When The Dragonfly Foundation needed a new location to support pediatric cancer families, they chose the historic Hauck-Heine House (1906) in Clifton. Just one problem: the house needed some updates. That’s where Norwood Hardware came in. In 2019 we supplied cherub knobs in the library (Anne at Home) and hardware in the main level bathroom (Newport Brass). The Foundation wanted period hardware reflective of the house’s original design, and we were happy to accommodate. Faced with a new construction project for this growing family of six, LiLu Interiors combined new home amenities with old world character to bring about efficient charm. The result is a fabulously functional redesign of the kitchen with adjoining mudroom and kids’ powder room that support their on-the-go lifestyle. Some rooms never quite find their purpose. That was the case with this space, which had gradually become a combination home office, pantry overflow area, pet zone, and general catch-all for daily life. While it offered plenty of square footage, it wasn’t helping the homeowners stay organized, and valuable storage was scattered between an overcrowded pantry closet and various pieces of furniture throughout the room. Having previously partnered with Drury Design on a kitchen remodel, these homeowners once again turned to Senior Designer Samantha Schoell to help them rethink how their home could better support the way they actually live. What began as a conversation about adding some cabinetry quickly evolved into a comprehensive storage solution — one designed to accommodate everything from groceries and sports equipment to pet supplies and everyday household essentials. Design Objectives: Create Organization: Consolidate pantry overflow, household supplies, and everyday essentials into a single, highly functional space. Support Family Life: Provide dedicated storage for coats, bags, sports equipment, and the routines of an active household. Accommodate Pets: Incorporate thoughtful features for the family’s dogs while maintaining a clean, organized appearance. Maximize Existing Space: Transform an underutilized room without expanding the home’s footprint. Maintain Flexibility: Preserve the room’s long-term versatility and appeal for future homeowners. Design Challenges: Multiple Functions: The room was being used simultaneously as a home office, pantry, storage area, and pet space without a cohesive organizational strategy. Insufficient Pantry Storage: The nearby pantry closet had become overcrowded and difficult to navigate. Visual Clutter: Everyday items, pet supplies, and household necessities lacked dedicated storage locations. Unused Potential: Despite its generous size, the room was not contributing meaningfully to the home’s overall functionality. Balancing Practicality and Style: The homeowners wanted substantial storage without creating a space that felt overly utilitarian. Design Solutions: Purpose-Built Storage Plan: Custom cabinetry was designed to support multiple functions within a unified storage system, allowing the room to serve as a mudroom, pantry extension, household hub, and pet station. Expanded Pantry Capacity: Floor-to-ceiling cabinetry, a secondary refrigerator, and extensive drawer storage dramatically increased food storage and organization capabilities. Hidden Organization: Closed cabinetry conceals household items, sports gear, pet supplies, and everyday clutter, creating a calm and orderly appearance. Full-Room Transformation: Rather than simply adding cabinets to one wall, the design reimagined the entire room, utilizing its footprint to create a true family command center. Furniture-Inspired Cabinetry: Warm wood finishes, decorative hardware, open display shelving, and thoughtful detailing elevate the room beyond pure utility, helping it feel like a natural extension of the home’s design. The most successful remodeling projects often solve problems homeowners have simply learned to live with. In this case, a room that once served several purposes — but excelled at none — was transformed into one of the hardest-working spaces in the home. Today, groceries, pet supplies, seasonal gear, household essentials, and daily routines all have a designated place. Even the family’s dogs were thoughtfully considered, with a built-in resting area integrated into the cabinetry. The result is a room that feels remarkably organized despite supporting countless everyday activities — a reflection of how thoughtful design can bring clarity, efficiency, and calm to the busiest parts of family life.

