below. The entertainment center is another highlight, with its white mosaic brick tile accent wall and glass open shelves to display family photos on both sides. Instead of tiles, the new powder room walls received a textured concrete application, resulting in an almost industrial vibe. This great-room originally had an enclosed kitchen with a drop ceiling. A 35' Douglas fir beam and post replace two of the original walls. The renovation now shows the homes true potential.

When meeting with our homeowners for this kitchen renovation project, they presented us with a large wish list. This busy family of five loves to cook and entertain for their large extended family. They felt their current kitchen was not functioning to its fullest potential. It felt cramped, dark, outdated, and had no flair. They wanted more room for storage, and convenient areas to hold their cookware. They had an unorganized pantry that wasn’t working for them, and a desk area that had become a clutter zone. They showed us examples of a cool toned color palette that they loved and asked us to bring in some farmhouse style elements with a modern aesthetic. We could not wait to transform this room! We began by reimagining the flow of the kitchen. In order to give them more counter space to use for food preparation, we moved the fridge to the wall where the desk was. We eliminated the messy pantry closet, and installed a tall cabinet to house an additional oven and built-in microwave. We added a large pantry cabinet to the right of the refrigerator to give them plenty of organized storage space, allowing easy access to snacks from the family room. On the left side of the fridge, we incorporated a drop zone area where they can leave their keys and mail when coming in from the garage. In the island we included a pull-out trash easily accessible from both the sink and the cooking areas, and added a vegetable sink to create an extended area for food prep. For the perimeter of the kitchen, we moved the range down to allow for a corner lazy susan and drawer bank for pots and pans, and provided them with a deep farmhouse sink to aid in washing larger items. By running the cabinetry up to the ceiling, we were able to provide them with additional storage space. We finished the cabinetry off with a beautiful decorative hood surround and capped the cabinets with a large stacked crown molding. The finishes we chose for the kitchen help modernize the space while keeping the room feeling warm and inviting. We used a soft grey paint on the perimeter cabinets and infused a warm chestnut stain on the island and decorative hood. We incorporated corbel details at both the hood and island to add some depth to the design. We included a very unique focal point to the ceiling above the island; it is a custom trim detail in the shape of an X, with dark paint as an accent. We topped the cabinetry with a luxurious calacatta quartz counter that created movement with large beautiful veining details. Hand-cut high gloss white subway tiles added brightness and sophistication to the space. Touches of silver were brought in with cabinet hardware and gooseneck faucets. We added an abundance of lighting including recessed lights, a farmhouse style silver pendant over the sink, two vintage style pendants at the island with ribbed glass, and a large wood and silver chandelier over the table, giving ample light and making the room feel bright. Adding under cabinet lighting provided our client with much needed task lighting while doing food prep. We finished the room off by using four comfortable upholstered counter stools with distressed white painted legs, adding to the farmhouse feel. New hand scraped oak plank hardwood flooring was added throughout the first floor along with large baseboard trim to tie the rest of the house in with the new kitchen design. Our client now has a large, updated, modernized kitchen to conjure up delicious meals for their family and friends.

Although many design trends come and go, it seems that the farmhouse style remains classic. And that’s a good thing, because this is a 100+ year old farmhouse. This half bathroom was nothing special. It contained a broken, box-store vanity, low ceilings, and boring finishes. So, I came up with a plan to brighten up and bring in its farmhouse roots! My number one priority was to the raise the ceiling. The rest of our home boasts 9-9 1/2′ ceilings. So, the fact that this ceiling was so low made the bathroom feel out of place. We tore out the drop ceiling to find the original plaster ceiling. But I had a cathedral ceiling on my heart, so we tore it out too and rebuilt the ceiling to follow the pitch of our home. New deviations of the farmhouse style continue to surface while keeping the style rooted in the past. I kept many the characteristics of the farmhouse style: white walls, white trim, and shiplap. But I poured a little of my personal style into the mix by using a stain on the cabinet, ceiling trim, and beam and added an earthy green to the door. Small spaces don’t need to settle for a dull, outdated design. Even if you can’t raise the ceiling, there is always untapped potential! Wallpaper, trim details, or artsy tile are all easy ways to add your special signature to any room.
