The mammoth phalanxes of white-brick apartment houses that proliferated in the 1960s occupy an architectural purgatory; generic, with boxy interiors devoid of detail, many aren’t even interesting enough to excite a raised eyebrow. Our solution for this exemplar near Astor Place, which fortunately was blessed with premium skyline views, was to relieve the interior ordinariness by stimulating the senses with tactile variety. Axis Mundi created a complexly layered textural palette that injects visual adrenaline into the architectural envelope: a television set into a waxed steel panel topped by clerestory windows with a built-in planter for grasses; wenge wood walls rising from richly figured walnut floors; white subway tile surrounding a subtly colored penny-tile mosaic tub and wall; in the kitchen, Venetian plaster, steel, stone and wood mix harmoniously as a surprisingly spiced exotic concoction. The interiors exude a confident masculinity that challenges the complacency of bland, white-box living.

Adding eucalyptus to the bathroom automatically creates an aromatherapy experience. The steam from the shower activates the stress relieving agents in the plant which is great for your skin and reduces migraines.

My concept for this kitchen was to collaborate with my client for this complete home renovation and ensure that the kitchen was the focal point of the open concept home. We strategically worked together to ensure proper wall dimensions, island placement and function, and symmetry to meet the wants and needs of my clients. White perimeter cabinetry helped to achieve a traditional feel for the space, while the gray stained island cabinetry allowed for a lovely transition to make the cozy kitchen work seamlessly with the distressed wide plank farmhouse style floating floor. In order to relieve the stark whiteness of the perimeter, I had suggested using contrast grout for the subway tile and the ultimate choice of cement tiles for the accent backsplash behind the range created a cathartic scene in this modestly stated design. Throw in some owls, books, and some fun pendant lighting and we were smiling through the finish line, together!!! My goal is to ensure that my client's needs are met and that their lives are improved through my designs. I hope you like the images of the new space!

Do you ever think about DIYing your closet renovation, but you’re just not sure it’ll turn out the way you want?
This is where we found our recent client, Amanda, and her husband, Terry.
DIY Dreamers
The couple was in the middle of renovating their master bath when Amanda went down a Pinterest ‘rabbit hole.’
There in her endless scrolling, she was mesmerized by photos of beautiful master closets…efficient master closets…organized master closets…inspired master closets.
Amanda began thinking…If she and Terry were already redoing their master bath, it only made sense to renovate their ensuite closet at the same time.
They could even DIY it and save a little bit of money, too. Right?
Amanda took measurements, researched closet organization systems online, and prepared to become a closet DIY warrior.
But a little thought was holding her back.
It wasn’t that she didn’t think they could do it themselves.
Could they survive the stress of the renovation process?
What if they ended up hating the result?
What if they ended up hating each other in the process?
That’s when Amanda found us and decided to explore a different option.
A Professional Job – At the Same Price
Our Designer Felicity arrived for a consultation, worked up a complete closet renovation plan, explained our signature stress-free installation process, and gave the couple a price.
The number ended up rivaling the final DIY cost.
Amanda and Terry were sold (and relieved).
The couple’s professional closet renovation & end-to-end installation took place over just 2 days last summer.
They now have custom floor-to-ceiling closet organization – and new weight off of their shoulders that only comes with a clean, organized space.
We later returned to revamp their daughter Savannah’s closet a few weeks later.
Before you DIY your closet revamp, give us a quick call. We’d love to show you what we can do.

Constructed in two phases, this renovation, with a few small additions, touched nearly every room in this late ‘50’s ranch house. The owners raised their family within the original walls and love the house’s location, which is not far from town and also borders conservation land. But they didn’t love how chopped up the house was and the lack of exposure to natural daylight and views of the lush rear woods. Plus, they were ready to de-clutter for a more stream-lined look. As a result, KHS collaborated with them to create a quiet, clean design to support the lifestyle they aspire to in retirement.
To transform the original ranch house, KHS proposed several significant changes that would make way for a number of related improvements. Proposed changes included the removal of the attached enclosed breezeway (which had included a stair to the basement living space) and the two-car garage it partially wrapped, which had blocked vital eastern daylight from accessing the interior. Together the breezeway and garage had also contributed to a long, flush front façade. In its stead, KHS proposed a new two-car carport, attached storage shed, and exterior basement stair in a new location. The carport is bumped closer to the street to relieve the flush front facade and to allow access behind it to eastern daylight in a relocated rear kitchen. KHS also proposed a new, single, more prominent front entry, closer to the driveway to replace the former secondary entrance into the dark breezeway and a more formal main entrance that had been located much farther down the facade and curiously bordered the bedroom wing.
Inside, low ceilings and soffits in the primary family common areas were removed to create a cathedral ceiling (with rod ties) over a reconfigured semi-open living, dining, and kitchen space. A new gas fireplace serving the relocated dining area -- defined by a new built-in banquette in a new bay window -- was designed to back up on the existing wood-burning fireplace that continues to serve the living area. A shared full bath, serving two guest bedrooms on the main level, was reconfigured, and additional square footage was captured for a reconfigured master bathroom off the existing master bedroom. A new whole-house color palette, including new finishes and new cabinetry, complete the transformation. Today, the owners enjoy a fresh and airy re-imagining of their familiar ranch house.

