We completed this kitchen renovation for a SW. Calgary couple and as you’ll see, it was a much needed update after their 20+ years in the home. Clearly the look of the cabinets needed to be brought up to date, but function was on the top of the list for this client. She enjoys cooking and often hosts several friends over for canning and other big cooking parties so countertop space was a priority. Seeing as they also host large family gatherings, the cook didn’t want to feel abandoned in the kitchen when everyone else was in the next room so opening up the space was crucial. Here is what we did to change the way this space works for them… We revised the layout of the appliances and cabinets and relocated the plumbing so she could look out the window while she stood at the sink. Taking the cabinets up to the ceiling also gave them more storage as does the large pantry next to the fridge. An island wouldn’t fit, so we added a peninsula which gave them a spot to sit to have their morning coffee and a significant amount of additional counter space. By removing the walls between the kitchen and dining room it eliminated a small hallway that separated the kitchen and dining room and allowed for an open concept in their 1960’s home. To add visual interest to the space and to define the dining room, we added a coffered celing. Now, typically a coffered ceiling is done when you have three or four walls to anchor it in. It was a bit of a risk to add a “floating” coffered ceiling! However, it turned out beautifully. It wasn’t without it issues but I’m glad we added this element as it wouldn’t have been as interesting with a typical flat ceiling. In the dining room, a buffet was added for additional storage as well as new drapery panels, lighting and furniture. The peacock blue end chairs are stunning! Without that punch of color the dining room just wouldn’t be as outstanding. They are so lovely and really pushed the client out of her comfort zone – but she loves them and is glad she trusted us with that design decision. The result is a much more usable space that is also classic in style and just darn pretty to look at and be in! In Raleigh, North Carolina, we installed a 36-foot white oak slide in a custom home. The client loved it so much they ordered a second one—literally 15 minutes after we finished the installation. When Clyde returned to the office, there was already a check in the mailbox for slide number two. This 14,000-square-foot home now features 72 linear feet of curved white oak slide: one connecting the second floor to the main level, another linking the main floor to the finished basement. This European kitchen has several different areas and functions. Each area has its own specific details but are tied together with distinctive farmhouse feel, created by combining medium wood and white cabinetry, different styles of cabinetry, mixed metals, warm, earth toned tile floors, blue granite countertops and a subtle blue and white backsplash. The hand-hammered copper counter on the peninsula ties in with the hammered copper farmhouse sink. The blue azul granite countertops have a deep layer of texture and beautifully play off the blue and white Italian tile backsplash and accent wall. The high gloss black hood was custom-made and has chrome banding. The French Lacanche stove has soft gold controls. This kitchen also has radiant heat under its earth toned limestone floors. A special feature of this kitchen is the wood burning stove. Part of the original 1904 house, we repainted it and set it on a platform. We made the platform a cohesive part of the space defining wall by using a herringbone pattern trim, fluted porcelain tile and crown moulding with roping. The office area’s built in desk and cabinets provide a convenient work and storage space. Topping the room off is a coffered ceiling. In this classic English Tudor home located in Penn Valley, PA, we renovated the kitchen, mudroom, deck, patio, and the exterior walkways and driveway. The European kitchen features high end finishes and appliances, and heated floors for year-round comfort! The outdoor areas are spacious and inviting. The open trellis over the hot tub provides just the right amount of shelter. The Building History: At the southeast corner of East State Street and South Main Street in Doylestown is Lenape Hall One of the most distinctive buildings in Doylestown, the building was designed by architects Addison Hutton & Thomas Cernea and dedicated November 17th 1874. It originally provided Doylestown with a large town hall for public meetings, a concentrated store area and a much-needed indoor market. In the early 20th century, the Strand Theater showed movies here until the building of the New Strand Theater, in 1925. The owners of a charming home in the hills west of Paso Robles recently decided to remodel their not-so-charming kitchen. Referred to San Luis Kitchen by several of their friends, the homeowners visited our showroom and soon decided we were the best people to design a kitchen fitting the style of their home. We were delighted to get to work on the project right away. When we arrived at the house, we found a small, cramped and out-dated kitchen. The ceiling was low, the cabinets old fashioned and painted a stark dead white, and the best view in the house was neglected in a seldom-used breakfast nook (sequestered behind the kitchen peninsula). This kitchen was also handicapped by white tile counters with dark grout, odd-sized and cluttered cabinets, and small ‘desk’ tacked on to the side of the oven cabinet. Due to a marked lack of counter space & inadequate storage the homeowner had resorted to keeping her small appliances on a little cart parked in the corner and the garbage was just sitting by the wall in full view of everything! On the plus side, the kitchen opened into a nice dining room and had beautiful saltillo tile floors. Mrs. Homeowner loves to entertain and often hosts dinner parties for her friends. She enjoys visiting with her guests in the kitchen while putting the finishing touches on the evening’s meal. Sadly, her small kitchen really limited her interactions with her guests – she often felt left out of the mix at her own parties! This savvy homeowner dreamed big – a new kitchen that would accommodate multiple workstations, have space for guests to gather but not be in the way, and maybe a prettier transition from the kitchen to the dining (wine service area or hutch?) – while