Designing additions for Victorian homes is a challenging task. The architects and builders who designed and built these homes were masters in their craft. No detail of design or proportion went unattended. Cummings Architects is often approached to work on these types of projects because of their unwavering dedication to ensure structural and aesthetic continuity both inside and out.
Upon meeting the owner of this stately home in Winchester, Massachusetts, Mathew immediately began sketching a beautifully detail drawing of a design for a family room with an upstairs master suite. Though the initial ideas were just rough concepts, the client could already see that Mathew’s vision for the house would blend the new space seamlessly into the fabric of the turn of the century home.
In the finished design, expanses of glass stretch along the lines of the living room, letting in an expansive amount of light and creating a sense of openness. The exterior walls and interior trims were designed to create an environment that merged the indoors and outdoors into a single comfortable space. The family enjoys this new room so much, that is has become their primary living space, making the original sitting rooms in the home a bit jealous.

The Provence collection offers French design elements in updated finishes for a relaxed take on a traditional style.
Provence is inspired by the rustic styles found in the French countryside, where artisans used local woods and unpretentious finishes to recreate the styles of the grand estates in Paris. Elements of Louis Philippe and Directoire styles feature graceful curves, deep molding profiles, and antiqued hardware with Knotty Elm veneers are highlighted in rich, organic finishes with warm undertones and a slight sheen -- a medium-toned Cobblestone finish and dark, rich Espresso finish. Each finish is accented with Antique Bronze hardware. Available in Queen, King, and Cal King.

In collaboration with K& L Interior Design, Blue Sound Construction remodeled much of the interior of this Queen Anne home, including millwork, staircase, multiple bathrooms,, home office, relocating the kitchen, and a fabulous upstairs suite complete with kitchenette and entertainment area. Shaking off its 90's stuffiness, the home befits its stunning views of downtown Seattle & the iconic Space Needle; its "Frenchy Modern" black and white aesthetic is the perfect "My Girl Friday" kind of hat tip to urban chic. Chef's kitchen with oversized island, custom range hood, custom white cabinets, marble mosaic framed backsplash, brass pulls and high-end nickel faucets. Coffered ceilings and custom wood windows.

When we first met, this classic 1900 home in Queen Anne was suffering from an unfortunate 1980’s remodel. The owner was interested in recapturing some of the historical charm with a modern sensibility, while celebrating the breath-taking views of Puget Sound and the Space Needle.
Custom details included woven blackened steel infill panels in the white oak cabinets, bookmatched marble back-splashes and countertops, bespoke brass and walnut light fixtures, and a hand-troweled venetian plaster hood surround.
The kitchen was equipped with top-notch appliances for this accomplished home cook, and ample storage was provided for gadgetry and food-stuffs.

An outdated 1920's kitchen in Bayside Queens was turned into a refreshed, classic and timeless space that utilized the very limited space to its maximum capacity. The cabinets were once outdated and a dark brown that made the space look even smaller. Now, they are a bright white, accompanied by white subway tile, a light quartzite countertop and brushed brass hardware throughout. What made all the difference was the use of the dark porcelain floors as a great contrast to all the white. We were also diligent to keep the hold extractor a clear glass and stainless steel.

What made all the difference was the use of the tiny hex tile floors. We were also diligent to keep the shower enclosure a clear glass and stainless steel.

A light-filled dining room designed within a Modern Heritage renovation, where original architectural cues are refined through restraint and proportion. An arched wall niche and preserved leaded glass details reference the home’s heritage, while natural wood furniture, soft textiles, and a sculptural pendant introduce warmth and contemporary clarity. The space feels timeless and grounded, allowing architecture and light to quietly define the experience.

Part of a second-storey addition to this 1906 family home, this luxurious bath is part of the new top-floor primary suite.
As the homeowner’s first-ever ensuite, the goal was a spacious, relaxing escape with stand-alone soaker tub and walk-in shower, incorporating colour and texture for a mid-century modern feel.
