Large farmhouse light wood floor dining room photo in Charlotte with white walls and a standard fireplace

This Tuscan-inspired home imbues casual elegance. Linen fabrics complemented by a neutral color palette help create a classic, comfortable interior. The kitchen, family and breakfast areas feature exposed beams and thin brick floors. The kitchen also includes a Bertazzoni Range and custom iron range hood, Caesarstone countertops, Perrin and Rowe faucet, and a Shaw Original sink. Handmade Winchester tiles from England create a focal backsplash.
The master bedroom includes a limestone fireplace and crystal antique chandeliers. The white Carrera marble master bath is marked by a free-standing nickel slipper bath tub and Rohl fixtures.

The addition of a new covered front porch really expands the front of this 1950's home... a newly redesigned and constructed cover entry changes this home's look and feel. We were able to update the exterior finishes at the same time, replacing the old windows with new dark framed more energy efficient windows. The exterior trim is now all pvc; this lowers maintenance and upkeep. New fiber cement lap and shake siding improve weather durability. Proper overhangs give an added architectural details while improving rainwater control and weather protection. Square tapered columns accent the stained, craftsmen style, douglas fir wood front door. The entire porch has some type of stone - Eldorado stone veneer faces the foundation and porch with natural bluestone on the porch steps and porch floor.

Baulinder Haus is located just a few houses down from a landmark Kansas City area home designed by Bauhaus architect Marcel Breuer. Baulinder Haus draws inspiration from the details of the neighboring home. Vertically oriented wood siding, simple forms, and overhanging masses—these were part of Breuer’s modernist palette. The house’s form consists of a series of stacked boxes, with public spaces on the ground level and private spaces in the boxes above. The boxes are oriented in a U-shaped plan to create a generous private courtyard. This was designed as an extension of the interior living space, blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors.
Floor-to-ceiling south facing windows in the courtyard are shaded by the overhanging second floor above to prohibit solar heat gain, but allow for passive solar heating in the winter. Other sustainable elements of the home include a geothermal heat pump HVAC system, energy efficient windows and sprayed foam insulation. The exterior wood is a vertical shiplap siding milled from FSC certified Machiche. Baulinder Haus was designed to meet and exceed requirements put forward by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for their Indoor airPLUS qualified homes, and is working toward Energy Star qualification.
Machiche and steel screening elements provide depth and texture to front facade.

Weatherwell Elite aluminum shutters were retro fitted to this outdoor room to allow the owners to use this space again after southerly winds and lack of privacy had prevented them from using the the area. They love: being able to operate the louvers to be at varying degrees of openness, having no maintenance, being able to hose to clean, and the life-like look and feel of the textured wood look powder coat.

These are the tall windows that flank the range and hood in the kitchen. They are 5 ft tall double hung windows with a 3 ft tall fixed transom window. They allow abundant morning light to fill the kitchen.

The client built this beautiful home on the water and wanted to create an East Coast seaside feel in the design. Glass cabinets with crossed mullions mimic the look of the clearstory windows which carried the theme around the room. Photography by Beth Singer

Located in an existing neighborhood of post-war houses, Skidmore Passivhaus merges contemporary design with the highest level of energy efficiency. Gernerous insulation, extremely airtight construction (tested at .32ach50), high performing triple glazed Zola European Windows, and a super-efficient heat recovery ventilator allow the structure to meet the stringent requirements of the German Passivhaus standard. Generous amounts of south facing glazing (0.5 shgc) maximize the solar gains for most of the year, while motorized exterior aluminum shades can be lowered to block unwanted summer heat gain resulting in extremely comfortable temperatures year round. An extensive green roof helps manage all stormwater on site, while a roof mounted 4.32 kW PV array provides enough electricity to result in a near net zero and truly sustainable building.