This office was created for the Designer Showhouse, and our vision was to represent female empowerment. We wanted the office to reflect the life of a vibrant and empowered woman. Someone that’s busy, on the go, well-traveled, and full of energy. The space also reflected other aspects of this woman’s role as the head of a family and the rock that provides calm, peace, and comfort to everyone around her. We showcased these qualities with decor like the built-in library – busy, chaotic yet organized; the tone and color of the wallpaper; and the furniture we chose. The bench by the window is part of our SORELLA Furniture line, which is also the result of female leadership and empowerment. Bathroom remodel by Che Bella Interiors, serving the Minneapolis & St. Paul area - Our client had recently purchased a coveted lakefront home on the spectacular shoreline of Crystal Lake. While the location and breathtaking views were picture-perfect, the interior was ripe for a transformation and provided an inspiring canvas for a remodel. The scope of this 2020 project included the master bathroom and bedroom, which featured dated finishes, cramped spaces, and a lack of privacy. A wish list included removing the oversized tub, more bathroom storage, a modern color palette, texture, and enhancing privacy to transform their master retreat into the space of their dreams. Through creative space planning and artful design, we created a swoon-worthy master retreat featuring a soothing, inviting, romantic vibe – a perfect pairing with the home’s lakefront setting. Within the bathroom, the challenge was to make the space as functional as possible, something it previously lacked. We extended the shower walls to add more privacy and leveraged a newly discovered wall cavity to create a bench seat. Added storage was found by creating built-in linen cabinets and hidden medicine cabinets in the vanity mirrors. Meanwhile, a selection of hexagon-shaped porcelain floor tile and a blue accent tile in the shower make a timeless and subtle statement, reflecting the tranquility of the suite as a whole. Cramped kitchen be gone! That was the project motto and top priority. The goal was to transform the current layout from multiple smaller spaces into a connected whole that would activate the main level for our clients, a young family of four. The biggest obstacle was the wall dividing the kitchen and the dining room. Removing this wall was central to opening up and integrating the main living spaces, but the existing ductwork that ran right through the center of the wall posed a design challenge, er design opportunity. The resulting design solution features a central pantry that captures the ductwork and provides valuable storage- especially when compared to the original kitchen's 18" wide pantry cabinet. The pantry also anchors the kitchen island and serves as a visual separation of space between the kitchen and homework area. Through our design development process, we learned the formal living room was of no service to their lifestyle and therefore space they rarely spent time in. With that in mind, we proposed to eliminate the unused living room and make it the new dining room. Relocating the dining room to this space inherently felt right given the soaring ceiling and ample room for holiday dinners and celebrations. The new dining room was spacious enough for us to incorporate a conversational seating area in the warm, south-facing window alcove. Now what to do with the old dining room?! To answer that question we took inspiration from our clients' shared profession in education and developed a craft area/homework station for both of their boys. The semi-custom cabinetry of the desk area carries over to the adjacent wall and forms window bench base with storage that we topped with butcher block for a touch of warmth. While the boys are young, the bench drawers are the perfect place for a stash of toys close to the kitchen. The kitchen begins just beyond the window seat with their refrigerator enclosure. Opposite the refrigerator is the new pantry with twenty linear feet of shelving and space for brooms and a stick vacuum. Extending from the backside of the pantry the kitchen island design incorporates counter seating on the family room side and a cabinetry configuration on the kitchen side with drawer storage, a trashcan center, farmhouse sink, and dishwasher. We took careful time in design and execution to align the range and sink because while it might seem like a small detail, it plays an important role in supporting the symmetrical configuration of the back wall of the kitchen. The rear wall design utilizes an appliance garage mirrors the visual impact of the refrigerator enclosure and helps keep the now open kitchen tidy. Between the appliance garage and refrigerator enclosure is the cooking zone with 30" of cabinetry and work surface on either side of the range, a chimney style vent hood, and a bold graphic tile backsplash. The backsplash is just one of many personal touches we added to the space to reflect our client's modern eclectic style and love of color. Swooping lines of the mid-mod style barstools compliment the pendants and backsplash pattern. A pop of vibrant green on the frame of the pantry door adds a fresh wash of color to an otherwise neutral space. The big show stopper is the custom charcoal gray and copper chevron wall installation in the dining room. This was an idea our clients softly suggested, and we excitedly embraced the opportunity. It is also a kickass solution to the head-scratching design dilemma of how to fill a large and lofty wall. We are so grateful to bring this design to life for our clients and now dear friends.

Our clients are from Indiana but have been coming to Northern Michigan for about 50 years. They originally learned about our firm through an article in Traverse the Magazine where our owner, Stephanie Baldwin, provided information about working with a design firm. They then toured a couple of our projects during a parade of homes and decided they were ready to hire for their family's cottage needs. They already owned a cottage on Walloon Lake, but were ready to design and build a new cottage in its place for more room for their family. They wanted low maintenance materials and a timeless, Northern Michigan lake cottage style. The ultimate design was completed to take advantage of the lake views and access as well as creating plenty of room for family to stay while considering aging in place. The end result is a stunning home that will be enjoyed by the entire family for generations to come.

©StevenPaulWhitsitt_Photography Frequent entertainers, this large New York family wanted special attention paid to making their new kitchen both stylish and especially welcoming for their guests, so they hired Julie Deuble of Artisan Kitchens & Baths at Appliance Associates. In addition to the logistical issues of working in a high-rise, some of Deuble’s biggest challenges came with incorporating appliances, such as properly venting the 48-inch pro-style range. To integrate several large appliances into the relatively small space while maintaining a seamless appearance, she included custom panels over the refrigerator, dishwasher drawers, and refrigerator drawers. She then housed a microwave and a TV in identical wall cabinets. Since the kitchen opens to the living room, Deuble needed to design it as a space to be shown, not hidden. To achieve this, custom details were included throughout, such as a table-style peninsula with decorative legs, three-stage crown molding, mullion doors, an entertainment center with wine and liquor storage, and a desk designed to match the cabinetry. Well-thoughtout details such as the push-to-open hardware on the peninsula’s full-height cabinet doors provided the finishing touches to this showcase-worthy space. We also installed 42'' cabinets, LED cabinet lighting, and new pulls and backsplash. We gave this charming Bay Area home a refreshing update and small remodel. For the kitchen, the homeowners wanted to swap out their double oven for something smaller and more practical. To cater to such a change, we were able to design and build a brand new kitchen island! Not only did this open up previously used space but also provided much needed counter space and additional cabinets — plus it was a great place to add bold black accent hues! New lighting and a simple marble backsplash tied the entire space together. The living and dining areas also needed a little updating, so we added built-ins, colorful wallpaper and chairs, and a new statement light fixture to tie it all together.
