The industrious clients came to us with dreams of a new garage structure to provide a home for all of their passions. The design came together around a three car garage with room for a micro-brewery, workshop and bicycle storage – all attached to the house via a new three season porch – and a native prairie landscape and sauna structure on the roof.

A period correct breeze block wall was built as a backdrop to the kitchen view and an industrial charcoal corrugated metal fence completes the leitmotif and creates privacy around the property.

DRM Design Group provided Landscape Architecture and construction services for this Bixby country residence. The project consisted of a native plant palette, drip irrigation system, outdoor lighting, tree protection and low impact construction practices, custom metal trellis and arbors. The layout was simple and clean so as to not distract from the natural beauty of their surroundings.

Dramatic plant textures, modern hardscaping and sharp angles enhanced this mid-century modern bungalow. Soft plants were chosen to contrast with the sharp angles of the pathways and hard edges of the MCM home, while providing all-season interest. Horizontal privacy screens wrap the front porch and create intimate garden spaces – some visible only from the street and some visible only from inside the home. The front yard is relatively small in size, but full of colorful texture.

This is an example of a small farmhouse full sun backyard gravel formal garden in Bridgeport for summer.

Soft colourful plantings along the pathway, seasonal interest begins in early spring and the planting is still colourful in late summer. Less than a year old the planting was installed last October 2019 and now in August, it looks like it has always been there.

A circular concrete retaining wall provides a welcoming sitting area nestled in the lower part of the landscape. Positioned in an ideal spot for the homeowners to enjoy the the stunning water-side views throughout the seasons and at sunset. The ground cover Lotus (Parrot's Beak) was just beginning to cascade down the wall when this photos was taken. Lagoon-side property in the Bel Marin Keys, Novato, CA. Design Eileen Kelly