The master bath design created for this Yardley, PA home is a dream come true. Every detail of this design combines to create a space that is highly function and stylish, while also feeling like a relaxing retreat from daily life. The combination of a Victoria + Albert freestanding tub with the Isenberg waterfall tub filler faucet is sure to be a favorite spot for a soothing stress reliever. If you prefer to relax in the shower, the large, walk-in shower has everything you need. The frameless glass door leads into a large, corner shower complete with MSI hexagonal mosaic shower floor, recessed storage niche, and corner shelf. The highlight of this shower is the Toto Connelly shower plumbing including body sprays, rainfall and handheld showerheads, and a thermostatic shower. The Toto Drake II toilet sits in a separate toilet compartment with a frosted glass pocket door. The DuraSupreme vanity with Avery panel door in caraway on cherry with a charcoal glaze has ample storage. It is complemented by Top Knobs hardware, a Silestone Ocean Jasper eased edge countertop, and two sinks with two-handled faucets. Above the vanity are Dainolite pendant lights, plus a Robern lift-up medicine cabinet with lights, a defogger, and a magnifying mirror. This amazing bath design is sure to be the highlight of this Yardley, PA home.

We worked with them to provide decluttering, organizing, design support, and maintenance of the space as their needs change over time. Working with a professional organizer for your home organization projects allows you to focus on what you do best, while knowing your projects will be taken care of and your stress relieved!

Room Redefined supported the organization of a closet designed and installed by The Container Store in a new-build in the Observatory Park neighborhood. Decluttering, sorting, purging, selling of unwanted items, organizing and assigning homes of all items were key parts of our process to producing this easily accessible and maintainable master closet space. Working with a professional organizer for your home organization projects allows you to focus on what you do best, while knowing your projects will be taken care of and your stress relieved! While we worked with Elfa Decor for this project, we can work with any closet design products to help you meet your goals.

Fantastic enough, Jaime Lannister returns to King's Landing with Myrcella Baratheon's corpse. Tensions escalate between Tommen Baratheon, Cersei Lannister, and the Faith Militant and the High Sparrow, as the latter refuses to let Tommen visit Margaery in prison or Cersei attend Myrcella's funeral. Jaime and the Tyrell army attempt to liberate Margaery and Loras, only to find Margaery has become a follower of the High Sparrow and Tommen has forged an alliance with the Faith Militant.
Tommen relieves Jaime from the Kingsguard, sending him to Riverrun to assist House Frey in reclaiming it from the "Blackfish" Brynden Tully. Cersei is unconcerned about their separation, as she has named the reanimated Gregor Clegane to defend her in her trial by combat; however, Tommen decrees that trial by combat is to be abolished and replaced by trial by the Faith.
At Riverrun, Jaime finds that the Blackfish is determined to not surrender the castle and is willing to wait out a siege. Brienne is allowed to enter Riverrun in order to persuade the Blackfish to surrender, but he refuses to abandon his ancestral home. Jaime forces Edmure Tully, held captive by the Freys, to order the Tully forces to surrender. Brienne and Podrick flee, while the Blackfish dies fighting the Lannisters.
In the Riverlands, Sandor "The Hound" Clegane is revealed to have survived his wounds and assists a peaceful community in building a sept. After the villagers are slaughtered by outlaws affiliated with the Brotherhood Without Banners, the Hound pursues the Brotherhood. He kills some of the outlaws and encounters Ser Beric Dondarrion and Thoros of Myr executing the others.

In order to help the homeowners achieve their vision Heather, our designer, knew that some walls needed to be removed. We removed one L-shaped wall to open up the kitchen area to the rest of the home, this relieved high traffic areas in the home and improved the flow of the main level tremendously. We also removed a closet to help maximize their space. We added a mudroom off of the kitchen with lockers for easy organization of the kid’s backpacks, coats, and shoes.
The homeowners had some specific ideas in mind for the style of the kitchen. They wanted two-toned shaker cabinets, white backsplash with a unique design, and they requested large floor tiles. Heather helped them through the selection process and they happily landed on:
- Light Maple Upper Cabinets
- Dark Maple Lower Cabinets
- White Subway Tile Backsplash in a Herringbone
Pattern
- Large 17x35 porcelain tile flooring
- Light Granite Counter Tops

Rob and Danielle have three children and wanted a kitchen redesign that would function better for their active household. Their kitchen contained tight spaces with a narrow island that blocked flow through the room. Two cooks in the kitchen were one too many as the space wasn’t conducive for it. For entertaining, the island proved to be too small to set out all their food and have room around it for guests to congregate. The only way to walk to the great room, which was where the family hung out most often, was to go through the kitchen and dining area, proving to again congest the area. They are avid sailors, and wanted to bring in the color of the sea into their contemporary design.
I added a separate entry point directly from the kitchen to the great room, and created a work triangle in a separate area to relieve the congestion from people passing through the room. The island shape and size were uniquely designed to allow the person at the sink to be able to look directly into the great room, and provide ample space to spread out food for entertaining. A bookcase was integrated into the island to display cookbooks, and the paneled refrigerator made for a seamless wall of beautiful cabinetry. The entry into the formal dining was relocated to remove the necessity of having corner cabinetry. A separate bar area allows family and guests to make their drinks without needing to go into the chef’s space. The glass backsplash tile was selected to reflect the sea colors they love, with crystal pendants to add bling similar to the light that reflects off the water.
