These Northern Virginia residents have owned this vacation home for about ten years. With retirement imminent, they decided to give the entire home an over-haul. With it’s great bones and amazing location, this seemed like a very sound investment for their future. Paola McDonald from Olamar Interiors had been working with the clients for the past three years, helping them to renovate their Sterling, VA condominium and their Moorefield, WV weekend home. It seemed fitting that they would also hire her to help them renovate this home as well. For this project we took the home down to the studs and practically rebuilt it. The renovation includes an addition to the basement level and main floor to create a new fitness room, additional guest bedroom and larger kitchen and dining area. It also included a renovation of the facade of the home. The exterior of the home was completely re-sided and painted, and we added the tall windows at the stairs. The lower entry deck was expanded and an upper deck was added just off the kitchen in order for the homeowner to keep his grill away from the strong ocean winds. A new deck was also added off of the master bedroom. New stainless steel railings were added to all the decks. We opened the homes stairwells, adding custom glass railings and new lighting to create a much more open feel and allow for natural light to flood the entire main living area. The original, tiny kitchen was expanded substantially, adding a large custom eat in bar, wine storage area and plenty of storage. We utilized Decora’s Marquis Cabinetry in an espresso finish to give the kitchen a very clean, contemporary feel. Carrara marble countertops paired with a grey quartz, single slap marble backsplash, and stainless appliances create a clean look. In the new dining area, a simple Modloft dining table was paired with a Regina Andrew bubbles chandelier and Jessica Charles dining chairs for a sophisticated feel accentuated perfectly by beachy colors and textures that tie in the beautiful views of the Ocean. A custom chandelier from John Pomp is the highlight of the family room, particularly at night when it is reminiscent to fireflies in the sky. A new custom designed, custom made sectional, cozy newly added Spark Modern Fires gas fireplace, custom rug by Julie Dasher and Lee Industries chairs create a cozy place to lounge and watch television after a long day at the beach. Guests feel like they are in a luxurious boutique hotel complete with spectacular views, comfortable Ann Gish linens and beautiful and unique lighting fixtures. All three full baths and the powder room received complete facelifts with new glass, marble and ceramic tiles, Decora cabinetry, new lighting fixtures, quartz countertops and unique features that make unique statements in each one. Phillip Jeffries mica wallpaper are used in the entryway and family room fireplace walls to add a sandy texture to each space. Phillip Jeffries grasscloth was added to the master bedroom accent wall to create a delicate feature. New flooring throughout includes gorgeous dark stained hardwood floors, ceramic tile and Karastan carpeting in the bedrooms. The crisp white and grey walls are accentuated throughout the home by beach inspired turquoises, navies and lime greens. Many times we are asked, especially by former clients, to create “other” special projects for them. Here is one such project. A former AppWood Door client contacted us 3 years after receiving her custom door asking us to design and build a Dining Table for her that meshed some elements of her sleek and modern Front Entry Door while contrasting others. After considerable thought, sketches and multiple drawings, we developed this “Live Edge” Sycamore and Walnut table with a shop-made metal base. It incorporates the modern elements of her wood and metal door but with a softer, more organic and warm overall feel. The oblong shape of the Sycamore slab required a way to “widen” it on one end so it would be more uniform in size. We created a solid Walnut panel with soft curving lines and piston-fit it in the middle of the table to widen it and make it uniform in size. Metal still meets wood… organically! Needless to say, she loves it

This gorgeous home received a custom kitchen design mixed with a kids bathroom addition and a full interior remodeling. Light hardwood floors were installed throughout the house for a unified look and different color tiles were used in each bathroom for a pop of unique design.

A white perimeter makes the kitchen feel larger and the light blue island grounds the space. Textural jute and ceramic light fixtures give great visual interest in the space. The white oak flooring received a custom stain that brought warmth and continuity. The Super White Quartzite countertops bring pattern and durability to the kitchen. Stainless steel appliances are easy to clean. A mix of brass in light fixtures adds interest, especially over the custom pantry just outside the L-kitchen.

Located in a serene plot in Kittery Point, Maine, this gable-style conservatory was designed, engineered, and installed by Sunspace Design. Extending from the rear of the residence and positioned to capture picturesque views of the surrounding yard and forest, the completed glass space is testament to our commitment to meticulous craftsmanship. Sunspace provided start to finish services for this project, serving as both the glass specialist and the general contractor. We began by providing detailed CAD drawings and manufacturing key components. The mahogany framing was milled and constructed in our wood shop. Meanwhile, we brought our experience in general construction to the fore to prepare the conservatory space to receive the custom glass roof components. The steel structural ridge beam, conventionally framed walls, and raised floor frame were all constructed on site. Insulated Andersen windows invite ample natural light into the space, and the addition of copper cladding ensures a timelessly elegant look. Every aspect of the completed space is informed by our 40+ years of custom glass specialization. Our reach extends beyond New England: in the heart of Sea Island, Georgia, a custom mahogany conservatory roof now stands as another testament to Sunspace Design’s commitment to quality glass construction near and far. This expansive 14′ x 16′ roof was crafted in our New Hampshire workshop before being sent on a journey south by truck. Upon reaching the job site, our team carefully reassembled it piece by piece. The unit was then crane-lifted into its final position atop the conventionally constructed walls provided by the general contractor. The Sunspace team then finished installation. Meticulous logistical planning and careful execution made this possible. The project is a great example of productive collaboration between industry professionals. Working hand-in-hand with Ussery-Rule Architects and Joe Bowles Construction (both local to St. Simons Island), Sunspace’s first contribution was the provision of engineered drawings for the local team’s use. Working in sync from afar, the new construction was perfectly prepared to receive our custom glass roof components well before our arrival. The new space is stunning. Sunlight floods the entertainment area below through high-performance PPG Solarban 70 insulated glass. Glass selection is crucial, and Solarban 70 ensures a comfortable interior environment throughout the year. The exterior is no less beautiful, and is adorned with elegant copper cladding and flashing that creates a striking effect beside the surrounding architecture. No glass space is more elegant than a traditional conservatory, and here we see a gorgeous example which fuses New England ingenuity and Southern charm. We take immense pride in our contribution and hope the clients enjoy their space for years to come, nature and architecture coexisting in perfect harmony on the shores of Sea Island.
