The Home The Polaris is about coming home. The homeowner is a United States Air Force Academy alumnus and his family, who found the perfect location to overlook his alma mater. This home is built for today and tomorrow, with elevator and ADA access. As you enter, sweeping Air Force Academy views greet you. The living area boasts a stunning fireplace wall, a crush-worthy kitchen and pantry and a lovely dining area. The mud room flows seamlessly into the master closet and kitchen. Along the way, a stop at the wine fridge is a nice perk. The office and second bedroom offer plenty of space for work and guests. With a gorgeous fire tray, grill area, infrared heaters and hot tub, the huge deck is a year-round destination. The basement is built to play, but the homeowners can lock off part of it if they wish. Pictured here is a closeup of the microwave and island storage which includes 4 pantry drawers, under cabinet microwave, drawers for pots and pans easily located near the cooktop and drawers for kitchen supplies, napkins, and other items. The kitchen was originally planned to mimic the location of appliances in her current kitchen to minimize re-learning of appliance locations. The only change was adding a trash cabinet between the fridge and the sink. A french door fridge allows someone in a wheelchair to easily access frozen and cold foods, while the water and ice dispenser on the outside of the door make it easy to stay hydrated rather than using the sink each time. She can roll up to the kitchen sink due to the recessed cabinetry under the sink or stand at counter height to put away dishes from the dishwasher. The dishwasher is ADA and very simple to use , and is raised off the floor so whether she is sitting or standing it's easier to reach. The gas cooktop has controls at the front making it easy to reach from the wheelchair and the exhaust fan above also has a control at the front. All cabinet door handles are D-shape, which makes them easy to grasp and there is plenty of electric outlets for charging phones, computers and small appliances. The kitchen island is table height at 30" so meal prep can be easily done in a wheelchair while guests and can be seated in a chair or wheelchair around the island. The dining chairs can also be turned around to add extra seating in the living room area. Pendant lights above the kitchen island light up the space, while recessed lighting in the kitchen and living room provide overall room lighting. There is also under cabinet lighting which makes the room glow at night! Wainscoting made of commercial grade material is strategically placed on sharp corners and exposed walls to reduce and minimize damage from the wheel chair, while creating a finished and complete look! We selected a free standing microwave to sit below the island, which is easy to use and is the same style as in her previous apartment. The island is 48" from the appliance wall, leaving ample space to open doors and maneuver around in the wheelchair and has easy access to the laundry area as well. We eliminated the pocket doors that had been in front of the laundry area for easy access, and since it was exposed, dressed it up with coordinating tile to the kitchen with additional cabinets above. There is a coordinating quartz counter on top of the washer and dryer for folding laundry or storing additional supplies.

An American family with three young children, living in Geneva Switzerland wanted a vacation property in Los Angeles and were thrilled to find a brand new contemporary home 2 blocks from the beach in Redondo Beach. This 3,200 square foot home with four bedrooms and 4 1/2 baths was designed by Los Angeles architect Patrick John Killen, founder and Managing Principal of Studio 9 one 2. Both the husband and the wife in this family have built careers in the fashion industry and wanted their home to reflect their international sense of style while still being a comfortable and playful environment for their children - and to honor the fact that this is - after all - a beach house. Surf's Up! The house is close enough to the beach to receive lots of ocean air and breezes; the property is also designed with an abundance of glass in large sweeping windows that flood this very open floor plan with natural light. The extra large patio that is revealed by sliding back several large glass panel doors expands the primary living area to include this outdoor space. The rooftop deck offers an additional private lounge area for daytime sunning or sunset cocktails with a teasing glimpse of the ocean and a panoramic view of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Each bedroom has its own private bath and there is a fireplace in one of the two living rooms and in the Master suite, to warm those South Bay evenings. All of this within a five minute stroll to the beach! Surf's Up! The interior designed by Studio 9 one 2 utilized an assortment of “green-friendly” materials, including cherry stained bamboo flooring. The colors of granite used in the chef-friendly kitchen accenting the stainless steel appliances are dark greens and rich browns .. all bathed in lots of natural light. In keeping with Cantoni’s motto of ”Great Design is a Way of Life” Bernadette designed a playroom for the children where they could have their own space to just hang out, play video games and watch movies. Each bedroom reflects the personalities of the children and the Master Bedroom is a soothing and relaxing retreat for the parents. On the main level the large open floor plan the Mercer sectional just beckons you to kick back and relax especially after spending the day at the beach. The dark oak Ritz dining table is perfect for entertaining the many friends and family who Surf's Up!get together for bar-b-ques and gourmet dining. This new design from our Canbury kitchen design and renovation project, opens up the entire main floor to the dining room and provides a more functional layout for our clients. By reconfiguring spaces and removing walls between the kitchen, family and dining rooms, we were able to create a new floorplan layout. Moving the existing family room to the front of the home, and opening up the kitchen to a new dining area with a feature fireplace, left room to design a generously sized island finished in a contrasting colour to the perimeter cabinetry. The new open view to the dining room highlights the fireplace, updated with a robust mantle and new Terracraft natural stone veneer in Swansea marble, applied from the floor to the ceiling. Our clients are from Indiana but have been coming to Northern Michigan for about 50 years. They originally learned about our firm through an article in Traverse the Magazine where our owner, Stephanie Baldwin, provided information about working with a design firm. They then toured a couple of our projects during a parade of homes and decided they were ready to hire for their family's cottage needs. They already owned a cottage on Walloon Lake, but were ready to design and build a new cottage in its place for more room for their family. They wanted low maintenance materials and a timeless, Northern Michigan lake cottage style. The ultimate design was completed to take advantage of the lake views and access as well as creating plenty of room for family to stay while considering aging in place. The end result is a stunning home that will be enjoyed by the entire family for generations to come.
