Our client’s goal was to create a small, high-performance, healthy home for herself and her teenage son while providing a place for her father to age in place. An attached private accessory dwelling provides a space for him as well as flexibility in the future. The new home was designed to minimize its footprint on site, made smaller than the original 1930’s house. Embracing adaptability and efficiency, the residence includes two dwellings: a one-bedroom 795 square-foot accessory dwelling at the lower grade and a two-story 1330 square-foot primary dwelling located above. Involved in all aspects of project execution, our client oversaw the process by living in a used trailer parked in the backyard throughout the project’s construction. Family-Share focused on maximizing the footprint’s performance, access to natural light and the health of the occupants. Sustainable features include high-performance glazing, solar preheat for domestic and hot water in-floor heating and reclaimed fir car decking rainscreen siding.

This photo captures the bathroom during the demolition and renovation process prior to the complete remodel transformation. The original built-in bathtub and surrounding finishes are in the process of being removed to make way for a new modern layout and upgraded materials. Construction equipment, exposed flooring, and active work areas highlight the extensive preparation involved in updating the space. The remodel includes structural improvements, updated plumbing and electrical systems, and a redesigned floor plan that ultimately transforms the outdated bathroom into a bright, contemporary spa-inspired retreat.

Ceilings were clipped to eliminate busy wall angles and the shower was raised to create loft in the space.

This is a shaped handrail which serpentines around an elliptical landing and down and elliptical stairway. My head still spins when I recall the math involved getting this just right. The long runs were shaped with machines and routers, but the turnout at the bottom was all done by hand and a keen eye. To further complicate the process, the finish on it is a multi-stepped process which needed to be done in place after all the joinery was completed and faired. We did all that on temporary spindles and then enlisted the help of all the carpenters on site to lift it up in one piece and set it back down on over 150 spindles. The contractor on this project was Birdseye Building Company of Richmond, Vermont.

Beautiful modern wood garage door. Shou Sugi Ban 焼杉板 (or Yakisugi) is an ancient Japanese exterior siding technique that preserves wood by charring it with fire. Traditionally, Sugi wood (cryptomeria japonica L.f., also called Japanese cedar) was used. The process involves charring the wood, cooling it, cleaning it, and finishing it with a natural oil.

During the design process it grew to having a living space above the studio, which grew to having a small house attached to the studio forming a compound. At this point it became clear to the client; the project was outgrowing the neighborhood. After re-evaluating the project, the live / work compound is currently sited in a natural protected nest with post card views of Mount Sopris & the Roaring Fork Valley. The courtyard compound consist of the central south facing piece being the studio flanked by a simple 2500 sq ft 2 bedroom, 2 story house one the west side, and a multi purpose guest wing /studio on the east side. The evolution of this compound came to include the desire to have the building blend into the surrounding landscape, and at the same time become the backdrop to create and display his sculpture. “Jess has been our architect on several projects over the past ten years.
