This structure contains a living roof covered in succulents. A rain chain collects the rain run-off. A wood fire cob pizza oven will be tucked into the corner and sheltered by the rooftop

Organic soil amendments are cultivated into the soil. Since their nutrients are released by soil microbes, they need to be mixed into the soil so they're in contact with the soil food web. Our homeowners were looking for a garden where they could sit by the fire, grow vegetable and hear the sound of water. Their home was new construction in a modern farmhouse style. We used gravel and concrete as paving. Board formed concrete firepit keeps it feeling modern. The vegetable beds supply season vegetables and herbs.

This generously sized patio is framed with large planters constructed with concrete masonry units and capped with rock edged Pennsylvania bluestone. These planters are a perfect spot for the owner to grow herbs, vegetables and flowers. The planters make for an easy to grow, maintain and harvest kitchen herb garden. The plants love the abundant sunshine found near the patio. The planter height was designed to allow them to also be used as seating during outdoor gatherings.

Three raised beds make the most of limited growing space in this compact garden. I was invited to do the planting design for this compact hillside project after the hardscape was complete. The home is situated on a corner lot, and a number of very narrow beds and stepped planting arrows wrap the house in a "C" shape.
