We gutted the bathroom, Reframed the walls, Rerouted the plumbing to accommodate the new layout, and vaulted the ceilings since this bathroom was under an attic. The sheet rock was hung, the floor and walls were tiled. A new entry door was installed along with the vanity, toilet, tub, shower and doors. In a wonderful Tudor 30’s home there was a tiny kitchen, a tiny laundry and a tiny breakfast nook enclosed by walls. We removed all the walls and reframed the load bearing beams to convert these tiny little spaces into one large kitchen with many windows for a bright feeling, another wall was removed to connect the kitchen space to the dining and living room creating a great semi-open space. Classical shaker cabinets with a pewter accent island combined with the warmth of the bamboo flooring and the wooded floating shelves made this kitchen feel like it was always there. Modern gold pulls, plumbing fixtures and pendant light combined with the Viking range give this kitchen a high end feeling.

This was a project in the High Park area that we were asked to remove all the finishes on the interior and re-design the spaces to accommodate an open concept layout. There was a small back stairway that we converted into an eating area for the kitchen and bedroom in the basement. All the exterior walls were re-framed and spray foam insulated. All-new drywall, hardwood, tiles, kitchen, plumbing fixtures, and the old fireplace were re-done. The existing stairs were resurfaced and we added all-new handrails and guardrails.

We designed several plans for the space before selecting the final layout. The new design required the removal of the soffit over the old sink, as well as a small wall beside the old refrigerator. The wall beside the stairwell had to be shortened 13 inches and a new beam installed to carry the load of the home’s 2nd story to gain enough space for the large central island. The existing closet pantry walls were also reconfigured as per the new plan. This serves as a great reminder that Dimensions In Wood is much more than just custom cabinets. Central to the entire custom kitchen is an 8-foot Walnut island. The huge island, which comfortably seats three, is topped with Essenza Blue quartzite. The stone’s natural striations are beautiful. The island’s custom Walnut cabinetry, built to resemble a piece of custom furniture, was stained Bronzed Walnut by Sherwin Williams. The 4-foot Galley Workstation in the island, handles all the kitchen’s prep, serving, and cleanup needs. The island also houses the Thermador Sapphire 7-Program Dishwasher with a hidden touch control panel and a custom Walnut wood front. The cabinetry under the Galley Workstation features a trash roll out, as well as storage for the culinary tools. Above the panty doors is a remote controlled, electric motor powered, lift up cabinet door which hides a flat screen TV, used while the family is cooking. To establish the breakfast nook, a bench with drawers and an upholstered seat was built into the bay area of the room. Custom bookshelves were built with open shelves, cabinet doors, and drawers on either side of the fireplace. A new stone hearth and fireplace surround were installed. Above the existing mantel we built a recessed space for the flat screen television hiding all wiring inside the walls for a completely clean look. The space that was once a desk was transformed into a bar area. The glass shelves and glass cabinet front liquor cabinet stand out. But this bar area has hidden secrets. Tucked beneath the black granite is a Thermador under-counter double drawer refrigerator with matching wood front panels. They blend in perfectly with the cabinets. A wireless printer is easily accessed on a slide out drawer. Plus, what looks like merely wooden panels on the wall are concealing recessed storage for more bottles and glasses! Overhead recessed lighting and speaker system provide illumination and entertainment through the entire space. This luxury home had original, solid oak flooring through most of the first floor which the homeowner obviously wanted to keep but were in desperate need of repair and refinishing. Our master craftsmen wove in new wood flooring to match the old where needed, particularly where walls had been changed and where the floor was damaged. We sanded the floors, smoothing away years of wear and tear. The entire wood floor was then uniformly stained, making it impossible to differentiate where any repairs were made. We had the pleasure to design and execute this wonderful project for a couple in Sherman Oaks. Client was in need of a 4th bedroom and a brighter bigger living space. We removed and reframed a 30' load bearing wall to unite the living room with the dining room and sitting area into 1 great room, we opened a 17' opening to the back yard to allow natural light to brighten the space and the greatest trick was relocating the kitchen from an enclosed space to the new great room and turning the old kitchen space into the 4th bedroom the client requested. Notice how the warmth of the European oak floors interact with the more modern blue island and the yellow barstools. The large island that can seat 8 people acts as a superb work space and an unofficial dining area. All custom solid wood cabinets and the high end appliance complete the look of this new magnificent and warm space for the family to enjoy.

