Every now and again, I get a call from a client located on the small peninsula of Sandbanks, Poole. Sandbanks, sometimes referred to as ‘Britain’s Palm Beach’, is known for its fantastic beach and high value property. My client asked me to take a look at a Travertine floor in his kitchen which was, in fact, more highly polished than he had wanted. The polished finish had worn off the travertine tiles where they had been walked on, leaving a dull trackway running down the centre of the kitchen. With its distinct characteristics, travertine is a popular choice for kitchen flooring, although it is also quite often used in bathrooms. In any case Travertine tiles will need regular maintenance to keep them looking their best. Unfortunately, the kitchen floor must have experienced some sort of settlement or shrinkage as a long crack has appeared, which ran along the same line as the dull trackway. It is not uncommon for Travertine tiles to crack due to wear over time, or even bad fitting in some cases. While the exact cause of the crack was unclear, the homeowner concluded that the floor was certainly in need of restoration. Repairing a crack in a Travertine tiled floor Replacing the Travertine tiles was not an option due to a lack of spare tiles, so I opted instead to fill the crack in the floor using Harbro Stone Filler, an epoxy stone filler, matching the colour of the tile as closely as possible. I left this to set, before sanding down the excess filler. My next action was to use a set of Tile Doctor Diamond burnishing pads to sand out any scratches and restore a more even shine to the floor, as per the client’s request. For polished stone, I recommend using a set of four burnishing pads applied in order: Coarse, Medium, Fine, and Very Fine. I used these one after the other with a little water to lubricate and restore the surface polish to the desired level. Sealing a Travertine tiled floor The next day, I returned to seal the floor with a couple of coats of Tile Doctor Colour Grow sealer. Colour Grow is a colour enhancing, impregnating sealer which penetrates deeply into the pores of the stone, thereby preventing dirt from becoming ingrained within. This particular sealer also enhances the natural colours within the Travertine tile, whilst also providing long term durable protection. Although the crack could not be made to disappear completely, its appearance was much improved. The customer was also very pleased with the long-lasting lower sheen provided, describing it as “the finish I had wanted in the first place when the tiles were fitted”.

As you may know, Superior Chimney writes a lot of articles to educate the Chicagoland area on chimneys and how to identify problems. Every once in a while, it is good to go back and review the basics. That’s what we’re going to do. We’re going to discuss what are the components of a chimney. Let’s get started. What are the Components of a Fireplace? We’re going to get started on the actual chimney itself. Most chimneys are built of brick and some are constructed of a wood framed chase with siding on it to match the rest of the home. The traditional masonry fireplace chimneys include (from the inside out) a firebox, where the firewood burns and gas starter are located. Going up is the throat, smoke chamber and then chimney flue. These are the components of a masonry chimney where the exhaust/air travels through - From the firebox and out through the top of the chimney. You can most often ‘see’ your chimney from the ground, you will notice the bricks and on top of that will be the chimney crown (cement slab) which keeps the elements away from the brick chimney. On top of the chimney crown is the chimney cap. This is what keeps animals & debris from entering the chimney flue… raccoons, squirrels, birds, bats, etc… down the flue, and into the firebox. Now that we know what components that a chimney has, let’s focus on a couple of key areas. Fireplace Dampers All chimneys are fitted with a fireplace damper. A fireplace damper is a metal plate that opens and closes, allowing smoke from the fireplace to move up and out of the home. If you have a fire and the fireplace damper is closed, or restrictive, the smoke will back up into your home. The smoke needs a place to go. When the fireplace is not in use, the damper should remain closed in order to keep the cold air out of your home and warm air from escaping your home. Just because you have a fireplace does not mean that you have to deal with cold drafts in the room the fireplace is in. Chimney Flues As we all know, heat rises. The heat from the fireplace is going to rise taking with it the smoke, and other gases. This process is known as drafting. It is important to have good drafting as it prevents the smoke or gases from staying in your home and harming your family. Chimney Flue Liners Flue liners are important to the chimney; they are your firewall. It works to prevent overheating of any combustibles next to the chimney. And, it helps so the chimney construction doesn’t corrode from the byproducts of burning wood, or creosote. There are a few types of flue liners, such as fire clay tiles, heat resistant concrete, and stainless steel. We had a blast helping Alex & Bailey with their kitchen remodeling project. They were looking to update their dated kitchen into a modern and sleek one, and adding features to increase functionality. Here are some of the items they had us complete for the kitchen remodel: - Installed new Sollid white shaker cabinets to provide more storage and give a clean & elegant look. - Built a long rectangle shaped island with a single-level countertop. - Installed 3 pendant lights above the island and 2 new faux wood beams to tie in with the new tile flooring. - Removed the old appliances and installed 4 regular appliances. - Installed new flooring called Lucia Miele 6x36" Glazed Porcelain. They picked Monte Cristo Satin countertops from Arizona Tile, which ties in great with the rest of the space. They chose Paloma Cotton Bevel Gloss 3X6" ceramic tile to add a beautiful backsplash in the herringbone pattern.

Matt black wall-mounted taps suit the dark colour scheme and give the bathroom its polished look. The black wall hung toilet is both practical and aesthetically pleasing, and it’s a sophisticated choice for a contemporary concealed toilet solution. The built-in shower bench enhances the look and functionality of the walk-in shower and provides its user with many practical solutions - from storing the toiletries to creating a perch to sit on.

A single-family home built on a lake in Columbia County, NY. Hugging the perimeter of an old-growth forest, this family home is situated so as to take full advantage of long valley views, passive heating and cooling, and the natural windbreak provided by the treeline. The house demonstrates the sustainable design dictum, "Don't build more house than you need," and the design incorporates many energy-saving features and materials. The project was featured in the New York Times as a model of sustainable design and is regularly included on the Columbia County sustainable home tour. The main house, guest house, pool and pool house were designed to be an unobtrusive living environment on the 100-acre site. Landscape Architect Jon Piasecki designed paths, plant arrangements and follies around the grounds.

BK's primary bathroom remodel began with a vision for a more functional and stylish space. The goal was to create a serene and practical environment, retaining some elements while adding modern upgrades. Demolition began with removing the bathtub and surrounding structures. The bathtub was removed completely to make way for their new large walk in shower. BK's custom shower was installed with his selections of the Ivory Matte 2x2" square tiles on the shower floor, and the Lagos Ivory Matte 12x24" rectangle on the shower walls, set in a horizontal straight stack pattern for a more modern approach. A new shower bench wrapped in the same over-sized wall tile was added in the dry-off area to provide extra functionality and comfort. BK selected new plumbing fixtures from the Delta Galeon series which included a regular shower head, hand shower, valve, and trim kit in Lumicoat Stainless Steel.
