Rustic two-story stone exterior home idea in Dallas

Addition to the the house that was originally designed in the late 1960 by Dimitry Vedensky, who was one of the original architects who developed the Sea Ranch. Addition was designed in association with Donlyn Lyndon, FAIA. Since 1963, The Sea Ranch has been characterized by its profound consciousness for nature. The rugged terrain of the northern California coast is now a preservation land and wildlife refuge. The residence is located on a lot surrounded by a Redwood forest and overlooks a sunny hillside which unfurls into a meadow below. The scope of the project consists of the renovation of the existing house and a two-story addition on the north side. The addition provided the owner with a new garage, bedroom, hobby room and a new deck to enjoy the view. The connection between the addition and the existing house has a slightly lower flat roof in order to preserve the view from the street to the distant ocean.

Joe Fletcher Atop a ridge in the Santa Lucia mountains of Carmel, California, an oak tree stands elevated above the fog and wrapped at its base in this ranch retreat. The weekend home’s design grew around the 100-year-old Valley Oak to form a horseshoe-shaped house that gathers ridgeline views of Oak, Madrone, and Redwood groves at its exterior and nestles around the tree at its center. The home’s orientation offers both the shade of the oak canopy in the courtyard and the sun flowing into the great room at the house’s rear façades. This modern take on a traditional ranch home offers contemporary materials and landscaping to a classic typology. From the main entry in the courtyard, one enters the home’s great room and immediately experiences the dramatic westward views across the 70 foot pool at the house’s rear. In this expansive public area, programmatic needs flow and connect - from the kitchen, whose windows face the courtyard, to the dining room, whose doors slide seamlessly into walls to create an outdoor dining pavilion. The primary circulation axes flank the internal courtyard, anchoring the house to its site and heightening the sense of scale by extending views outward at each of the corridor’s ends. Guest suites, complete with private kitchen and living room, and the garage are housed in auxiliary wings connected to the main house by covered walkways. Building materials including pre-weathered corrugated steel cladding, buff limestone walls, and large aluminum apertures, and the interior palette of cedar-clad ceilings, oil-rubbed steel, and exposed concrete floors soften the modern aesthetics into a refined but rugged ranch home.

The 3,400 SF, 3 – bedroom, 3 ½ bath main house feels larger than it is because we pulled the kids’ bedroom wing and master suite wing out from the public spaces and connected all three with a TV Den. Convenient ranch house features include a porte cochere at the side entrance to the mud room, a utility/sewing room near the kitchen, and covered porches that wrap two sides of the pool terrace. We designed a separate icehouse to showcase the owner’s unique collection of Texas memorabilia. The building includes a guest suite and a comfortable porch overlooking the pool. The main house and icehouse utilize reclaimed wood siding, brick, stone, tie, tin, and timbers alongside appropriate new materials to add a feeling of age.

MEB Architects Ltd: This eclectic French Country residence, on the shores of Lake Michigan, had its beginnings as a contemporary 1980s ranch home. Honoring the client’s love for French Architecture, this renovation completed its transformation by incorporating surgically placed additions, such as the steeply-pitched main gable, tower, side turret, and breezeway. The new stucco façade with stone quoins creates authenticity, yet relates well to the existing brickwork. We accented the windows with Adler blue-painted shutters and a warm, cedar shake roof which allows the home to coexist beautifully in its wooded lakefront setting.

New front entry with new canopy cover. An existing mid-century ranch was given a new lease on life with a whole house remodel and addition. An existing sunken living room had the floor raised and the front entry was relocated to make room for a complete master suite. The roof/ceiling over the entry and stair was raised with multiple clerestory lights introducing light into the center of the home. Finally, a compartmentalized existing layout was converted to an open plan with the kitchen/dining/living areas sharing a common area at the back of the home.