managing the remodel budget by reusing some of her major appliances and keeping (patching as needed) her existing floors. Responding to the homeowner’s stated wish list and the opportunities presented by the home's setting and existing architecture, the designers at San Luis Kitchen decided to expand the kitchen into the breakfast nook using Wood-Mode cabinetry. This change allowed the work area to be reoriented to take advantage of the great view – we replaced the existing window and added another while moving the door to gain space. A second sink and set of refrigerator drawers (housing fresh fruits & veggies) were included for the convenience of this mainly vegetarian cook – her prep station. The clean-up area now boasts a farmhouse style single bowl sink – adding to the ‘cottage’ charm. We located a new gas cook-top between the two workstations for easy access from each. Also tucked in here is a pullout trash/recycle cabinet for convenience and additional drawers for storage. Running parallel to the work counter we added a long butcher-block island with easy-to-access open shelves for the avid cook and seating for friendly guests placed just right to take in the view. A counter-top garage is used to hide excess small appliances. Glass door cabinets and open shelves are now available to display the owners beautiful dishware. The microwave was placed inconspicuously on the end of the island facing the refrigerator – easy access for guests (and extraneous family members) to help themselves to drinks and snacks while staying out of the cook’s way. We also moved the pantry storage away from the dining room (putting it on the far wall and closer to the work triangle) and added a furniture-like hutch in its place allowing the more formal dining area to flow seamlessly into the up-beat work area of the kitchen. This space is now also home (opposite wall) to an under counter wine refrigerator, a liquor cabinet and pretty glass door wall cabinet for stemware storage – meeting Mr. Homeowner’s desire for a bar service area. And then the aesthetic: an old-world style country cottage theme. The homeowners wanted the kitchen to have a warm feel while still loving the look of white cabinetry. San Luis Kitchen melded country-casual knotty pine base cabinets with vintage hand-brushed creamy white wall cabinets to create the desired cottage look. We also added bead board and mullioned glass doors for charm, used an inset doorstyle on the cabinets for authenticity, and mixed stone and wood counters to create an eclectic nuance in the space. All in all, the happy homeowners now boast a charming county cottage kitchen with plenty of space for entertaining their guests while creating gourmet meals to feed them.

This beautiful 1881 Alameda Victorian cottage, wonderfully embodying the Transitional Gothic-Eastlake era, had most of its original features intact. Our clients, one of whom is a painter, wanted to preserve the beauty of the historic home while modernizing its flow and function. From several small rooms, we created a bright, open artist’s studio. We dug out the basement for a large workshop, extending a new run of stair in keeping with the existing original staircase. While keeping the bones of the house intact, we combined small spaces into large rooms, closed off doorways that were in awkward places, removed unused chimneys, changed the circulation through the house for ease and good sightlines, and made new high doorways that work gracefully with the eleven foot high ceilings. We removed inconsistent picture railings to give wall space for the clients’ art collection and to enhance the height of the rooms. From a poorly laid out kitchen and adjunct utility rooms, we made a large kitchen and family room with nine-foot-high glass doors to a new large deck. A tall wood screen at one end of the deck, fire pit, and seating give the sense of an outdoor room, overlooking the owners’ intensively planted garden. A previous mismatched addition at the side of the house was removed and a cozy outdoor living space made where morning light is received. The original house was segmented into small spaces; the new open design lends itself to the clients’ lifestyle of entertaining groups of people, working from home, and enjoying indoor-outdoor living. After several years on the remodeling to-do list, the homeowners decided to update to add a sense of style to their half-bath/laundry and called the Renovisions team in to help create their vision for this space. The main goal was to provide a clean, open and inviting feel, while adding a nice balance of texture and interest. Upon a few visits to the Renovisions showroom, to discuss a suitable style, the final CAD design was approved and de-construction began. A new double-hung window replaced the old window, and measurements were taken for the new painted wood shutters. Out with the existing tile flooring, vanity, drop-in sink, toilet and outdated wall cabinets over laundry pair and window. In with the stylish, now taller shaker style vanity in stunning blue-green paint color. Pretty quartz countertop with under mount sink, and energy efficient comfort height toilet. The white subway wall tiles provide a classic look with timeless appeal fabulous with black porcelain floor tiles and contrasting light grey grout. Black and white provides a more dramatic look without compromising the rooms longevity. Overall. The client is thrilled with the simple and fresh look of her now more interesting and stylish bath/laundry room. The vintage industrial design with stylish mini pendant light fixtures with clear seedy glass shades in old bronze finish is a perfect addition to this newly remodeled space and ties in nicely with the oil rubbed bronze hardware and accessories. “The bathroom is SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL…….floor, tile, vanity, countertop, cabinets, lighting, and the faucet….I could not be more pleased!!!!!!” - Susan M. Mountain Modern Kitchen Design – New Construction Kitchen in Arcadia While relocating to OKC from the mountains of Colorado, our homeowners found a house under construction in Arcadia that they loved, but they were not thrilled with the kitchen or bathrooms that the builder was creating, nor the quality of the cabinetry that was planned. In searching for a better kitchen layout, they came across us. Brenda and Megan redesigned every room in the home that required cabinetry, beginning with the kitchen. The