AZL interiorsWith tall ceilings, an impressive stone fireplace, and original wooden beams, this home in Glen Ellyn, a suburb of Chicago, had plenty of character and a style that felt coastal. Six months into the purchase of their home, this family of six contacted Alessia Loffredo and Sarah Coscarelli of ReDesign Home to complete their home’s renovation by tackling the kitchen.
“Surprisingly, the kitchen was the one room in the home that lacked interest due to a challenging layout between kitchen, butler pantry, and pantry,” the designer shared, “the cabinetry was not proportionate to the space’s large footprint and height. None of the house’s architectural features were introduced into kitchen aside from the wooden beams crossing the room throughout the main floor including the family room.” She moved the pantry door closer to the prepping and cooking area while converting the former butler pantry a bar. Alessia designed an oversized hood around the stove to counterbalance the impressive stone fireplace located at the opposite side of the living space.
She then wanted to include functionality, using Trim Tech‘s cabinets, featuring a pair with retractable doors, for easy access, flanking both sides of the range. The client had asked for an island that would be larger than the original in their space – Alessia made the smart decision that if it was to increase in size it shouldn’t increase in visual weight and designed it with legs, raised above the floor. Made out of steel, by Wayward Machine Co., along with a marble-replicating porcelain countertop, it was designed with durability in mind to withstand anything that her client’s four children would throw at it. Finally, she added finishing touches to the space in the form of brass hardware from Katonah Chicago, with similar toned wall lighting and faucet.

This design made the most sense proportionately and functionally, as the desk is sleek and doesn’t take up too much space but offers somewhere (tucked out of view) to rest papers, keys, and other smaller items we tend to leave around.

Crystal Blackshaw InteriorsI use dressers a lot as bedside tables. They are a good size, hold a lot, and next to a queen or king bed are more proportionate and scaled. Top it with a tall or large lamp and either a couple large objects or a variety of smaller objects (styling is a whole other chapter!) You have a instant focal point to the bedroom.

The direction we took was a combination of calm beige color scheme with clean lines and smooth surfaces.
The continuation of the same materials throughout the house finally bonded all the different spaces into a singular home.
The two guest bathrooms were made with Cloe zellige style tiles and custom floating vanities made from white oak.
The same oak was used also for the built-in TV wall as floating shelves and base cabinets with a large, tiled center piece for the recessed TV and the electric fireplace.
The kitchen also received some of the white oak love in the form of the Island and the recessed cooking area.
The biggest issue with the kitchen space was the lack of proportions between the width and its length vs. the extreme height of the vaulted ceiling.
The solution I came up with was a secondary line of wall cabinets to be the same depth as the full height units to create a wrap around and make the space more proportionate.
Continuing to the master bathroom, here we have a true walk-in master bath suite, no door needed with this size of space.
All the walls received porcelain semi slab treatment. (72x36 porcelain tile) a lot of work went into selecting the correct tile pieces to give it the effect of a single slab installation but without the added cost.
All fixtures are by Kohler with their fantastic modern gold finish.
The result was a perfect flow of calm beige colors and warmth of natural wood throughout.

The owners wished to create some individuality and transform the exterior side entry point of their home with timeless inspired character and purpose to match their lifestyle. One of the challenges during the preliminary phase of the project was to create a design solution that transformed the side entry of the home, while remaining architecturally proportionate to the existing structure.

dRemodeling Design-BuildAlthough this kitchen had an abundance in square footage, the double bay windows made it a challenge to fit in a proportionate amount of cabinetry. When faced with this challenge, the designer proposed to set the main cabinetry back on the inside wall of the kitchen behind the island. Acting as a multi use space, the rear counter of the kitchen is great for meal prep, serving, and wine and spirits.

Tracy SpakeIdeally, the wall cabinets left & right of the hood would be sized proportionately, but this client required/preferred a base corner lazy susan cabinet which gave us spacing along the hood wall of cabinets that required for disproportionate wall cabinetry. Sometimes, it's give and take in design!

The painted poplar wood trim and is amply proportionate to the stepped crown moulding and the luxury of the window trim is further enhanced by the sumptuous back-band and handsome sill &apron detail.
