The guest hall access was redirected through the double door opening from this newly re-purposed piano space. With the kitchen now relocated to the larger dining room area, the client was able to finally find a permanent home for the family piano.

The rocks are a mixture of native stones found in the SouthWest. The fence is made from galvanized steel, and the reflective surface redirects natural sunlight from overhead into the space where it was previously in deep shade. A new set of steps were installed at the lower end of the Walkway, built using Wood and filled with SouthWestern Native Rocks.

This is an example of a contemporary landscaping in DC Metro.

This screen room was built with a gable roof extending above the interior kitchen and dining area. (Skylight was added through new roof into kitchen for added sunlight) The framing of the structure was built with pressure treated lumber topped with new trex composite decking. The build continued upwards to a stick built vaulted ceiling gable roof that extended over most of the deck. A small area at the top of the staircase was added for grilling. A simple retaining wall with minor grade work was also done to redirect water around the new footers and into the lower yard. Last but not least white vinyl lattice was added. A cold but fun job with the guys.

During - 2016 - Was all weeds/turf approx 3 years ago. Solarized and smothered entire lawn in stages in 2013. Redirected water by digging a "dry creek" bed 1-2 feet and filling with gravel in 2013. Covered with cobblestone in 2016. Landscaped over past 3 years with azaleas, rhododendron, ferns, lamium, delphinium, carpet roses (drought tolerant), iceberg roses and a 50 year old Chrysler Imperial rose transplanted from the back yard. Also, ground cover herbs such as lemon thyme, creeping thyme, compact oregano and corsican mint (as well as alyssum). Walkway replaced with pavers in 2016. Flagstone walkway to driveway being placed. Will also be re-mulched. Facing North.

Onsite rainwater capture has become an issue of ever-increasing importance in semi-arid California, particularly as we realize the need to conserve water on a ongoing basis. This project employs the use of rainwater infiltration by diverting existing downspouts into a dry creek. Instead of being diverted into the storm drain system and wasted, the water is recharged back into the ground. Soils are able to hold the moisture and plant watering needs decrease. In addition to being functional, rock features such as dry creeks contribute to the aesthetic and create a beautiful contrast to the plant material.