architect had created a smaller space where the site line allowed you to see directly through the kitchen to the garage door. Not pretty. Since the home was still being framed when they brought us in, we redesigned the kitchen layout to extend the range wall to hide this unsightly garage door. This added the extra benefit of allowing us to create a larger pantry behind that wall as well. As our clients love Mountain Modern design, we selected a slab door set on frameless cabinets to provide maximum functionality with a modern feel. We highlighted the Mountain Modern design theme by using our grain-matched walnut for all cabinets. They are also huge fans of daily coffee, so we created a coffee and beverage bar to prepare drinks to their liking – again utilizing our grain matched walnut frameless cabinetry. The counters we selected echo the Mountain Modern design, even for Oklahoma City, by providing strong veining with color throughout. Note the floating shelves left of the microwave – we continued the veining on the countertop material placed within the floating shelves to mimic the gran match cabinetry! From a functional design perspective, we installed several pull-out accessory drawers, many base drawers, and a mixer lift station to help with the heavy lifting. In the island we placed a Galley Workstation sink with the Galley Tap to provide a space for meal prep and serve. The design was completed with careful installation of puck lighting, strip lighting, and sconces flanking the venthood, set atop more of this beautiful countertop material used as the backsplash. The result? Our clients were, and are, thrilled in their new kitchen. As you can see, this kitchen was selected for the cover of the National Kitchen and Bath Magazine, issued and shown at the National Kitchen and Bath Show – KBIS – in Las Vegas! We are honored to have been selected for this tremendous achievement!

The curved arch above the dining room opening is a visual effect that was used several times throughout the redesigned areas. It adds another design element lending to a softer, more casual feel of the space.

After several years on the remodeling to-do list, the homeowners decided to update to add a sense of style to their half-bath/laundry and called the Renovisions team in to help create their vision for this space. The main goal was to provide a clean, open and inviting feel, while adding a nice balance of texture and interest. Upon a few visits to the Renovisions showroom, to discuss a suitable style, the final CAD design was approved and de-construction began. A new double-hung window replaced the old window, and measurements were taken for the new painted wood shutters. Out with the existing tile flooring, vanity, drop-in sink, toilet and outdated wall cabinets over laundry pair and window. In with the stylish, now taller shaker style vanity in stunning blue-green paint color. Pretty quartz countertop with under mount sink, and energy efficient comfort height toilet. The white subway wall tiles provide a classic look with timeless appeal fabulous with black porcelain floor tiles and contrasting light grey grout. Black and white provides a more dramatic look without compromising the rooms longevity. Overall. The client is thrilled with the simple and fresh look of her now more interesting and stylish bath/laundry room. The vintage industrial design with stylish mini pendant light fixtures with clear seedy glass shades in old bronze finish is a perfect addition to this newly remodeled space and ties in nicely with the oil rubbed bronze hardware and accessories. “The bathroom is SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL…….floor, tile, vanity, countertop, cabinets, lighting, and the faucet….I could not be more pleased!!!!!!” - Susan M. We completed this kitchen renovation for a SW. Calgary couple and as you’ll see, it was a much needed update after their 20+ years in the home. Clearly the look of the cabinets needed to be brought up to date, but function was on the top of the list for this client. She enjoys cooking and often hosts several friends over for canning and other big cooking parties so countertop space was a priority. Seeing as they also host large family gatherings, the cook didn’t want to feel abandoned in the kitchen when everyone else was in the next room so opening up the space was crucial. Here is what we did to change the way this space works for them… We revised the layout of the appliances and cabinets and relocated the plumbing so she could look out the window while she stood at the sink. Taking the cabinets up to the ceiling also gave them more storage as does the large pantry next to the fridge. An island wouldn’t fit, so we added a peninsula which gave them a spot to sit to have their morning coffee and a significant amount of additional counter space. By removing the walls between the kitchen and dining room it eliminated a small hallway that separated the kitchen and dining room and allowed for an open concept in their 1960’s home. To add visual interest to the space and to define the dining room, we added a coffered celing. Now, typically a coffered ceiling is done when you have three or four walls to anchor it in. It was a bit of a risk to add a “floating” coffered ceiling! However, it turned out beautifully. It wasn’t without it issues but I’m glad we added this element as it wouldn’t have been as interesting with a typical flat ceiling. In the dining room, a buffet was added for additional storage as well as new drapery panels, lighting and furniture. The peacock blue end chairs are stunning! Without that punch of color the dining room just wouldn’t be as outstanding. They are so lovely and really pushed the client out of her comfort zone – but she loves them and is glad she trusted us with that design decision. The result is a much more usable space that is also classic in style and just darn pretty to look at and be in! And I know this client is enjoying her new kitchen day to day and on special family occasions. Adrian Shellard Photography

This residence located in San Francisco’s Glen Park was built in the late 60’s. At the time of purchase it had sustained severe water intrusion. BBGC performed extensive water and mold remediation to the entire house. The project also included a full seismic retrofit and installation of new electrical, plumbing, and heating systems. This newly transformed urban dwelling was featured in the AIA SF 2007 Home Tour.