Remodeling an existing 1940s basement is a challenging! We started off with reframing and rough-in to open up the living space, to create a new wine cellar room, and bump-out for the new gas fireplace. A house with such incredible views as this one should take full advantage of them. We began with the entrance – turning an uninsulated mudroom into a warm and light-filled welcoming area. The kitchen was opened and outfitted with birch cabinetry, light grey countertops, and steel appliances. A large central island makes this a natural gathering place to share food and conversation. The transition between the kitchen and the living room is seamless. A full splash of windows allows for uninterrupted views of the ocean from a comfortable seat on the couch. The interior stair connecting floors is suspended by stainless steel rods so as to appear to “float.” This gravity-defying link both sets the tone for this relaxed and refreshing home and allows light to spread through the space. Cohesive design throughout the living area gives this house personality without the puzzle. With the constraint of not being able to move the structure any closer to the ocean, we reframed the front half of the house to build out the master bedroom. Now this room has spectacular water views, and the addition of a new roof deck provides an elevated vantage point with an invitation to sit back and relax. To limit any future tangles in this house for our clients, we paid special attention to making the renovated elements as high quality as possible. The windows were replaced with triple-glazed units and new insulation was installed to increase efficiency. Frequent communication and great teamwork between owner, builder, and architect made this an easy and light-filled renovation, to be enjoyed for many years to come.

On this Marietta, GA home, we completed a full siding replacement using James Hardie HZ10 lap siding in the Woodgrain texture. We also replaced the soffit, fascia, and the gutters. For the windows, we cut in and framed 4 taller double hung windows with 4 transoms above them in place of the circle top and picture window on the front of the home. In the laundry room, we framed and added a new window as well. Along with this, we replaced 32 windows with Master 2800 Series Vinyl DH Replacement Windows and 4 windows with Master 2800 Series Vinyl Transom windows. On the back of the home, we converted the screened-in porch into a sunroom, which included reframing the knee wall, installing new vinyl picture windows, and installing a Therma-Tru door. Lastly, we painted two new coats of paint to the exterior.

From Attic to Awesome Many of the classic Tudor homes in Minneapolis are defined as 1 ½ stories. The ½ story is actually an attic; a space just below the roof and with a rough floor often used for storage and little more. The owners were looking to turn their attic into about 900 sq. ft. of functional living/bedroom space with a big bath, perfect for hosting overnight guests. This was a challenging project, considering the plan called for raising the roof and adding two large shed dormers. A structural engineer was consulted, and the appropriate construction measures were taken to address the support necessary from below, passing the required stringent building codes. The remodeling project took about four months and began with reframing many of the roof support elements and adding closed cell spray foam insulation throughout to make the space warm and watertight during cold Minnesota winters, as well as cool in the summer. You enter the room using a stairway enclosed with a white railing that offers a feeling of openness while providing a high degree of safety. A short hallway leading to the living area features white cabinets with shaker style flat panel doors – a design element repeated in the bath. Four pairs of South facing windows above the cabinets let in lots of South sunlight all year long. The 130 sq. ft. bath features soaking tub and open shower room with floor-to-ceiling 2-inch porcelain tiling. The custom heated floor and one wall is constructed using beautiful natural stone. The shower room floor is also the shower’s drain, giving this room an open feeling while providing the ultimate functionality. The other half of the bath consists of a toilet and pedestal sink flanked by two white shaker style cabinets with Granite countertops. A big skylight over the tub and another north facing window brightens this room and highlights the tiling with a shade of green that’s pleasing to the eye. The rest of the remodeling project is simply a large open living/bedroom space. Perhaps the most interesting feature of the room is the way the roof ties into the ceiling at many angles – a necessity because of the way the home was originally constructed. The before and after photos show how the construction method included the maximum amount of interior space, leaving the room without the “cramped” feeling too often associated with this kind of remodeling project. Another big feature of this space can be found in the use of skylights. A total of six skylights – in addition to eight South-facing windows – make this area warm and bright during the many months of winter when sunlight in Minnesota comes at a premium. The main living area offers several flexible design options, with space that can be used with bedroom and/or living room furniture with cozy areas for reading and entertainment. Recessed lighting on dimmers throughout the space balances daylight with room light for just the right atmosphere. The space is now ready for decorating with original artwork and furnishings. This 1890 rowhouse had been renovated over time, most recently in the 70s. Our clients wanted to renovate every floor. The floors and walls were out of level, and most of the systems were old. We gutted the structure to the studs, leveled and reframed the walls and floors, added insulation and updated the plumbing, electrical and HVAC. Once the structural and systems work was complete, our crew installed a new expanded kitchen, updated all the bathrooms, and updated the basement. Reconfiguring the first floor plan involved taking down the wall between the kitchen and dining room to create one large entertaining space. To bring more natural light and provide sight lines from the front to the back of the rowhouse, we added new windows to the back wall and moved the opening to the other side as a full-light door.