A Vermont Guest House Project which involved renovation to an existing art studio (see existing photos)and an addition to house the bedroom area and loft. The Architectural and Interior Design concepts were developed by Mitra Designs Studio Collaborative(me), a design firm based in Vermont. This building is located on a 160-acre private property. The guest house sits on beautiful rocky ledges, looking over the spectacular view of the Adirondack Mountains, a pond, and Vermont farm fields. The homeowners are Americans who work and live in Hongkong and come to their Vermont home several times a year to get away from the hustle bustles of the concrete city of Hongkong, ( please note that their main house is a short walk to this guest house). The goal of the design was to create a Guest House and a Forest retreat with subtle influences of a modern tree-house and a theme where east-meets-west! The original studio was not insulated and did not have plumbing, as you can see in the photos plumbing was added as part of the renovation and the building was insulated very tightly. All built-ins including the queen bed and two children's bed was custom designed by Mitra. Much of the design concepts were created artfully to bring the outdoors indoors. The bathroom theme of concrete counters and river stone pebble flooring suggests subtle influences of a river that is surrounded with rocks; Mitra selected mid-century furniture to further complement this clean and modern forest retreat. A local artist was commissioned to take artful photographs from the natural surroundings of this property. Her photographs were then infused on a floating brushed chrome plate. When the homeowners decided to move from San Francisco to the Central Coast, they were looking for a more relaxed lifestyle, a unique place to call their own, and an environment conducive to raising their young children. They found it all in San Luis Obispo. They had owned a house here in SLO for several years that they had used as a rental. As the homeowners own and run a contracting business and relocation was not impossible, they decided to move their business and make this SLO rental into their dream home. As a rental, the house was in a bare-bones condition. The kitchen had old white cabinets, boring white tile counters, and a horrendous vinyl tile floor. Not only was the kitchen out-of-date and old-fashioned, it was also pretty worn out. The tiles were cracking and the grout was stained, the cabinet doors were sagging, and the appliances were conflicting (ie: you could not open the stove and dishwasher at the same time). To top it all off, the kitchen was just too small for the custom home the homeowners wanted to create. Thus enters San Luis Kitchen. At the beginning of their quest to remodel, the homeowners visited San Luis Kitchen’s showroom and fell in love with our Tuscan Grotto display. They sat down with our designers and together we worked out the scope of the project, the budget for cabinetry and how that fit into their overall budget, and then we worked on the new design for the home starting with the kitchen. As the homeowners felt the kitchen was cramped, it was decided to expand by moving the window wall out onto the existing porch. Besides the extra space gained, moving the wall brought the kitchen window out from under the porch roof – increasing the natural light available in the space. (It really helps when the homeowner both understands building and can do his own contracting and construction.) A new arched window and stone clad wall now highlights the end of the kitchen. As we gained wall space, we were able to move the range and add a plaster hood, creating a focal nice focal point for the kitchen. The other long wall now houses a Sub-Zero refrigerator and lots of counter workspace. Then we completed the kitchen by adding a wrap-around wet bar extending into the old dining space. We included a pull-out pantry unit with open shelves above it, wine cubbies, a cabinet for glassware recessed into the wall, under-counter refrigerator drawers, sink base and trash cabinet, along with a decorative bookcase cabinet and bar seating. Lots of function in this corner of the kitchen; a bar for entertaining and a snack station for the kids. After the kitchen design was finalized and ordered, the homeowners turned their attention to the rest of the house. They asked San Luis Kitchen to help with their master suite, a guest bath, their home control center (essentially a deck tucked under the main staircase) and finally their laundry room. Here are the photos: I wish I could show you the rest of the house. The homeowners took a poor rental house and turned it into a showpiece! They added custom concrete floors, unique fiber optic lighting, large picture windows, and much more. There is now an outdoor kitchen complete with pizza oven, an outdoor shower and exquisite garden.
